I just got one of Razor's high-priced funky green mousy things off of GoGamer's current 48 hour madness dirt-cheap to replace my also high-priced G9 that just conked the bucket because I'm not terribly in the mood to spend insane dollars on a mouse this particular month. Any advice from you Razor vets for a total n00b who's never owned one before?

I'd say it depends on how much you use Garrus, Jack and Thane. The alt-looks are nice, but if you don't have them on-screen a lot, pretty pointless.

I would say the number one bonehead reason for why someone's computer doesn't power on is that they're in the middle of a power outtage. "Wait, why do you need a flashlight to check the cabling?"

I can't help but feel skeptcism whenever a developer says they're actually putting effort into animation. The biggest hurdle for immersion in games these days is a near complete lack of decent choreography; state-of-the-art facial animation is nice, but meaningless when movement and body language is as stiff as it was three generations ago and motion capture is often used for short, stock animations that don't make for a completely fluid look. I can't think of much off the top of my head besides Uncharted, MGS and Legacy of Kain that put real effort into this area.

Seems like gamers as a crowd haven't done much more than repurpose reviews from information sources to validation tools; most of us who whine when a game we like gets a 5/10 are doing so because we can't use the review to rub in how awesome it is to other people who like competing games or other consoles the game in question isn't on. Chalk it up to how willing gamers are to take abuse from the industry, because the driving forces behind gaming journalism have certainly long since realized that their demographic gives them better responses to BS reviews that have high numbers. Numbers being part of the problem, here; one of the reasons I actually take Yahtzee more seriously than many reviews despite his weaponization of pessimism coloring everything he says is that the lack of numbers makes him more trustworthy. Seeing a number attached to any review is like a giant red flag waving around as though suffering gale force winds, while on fire.

Interesting that article throws up a picture of MGS4 as one of the games where this problem manifests itself, since it's one of the few times there's a variable in place that makes it interesting to examine. Wasted opportunity not actually doing so.

Why Modern Video Game Armies Lack Female Troops

Kotaku probably should've read the article about women in the military they linked to near the end of theirs, they'd have come up with an actual hypothesis instead of just blathering and quoting developers on technical reasons. It's not hard to figure out, we don't see women in modern military games because most of those games are made in America, where the military officially doesn't allow women onto the front lines and, thus, the fact that they're 'unofficially' doing a pretty good job when they end up there for whatever reason hasn't turned into a part of our media culture.

Well, my personal issue with these are the lost/wasted time spent developing these whereas the core game had some significant shortcomings.

Considering that the vast majority of players are happy with the core game and a skin pack probably has more to do with the artists rather than programmers and level designers, this statement is saying that the part of the dev team who can't change what most of the player-base doesn't want changed isn't going to change it.

Ultimately, though, the rental industry does cut into short-term profits. When I send something back to Gamefly instead of paying them (ten bucks less than Failstop's used price) to keep it, they don't need to buy a new one to send to the next renter.

So are you trying to tell us PC games are inferior pieces of buggy trash that have no entertainment value, poor production values, and shitty controls and are only enjoyed by brain dead pieces of living shit? Because I'm pretty sure what that's what you just said, Mr. Shit.

Forgot "Voice acting that makes Zelda on the CDi look like Oscar-material."

or maybe theyre finally going to admit a connection between marathon and halo.

About as likely as the fandom finally admitting that Halo's "connection" to marathon is just Bungie being addicted to homages.

I lost all pity for Fallout fanboys who couldn't stand the genre change when NMA posted an editorial that spent at least three paragraphs complaining about the architectural style of the corners and windows of buildings in Fallout 3's concept art.

I'm honestly more excited about Crash and Overgrown than the new maps. I don't particularly dislike MW2's maps, but, possibly just because of the nostalgia filter, the originals always seem a bit better. I hope they keep adding them back in.

The AUG is actually unlocked through getting points as Assault, not strict rank-ups. Dunno about "best gun in BC2" though, I can't kill shit with it.

Maybe my game is bugged.

Even with the above, I am fine with The Hurt Locker winning, but I think it really speaks to what somebody is looking for.

While I obviously favor Hurt Locker myself, my comment wasn't so much about comparing the films as de-bullshittifying the Academy Awards, where obvious bias to cookie-cutter, unintelligent films has reigned supreme for years; Avatar simply fits the bill of a shoe-in for best picture, it just so happens that, for some reason, perhaps an act of divine intervention, there was apparently behind-the-scenes brouhaha/drama over which of these two films should get it when anyone that follows the nonsense with objectivity over the years would say you could make easy money betting on Avatar. The idea that something unexpected might actually take the little statue is near earth-shattering.

It's still a damn good movie, but it didn't strike me with any type of profound message as it was a combination of various other films I've seen, even if just bits and pieces from various other films. War is bad? War is cruel? War changes people? Innocent people get hurt? It takes a certain type? America has a fascination with war? The current Iraq/Afghanistan wars are convoluted in many ways? I've been there and done that.

I would argue that Hurt Locker isn't a re-tread simply because it's the first movie to do all of these things set in the modern day, like Generation Kill (also a well-made success) did for TV. "War on terror" as a genre has mostly been a flop, largely because the usual conventions of modern-day film and TV simply don't mesh well with it. "In the Valley of Elah" bombed because Clint Eastwood's usually enjoyable presence on-screen was bizarre and out of place. "Stop Loss" had all the trademarks of the simple-minded movie (not necessarily the stupid kind like I railed about above, just not particularly layered) that usually does well: clearly sympathetic protagonist, being frank about moral grey areas in the issues at hand, etc, and it bombed.

Hurt Locker is the Saving Private Ryan of its setting, perhaps even better because SPR, though a far cry from the John Wayne era of glamorizing war, still hammed it up more than Hurt Locker does.

War stories are always an endless repeat of cliches, the good ones just use them better.

Advertising as an industry has existed for so long at this point that over-saturation has caused a shift in business practice from "inform consumers so they buy our stuff" to "we grew brains and realized that advertising is so purvasive consumers are doing everything they can to avoid it, so the more ridiculous and thus attention-grabbing we can be, the better."

If anyone thinks internet-goers would rather tolerate advertising as it exists today instead of watching their favorite websites go down and switching to a new news source, either a smaller website (we're not even close to the point where it's hard to find someone throwing the information we want onto the web somewhere,) or another medium entirely, they're kidding themselves.

If Hurt Locker actually wins out over Avatar for Best Picture by some random act of chaos turning the most biased, unfair panel of judges in anything ever to somehow vote for quality instead of the obvious inane Oscar-bait, I might just think the Academy Awards has a purpose other than rewarding derivative crap.

At one point, I had swiped a transport helicopter just because it was there after shooting an enemy officer in the head, realized I was being followed by gunships, and instead of bailing out, hung from the belly of my stolen helo and shot at them while it listed about.

Sold.
