There's always Crimson Echoes, the fan-made interquel between Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross that takes everything good about the first game and turns it Darker and Edgier more effectively and believably than Mass Effect 2 did. Not that it matters, since Square Cease and Desisted them a couple weeks before release.
Dunno why there's so much hate for Chrono Cross. It wasn't even a sequel, it just tied up the last loose end from Chrono Trigger. |

Wouldn't that mean they're not wrong?
I actually read (not sure how true this is, but it sounds right) that if you buy any of the DLC, you can't play with anyone who doesn't have the DLC (regardless of playlist). Similarly, I have no DLC and I didn't see too many people playing anymore. Or many cheaters, atleast. That sounds right; eventually the Stimulus maps suddenly rolled into the normal playlists, and with Resurgence out, there's not even a Stimulus-only playlist. I doubt they suddenly just gave it away. |

You can get fifty hours out of the game with multiple playthroughs having few similarities to each other. Tacked-on multiplayer didn't help Singularity at all, nor should it be attempted just for the sake of it.

We can debate the meaning of art all we want to, but it's pointless. The man is a troll; if you actually read the article, the entire thing basically says "I shouldn't have said what I said because it was stupid not to expect I'd be called to task for talking about something I have no experience with, but since I don't like it and want nothing to do with it, it's okay if I stick to my argument."
His condescending attitude towards how much time gamers put into playing games grates on me, too. I'm sorry, is my hobby somehow worse than yours because one sitting doesn't fit a neat 1.5 hour schedule?
This is why professional critics are complete bullshit and no one should ever listen to them; objectivity is non-existent. Research for media is stupidly easy these days; you can Youtube trailers or gameplay footage, google for plot summaries or screencaps or general information to see if something suits your tastes. If more people actually took the time to be informed consumers instead of relying on the (sometimes extremely narrow-minded) opinions of others, luddites like Ebert and, god willing, casual forum-goers who bitch about everything would all be out of a job. |

| SF4 online is just as imperfect as other fighters, but no worse, so you'll get noticeable lag sometimes, controller-throwing frustration sometimes, but overall its nicely playable and the skill-matching system works well. (Once you've played five or six games and gotten raped by better players, that is.) |

I remember when Unreal Engine 3 was just starting to be shown, thinking "Wow, that tech demo was out of this world. I hope those crazy-looking creatures will actually go into a game, they look awesome with all those lighting effects and other stuff. The first two Unreal engines were incredible, surely this will follow in their footsteps."

How is that? This is the second time I have been called an elitist today on the internet and both times it was for simply preferring PC games and wishing they were made to the PC's strengths more often. How is that elitist? If I was a Playstation gamer I would likely say the same thing about quick ports from the Xbox or PC that look and run less well than they should on my platform.
It's not elitist to prefer PC games over console games, nor is it elitist to enjoy the strengths of PC gaming, nor did I say it was. It is elitist to say a for-profit business has or should feel like they have an obligation to continue business practices they no longer see as good business because their original demographic deserves despite not making as much of a profit. Or, to put it another way, that they're terrible for not remembering where they come from.
Businesses to not have obligations in that sense. |

A FAQ on basic capitalism should be required reading before joining PC game forums, I swear... If you're referring to my comment I never said I didn't understand it, I actually said right in my post that I know why they do it. That doesn't make it magically less unfortunate for me as a PC gamer.
Understanding why something that annoys you occurs does not make it instantly not annoying.
More like the general attitude, since it pops up with little reason in many threads.
Yes, it's unfortunate, but faulting a for-profit business for good business practices is little more than annoying armchair moral indignation. It doesn't change anything, it's just bitching. And in this case, it's holier than thou bitching of the "PC gamers are way too elite" kind, which anyone on the outside will quickly add "and they don't even matter, lol" too.
As it stands, temperamental forum-goers hammering out "how dare they's" while making an angry face just encourages a businessman to sit back and relax while the other thousands of customers who don't know any better give them cash. Infinity Ward gave us a great example; their forum crashed on account of how many "GIVE US DEDICATED SERVERS" posts they got. They summarily ignored it, even said they were deliberately ignoring it, and the result was a massively successful sale. |

You know, I look at this and I don't think it's actually the result of stupid businessmen, I think it's the result of businessmen who think the time is right for pushing a "games as a service" model.
And it'll probably achieve some success, because consumers exist in a bubble of blissful ignorance where there's no reason to actually look at the numbers when they can just think, "They say it's a good deal, so it must be." |

I would look up the extra items it gives you (just google for them with "mass effect wiki" in quotes as part of the search) and look at the stats for each. Unlike most cases, the extra armor and weapons don't become obsolete compared to normally available early and mid-game equipment, and the armors will remain effective through the entire game, provided you don't get sick of looking at it. On a side-note, there's also a lot of free DLC, so make sure you snag it all (Kasumi's paid DLC is also very much worth it for starting a new game compared to getting it after already being done. The Overlord DLC is, I think, better for saving until you've beaten the game.)
The Collector armor and Blood Dragon armor (though the latter doesn't come with the DD edition) are particularly nice for making a run on Insanity. |

Kasumi is great if you don't tack her on to an already-completed game. She has more clickable lines then Zaeed, and it seemed like more of them were context-sensitive to goings-on at various points in the plot, and she's entertaining to have for her in-mission dialog most of the time. I found her interesting because she's very different from the entire rest of the cast, and her dialog is believable in this respect; she's like a slice of what non-crazy people and non-soldiers in the setting could be like, which there isn't much of among the rest. She's also a viable tech specialist for the vent during the suicide mission.
Her mission is short, but it's well made and the only problem with its presentation is a particularly egregious use of another object (the krogan liquer bottle magically turns into a giant priceless vase.) I thought there was a certain value in the style of her mission that made up for the length, but I think I'm in the minority there.
The only problem with Overlord is that your squaddies never have any dialog (I'm guessing they didn't have the time and money to get all the voice actors back for a recording session at once) and it's conspicuous in a few places, particularly one bit near the end. Other then that, it's pretty damn epic and StingingVelvet is right on the money about the emotional payoff at the end. |

What's killing gaming is the risk-aversion attitude of the industry. The only way to solve the attention span problem is to stop being cookie cutter, and not just about copying Nintendo's motion control sillyness. Development costs ballooning exponentially have driven everyone to formulas, but formulas get old fast in gaming. Unfortunately, this is counter-intuitive in the business world, especially because it works so well for a little while. When franchises like Call of Duty and Halo eventually start tapering off, it's long before anyone industry-side ever expects it to happen, because, hey, aren't we just giving them more of what they want?
It is, unfortunately, an expensive gamble to actually be innovative. If there's one real argument for videogames being real art, it's that the best games transcend the sum of their technical parts (quality of graphics, camera perspective, etc) and do very little to add on new features and gimmicks, but nevertheless hit home with their presentation and emotional value. This is why we see "Was FF7 really that great?" articles every time it's a slow news month; the game really wasn't a transcendent gameplay experience, but the presentation and the characters were more then enough to hook many of us, so we didn't care.
Unfortunately, since so much of the gaming demographic is raised to de-value art, it's more profitable to churn out valueless slop masquerading as art to simple-minded philistines who have no concept of innovation or emotional investment. Is Halo popular because it's an innovative series, or is it because it just happened to strike the "Oooo, shiny!" chord with a whole lot of people at once? |

The first Dead Space wasn't all that graphically advanced compared to other titles it came out around either...it seemed like they sacrificed straight-up graphical fidelty for a stronger lighting engine, and both the art style and level design did quite a lot with the level of detail it had to work with. Definitely a good "less is more" execution, and proof that you don't need CryEngine 3 to make a game look good.
I'm more concerned with the way they're changing the pacing for Dead Space 2. On the one hand, I like the idea of having more leeway in being able to shoot stuff. On the other hand, it's entirely possible they'll fail at maintaining the atmosphere and creepyness to go along with the shift.
Ah well, since I'm a total bitch when it comes to games that are at least supposed to be scary, even when most people don't find them as such, I guess I wouldn't complain. Now, if I can just stop having nightmares from seeing Eversion on Steam... |

I used D3D overrider to fix the V-Sync problem and it seemed to fix the mouse issue as well, but I ended up using my 360 pad anyway; something about third-person shooters just makes me feel more comfortable with it then a mouse and keyboard.
You certainly can't get through the game with unwieldy controls; dismembering the necromorphs isn't taxing, but it does take precision. I wouldn't have wanted to be running from the Hunter with mouselook behaving all loopy. |

Of course they are, that's why the characters can be broken down into tiers like any other fighting game. Unlike many others, a good player with a low-tier character could beat a mediocre player with a high-tier character.
Scorpion and Sub-Zero were on the low-end of the mid-tier in MK2, in particular, less so in UMK3, but even when they weren't as good on paper as the likes of Kitana and Mileena, they were extremely good at taking advantage of the other player's position, if not their outright mistakes. You needed to fight smarter, but you were rewarded for doing so.
Although, Sub-Zero did have a hilarious straightforward advantage over Baraka, where his freeze move put him low enough for Baraka's projectile to pass over him. |
