Not that Starlancer or any of the hardcore simulation games had jaw-dropping sales. Gears of War PC probably sold better.
The sad thing about Halo 2 was that it was actually a good port. The graphics were better (all details at minimum and 640x480 equaled the Xbox version) and the mouse control felt like real mouse control instead of the handicapped "your face is stuck in the mud" input from Halo 1 and Shadowrun. If they hadn't ruined the entire thing with BS unneeded Vista exclusivity, it probably would've been better-received. |

Because someone who's clearly not as good at making money and a bunch of angry forum-goers say he's wrong? sorry, my bad. i meant to say tamte. who was the other guy who criticized kotick then later retracted everything he said? activision is too big to ignore especially with tamte's comments. it will burn bridges and bite him in the ass one day. Yeah..so lets kiss the giant evil corporations ass so they don't bring the wrath down upon our heads or we will never make it in the video game industry!
You sir have obviously bought into fear and not upsetting the apple cart.
Fuck Kotick and his company. Trust me, what comes around goes around, his day will come.
..And im pretty sure Tamte is shaking in his boots.. Yes, I am clearly afraid that armed men dressed in black are going to bust into my room, throw a bag over my head, and drag me to a Capitalist Re-education Camp.
See, the problem is, you aren't actually doing anything. You can say "fuck Kotick" ten times a day, you can sit in a chair with your hands balled into fists as you quake with such epic rage passers-by will think you're constipated, you can attempt to master the art of hating someone to death through sheer force of will, and you know what happens?
Nothing. Nothing happens.
You know what happens when an independent developer talks about what a bad person Bobby Kotick is? Businessmen think he's loony because Kotick is the one who's actually making his shareholders a giant pile of money.
Change follows profit. Raising an internet army to stand against the tyranny of Activision does absolutely nothing. For all the posturing, all the posts people make declaring how every decision Bobby Kotick makes is so stupid it just has to get him fired this time, for all the superiority complexes, nothing's actually ever changed, has it?
You seriously think it's an intelligent question to ask when Bobby Kotick is going to retract his statement? It's a PR line, not actual conversation. The point of PR is to paint the company in a positive light, even if it's proven incorrect. That doesn't even matter. It doesn't matter if the company is filing for bankruptcy. When Saddam's lackey let out propaganda that US forces were so disorganized and beaten they were committing suicide in the streets, do you think he believed it or cared if it was true?
If you want to change things, you need to actually convince people to be better consumers, and that's not going to happen in the arena of video-game rights and wrongs. It just isn't. People in the Western world are too conditioned to the throw-away society to actually look at any one subject matter, any one product, and understand the ins and outs of voting with their dollars. |

If they don't release a PC version, it will be because they have calculated everything and decided that it isn't worth it. Precisely. Then again, you're assuming the average gamer is comfortable with basic economic principles as well as the standard game development process, something that, clearly, isn't the case. You mean broad generalizations and assumptions about publishers and developers doing things like this just to spite us instead of basing decisions on financial validity are usually wrong?
Mind. Blown. |

| They're not taking away character creation, just the "origin story" concept. You don't get to choose a hastily-explained backstory that may come up again for another five lines of dialog in the entire rest of the game. |

And I'll agree that Blizzard games have a plot about as deep as a tuna can. you know different FF fans than I do then Yeah I'm not really a big FF fan or anything but listening to remixed One Winged Angel with electric guitars as Sephiroth and Cloud fight on a collapsing sky scraper is pretty good fan service if you ask me. It's basically Advent Fanservice. Why that's a problem for some, I've no idea... |

What we need is regulation and consumer protection on this industry because this kind of shit would generate a class action lawsuit in any other industry. No it wouldn't. Not a valid one at least.
Let's say you buy a Blockbuster gift card today, and Blockbuster goes out of business tomorrow. Your gift card is dead. Oh, well, so it goes. Or let's say you buy a new vaccuum, the company that made it goes out of business, and it breaks and needs a new part. Oh, well, in the trash it goes.
Even if you did decide to sue, who are you suing? RTW is dead. They can't afford an attorney to represent them, let pay any potential judgment. Sure, there's EA, but EA was just a distributor - RTW published it themselves. EA had no responsibility here, suing them for distributing is no different than suing the store that sold it or the trucking company that hauled it.
It's the risk of early adopting. We all do it in some capacity. As I mentioned in another thread, people that bought HD-DVD players got screwed, but they early adopted and it's a risk. Those of us that waited out the battle didn't take that risk, but we had to wait. The same thing happens all the time in every industry. Good ol' Beamer, how do you do, Mr anti-customer?
So let me guess, you'll also add that, the people who bought into beta instead of VHS deserved what they got, right?
You keep bringing up these examples which have no similarity to an MMO. When you bring home that vacuum, would it not work immediately upon usage(say it's DOA - fine, you can bring it back to the store for refund or exchange).
It's amazing that for a guy who claims that he works for this very industry(yet you hate your customers), that you're still not getting it.
APB. You buy it from EBGames/Gamestop, bring it home, find out that you can't play it(because the servers are dead) - you have no recourse. You can't refund it, because you've opened the box. Completely different scenario. This has nothing to do with early adoption.
Stop trying to confuse your customers(that's us) by trying to blur the lines between buying things that can be returned to the store, versus buying software which cannot be. Beamer isn't saying anything anti-consumer, he's just saying what happens in certain situations. You seem to think pointing at any given consumer-screwover and saying "That's not fair!" will magically fix it. It won't.
Customer service is nothing more than a set of smoke and mirrors. It's perpetuated because for-profit businesses make more money by doing so. When customer service becomes a money sink instead (the big example from this thread being the whole "they should've left the game running for longer after announcing the closure" nonsense,) it's likely to be ignored the same as any actual product that's no longer profitable. "Should be" is often very, very different from "practical." |

You know, this idea itself isn't too bad, but Bobby Kotick is being all Bobby Kotick all over it. You can't just stich together cutscenes from most games, you'd need to do some careful vid-capping and editing to make sure all the plot-relevant stuff that happens outside of full-on cutscenes gets in there, too, along with appropriate bits of gameplay to keep the pacing going well, decent cuts between shots, etc.
Straight-ripping the cutscenes and charging twenty bucks for it? No. Add it to the bonuses you get for buying your Uber Delux Mega Edition, or as free-to-non-second-hand-buyers DLC, and sell it sepretly at a much lower price point. In a simple video format that will play on my media player of choice (if not on a DVD) without DRM.
Example of how to do this right: Metal Gear Solid 3 - Subsistance. |

Again, it's no less complex than any "traditional" RTS, just with more variety between races and minus the daft micromanaging. |
