That's actually the ending in the book. It was already the canon ending.
Of course, Last Light isn't an adaptation of Metro 2034, so it's not much of a justification. |

Verno wrote on Feb 19, 2013, 08:47: Maybe the PC crowd isn't as interested in yearly COD updates? I think the last COD game I enjoyed playing online was World at War, every year brings reduced features and a higher cost of entry. The FPS market these days is pretty limited but I see plenty of people playing TF2, CSS, CS:GO and more PC centric FPS games.
It's also only one genre, but I guess since it's the genre CoD belongs to it's the only one that matters. Some hard-hitting garme jernalizm there, Ars
It's also not even news. The leap from "more console players" (which everyone has known is true for years upon years) to "more players using controllers" is like something Glenn Beck would arrive at making pretentious doodles on his chalkboard.
Also, do we have to go back ten years and start having conversations about the publisher making a fuckton more money from a PC sale than a console sale on account of not having to pay Sony/Microsoft their crazy licensing fees?
wtf_man wrote on Feb 19, 2013, 09:04:
Maybe they aren't interested in cruddy console ports, which is what they all are nowadays.
Everyone can say what they want about CoD (and this being a Blues comment thread, I'm sure everyone will,) but they're some of, if not the best ports released, and I suspect this is a major reason why many PC gamers stick with it.

I've never heard of most of these and the ones I have heard of are of such journalistic integrity and competence that I assume the opposite of whatever they say is true.
Considering how easily people will jump on gaming sites for ridiculous conduct and shamelessly pushing opinions as objective fact (deservedly so, in most cases,) I just don't understand why reviews as a concept are trusted so much without any fuss.

Squeenix had a survey on possible names for a new Legacy of Kain (Obsidian Blood, Obsidian Sun, Dead Sun, and Revenant) but this was around the middle of last year.
The spread on like/dislike for different entries in this series has me a little boggled. I can understand holding the first one in high regard, but either a) completely discounting the rest or b) holding Soul Reaver (and it's block puzzles) above the other 3D installments is just weird. Standard gameplay? I don't recall other 3D platformers featuring regular travel to the spirit world for taking advantage of warping terrain, insubstantial water, paused time and abilities that didn't work in the physical world. Although, Defiance really dropped the ball on keeping the spectral realm relevant.
And no hate at all for Blood Omen 2? That was like, the example for how not to handle a sequel that generation. Metal Gear players who never got over Raidan may disagree, but Raidan was at least intentional.
Trevellian wrote on Feb 11, 2013, 10:52: That being said... No Crystal Dynamics, no interest. They made the Legacy/Soul Reaver series. I doubt anyone else can do it justice. Kind of funny to think about how CrystalD stole the franchise from Silicon Knights after the first one and didn't use any of their pre-production for the sequel they were planning. There are people who swear to this day that Silicon Knights would've made the rest of the series a bazillion times more awesome, but I just think "Phew, dodged a bullet there" after Too Human and X-Men: Destiny.
Of course, Amy Hennig is long gone from there... |

I would rather have the latest version of BlazBlue get a full-priced PC port than any of the other current high-profile fighting games getting a sale.
I would also like Freespace 3 while we're at it. |

Let's not forget Crimson Echoes, the fan interquel made using Chrono Trigger's engine that got a C&D letter like a week before they were going to post it for download.
The people running that company are bugfuck nanners. "TOO MUCH FAN INTEREST STOP IT IMMEDIATELY WAIT WHY IS NO ONE BUYING THE RELEASE OF THE ORIGINAL." And don't even get me started on their whole "We won't remake FF7 because it would be REALLY HARD to make things like towns and the world map work correctly in that old style on the current-gen hardware" nonsense. |

Cyanotetyphas wrote on Feb 5, 2013, 15:09: Chrono Cross was a good game in its own right and it build on and adapted the systems in Chrono Trigger for the modern era. But it does seem like they're afraid of the IP. The only references to the original in the game are a guarded reference to Magus and the explanation of the final boss. And why would you make a sequel to a time hopping IP where you are unceremoniously stuck in time? All of which is okay, but then they drop the series cold because they need more time for....FFX-2? Running their MMOs? Does the top brass not even like the game?
Also seconding Vagrant Story. Another boundary pusher that was one and done for some reason. Its hard to find games that have that kind of love invested in every corner. They dropped the series cold because they were expecting the Chrono Trigger re-release on the DS to sell really well and it didn't. There was even a story awhile back about someone from Squeenix telling the fanbase that if they really wanted a new game in the series, they should've bought more copies of Chrono Trigger.
I remember reading that the plan for Guile in Chrono Cross was for him to be revealed as Magus, but it was dropped at some point. In "Radical Dreamers," the character who turned into Guile turned out to be Magus in the end (it's been a looooooong time since I've read up on any of this but I believe in the Japanese version of Chrono Cross, Guile's name is Alf instead of the original Gil, so there are also a subset of players who think he's Magus' cat Alfador.)
As far as Chrono Cross having very little connection to the original goes, I always thought it was rather genius that this was actually part of the plot. It's like Blood Omen 2; the entire setting and events of the game only exist because of what happened in Chrono Trigger, and that's why you can't find El Nido on the Chrono Trigger world map somewhere near Guardia and Porre where it should be; it didn't exist. Chrono Cross is basically Chrono Trigger's last sidequest; there's no way to help Magus find Schala in Chrono Trigger, and Chrono Cross ties up that loose end.
One bit of fun I had with that... once you've reached the end-game in Chrono Trigger and Gaspar gives you all the remaining sidequests, one of his lines is something akin to "Someone very close to you needs help, find this person, fast!" and he'll never stop saying it like he stops saying the other lines as you finish the quests. I totally bought this as intentional foreshadowing for Chrono Cross for years, like they had to cut out finding Schala and left the line in because they planned to solve it with its own game. Alas, it turned out it was just a really poorly translated line and Gaspar wasn't supposed to be saying anything important.

Costs more to buy a used copy and online pass than to just buy a new game.) I'd wager Gamestop does that because they trust their customers to be so uninformed they don't realize it's cheaper to buy the game new, so they can squeeze out a few extra dollars on the used copy than if the price made sense. Considering their entitlement complex about making as much money as possible off of used sales, I'm sure it's also an intentional middle-finger to the industry telling them their attempt to devalue second-hand games is completely irrelevant.
Given how gamers tend to be some of the least informed consumers out there (witness the post you're responding to that couldn't figure out the online pass is for used copies despite the phrases "$9.99 online pass" and "used console game sales" being separated by a whole three words in Blue's write-up) it probably works with little trouble. |

Excellent port. Crashed on me once about five minutes in, then ran perfect when I went through my first playthrough in two sittings.
This really is an improvement over even the best of the last installments in many ways. It's probably the best-looking UE3 game we'll ever see, and the art direction is much more interesting. There's color (mostly in the supernatural version of the city, in a nice twist) everywhere, characters are all unique and memorable, sometimes because they did a very good job making them gross and disturbing. See figure: the Succubus. If the new Dante turns you off, the new Vergil should balance that out nicely with the way he's gone through the de-anime filter. None of the backtracking nonsense from DMC4, either. Or the alternate protagonist nonsense, for that matter.
My one complaint is difficulty. It's not as piss-weak easy as DMC2 was, but it won't be giving Ninja Gaidan a run for its money like the American DMC3 did. |
