Some fair points, many reviewers do seem to ding for length in otherwise quality games. To be fair though, I don't think there's any hard and fast rule for length, it's just an inherently subjective thing based on genre and the actual game content. Some games overstay their welcome by focusing on minutiae and busywork, others are so good they leave you wanting more. I think it's always better to focus on the base experience and not worry about padding things out, that is always really transparent and just serves to annoy more than anything else.
Unfortunately the big focus on Metacritic ratings means devs keep doing this. |

| I'm sure this will invite a lot of "what have you done for me lately?" posts on Garriott but he has some good points. Most designers these days seem hellbent on pandering to the lowest common denominator with horrible game mechanics like QTEs and busywork. I'm not sure why videogames think they need to be movies to such a literal degree either, many recent AAA entries resemble movies more than interactive games. |

I haven't tried the MP yet but the SP campaign is quite good outside of the dumb QTEs. It seems kinda silly that they're just doing MP DLC though, they could probably make some decent bank doing smaller Bethesda style expansions.
Speaking of QTEs, when will this horrid design crutch die already? Maybe if QTEs were in any way intelligent or required some actual thought process I could behind them but just literally hammering the key when prompted to on screen is mind numbing shit. |

I really don't need crazy weather and more filters that obscure vision, BF3 had more than enough.
More destruction is welcome however, BF3 had very little compared to BC2 and the placement of it often didn't have much strategic impact.
Waiting for the insane blue filter/dubstep trailer |

I suppose if you succumb to their BS and have Origin, good for you. It is up to 70% off their titles.
F them.
Quick glance through, they jacked everything to full retail then applied sale price. Most games can be had cheaper via Steam, Amazon, GOG, GMG, etc. That is really amusing and scummy, I'm not the slightest bit surprised EA would pull a tactic like that. I recall Best Buy being caught doing it several times. |

I would ask you the same question. The companies largely ignore user comments and buy up a good portion of their reviews with advertising dollars anyway. Have you seen what development costs have become? It's not sustainable at its current rate of growth, there is no math to support it other than titles moving unrealistic numbers on each platform. That's why the industry is trying to wring every last penny out of DLC and etc.

I'm referring to many of them featuring chokes with too many large, empty areas in between. A large playing area is great but if the points aren't spread out or numerous enough its a bit superfluous. The Armored Kill expansion alleviated that to some extent but I would still love to see several other maps redesigned with the actual space in mind.
I did a line by line list of each map last year but I'm not finding it with search at the moment. Comparing the base maps with the updated BF2 maps for example is pretty jarring. |

| They can't even give away Windows Phone here, its a dead platform right now and I don't see that changing any time soon. They should bought up Blackberry a few years ago and worked with Nokia to salvage its user base. Given Microsofts long running history of abandoning their mobile platforms I don't have any faith this one will be any different. |

No way, he's porting his game to save kittens and maybe even the world! I better support his heroic crusade to port the game he said he didn't want to port to the platform he labeled as best suited to Excel spreadsheets.

Yeah for sure. Optional builtin VoIP is a must IMHO. Community servers feel totally lifeless without it and it really neuters teamwork and reinforces the me first, point grinding hero aspects of the game. I have never heard a good argument against optional VoIP, it's always a mishmash of "I dont wanna hear other people" or "just use mumble with friends" which totally misses the point. EA didn't do it last time because they didn't want to pay the seat licensing for their VoIP but there are plenty of reasonably priced codecs and integration libraries these days.

I thought BF3 was a pretty decent game all things considered, I think its faults were more related to choke heavy/console friendly map design, anti-cheat and the failure to release any community modding tools. The competitive scene for it was pretty much DOA, most clans/people just pub stomp with buddies.
I am a bit worried that EA has so much riding on this game that we'll see even more microtransactions. The whole pay to unlock thing was really lame when they introduced it. At least the mini expansions were meaningful content I guess. Less grind mechanics and better design please. Anti-cheat matters, please do something other than Punkbuster this time.
No way I'll preorder, definitely a wait and see thing after how SimCity turned out. I'd rather see a 2143 style BF game again, the "modern" setting is getting played out pretty quickly. |

Dev wrote on Mar 19, 2013, 04:37: Also, its unlikely that simcity sold poorly. Its been selling too well (apparently no one bothered to check pre-order numbers before counting servers) that caused much of their problems. On bluesnews alone, you have several people who bought it, despite everything known beforehand. Now think about clueless people who hear the name "simcity" and run out to buy it on that alone. 1.1 million sales is nothing to sneeze at but for a company like EA who spends more than that on marketing alone it's not really a big success either. I doubt SimCity will meet expectations if it experiences the usual post-release drop off. We'll start to see how aggressive their DLC strategy is if it doesn't push past 3 mil in the next month. Bioshock Infinite is coming out soon and will start stealing headlines and ad space as well. EA has BF4 coming up too though which many here won't care about but it will generate a lot of interest online.
EA really needs to change their overall structure, they can't really continue the way they've been going, continually upping the ante with every release. |
