I'd like to see Rockstar make a Star Wars game so maybe this won't turn out so bad after all. Telltale with some of those old LucasArts adventure IPs would be nice too.

Jesus, some of my favorite games were made by LucasArts. They haven't been that same company for a long time now but this still sucks

TIE Fighter, Grim Fandango, Dark Forces, Maniac Mansion, Monkey Island, Full Throttle, The Dig, etc. So many great games

Brink was the game that made me say no more preorders unless its a brand with people behind it who I trust implicitly. I don't care what preorder crap they offer, 9/10 its just not worth it when you could just wait or get it cheaper. Sometimes you can find good deals though, someone here linked a Tomb Raider/Bioshock combo thing that was like $53 so I took a chance on that because hey, $26 for each ain't bad.

Do you mean at original COH launch? I can't really remember what they were like in the old old beta but I found mortars pretty balanced in general. They didn't do much to light vehicles and had to reason to fear infantry. In COH2 they can obliterate stuff almost before you can even react to it which is just off balance wise even if it is more realism rooted. Like the Blizzard mechanics its just not an enjoyable thing, they need to be toned down.

I'm all for breaking turtles but super mortars seem like a dumb way to go about it.

One thing I noticed too is the reliance on munition abilities and unlocks to provide things like AT capabilities, seems like a poor design choice for a game where they want the losing side to manage comebacks.

News Comments > Diablo III Co-Op Improvement Plans
20. Re: Diablo III Co-Op Improvement Plans Apr 3, 2013, 11:28 Verno

To each his own man, its your time and money, I wouldn't begrudge you for enjoying it, everyone has different taste after all. The "working adult with a family" thing probably describes most gamers on this site though. No one wants to mindlessly spend time with little reward or end goal in sight, that's the whole problem with Diablo 3 in many respects. The problem I have with the "casual fun" defense of Diablo 3 is that you can have that in a Diablo game and still have all of the customization and depth too, they aren't mutually exclusive concepts for ARPGs. Diablo 2 did it pretty well after all and this is a sequel to that game.

I'm a pretty patient and lenient gamer, I can make a lot of excuses for a game if I can enjoy it. If they had gotten itemization right and fucked up everything else I could probably forgive that. Sadly the fucked up too many things essential to the overall game. The thing is people want Diablo to be great. No one wants a bad game that they paid for. All of the complaints and bitching reveal the issues people are having and the few sources of praise tell what little they did right. I hope they truly take feedback into account for the expansion and don't just dismiss it.

In the meantime I do appreciate them patching and supporting the product. Too many companies still don't these days after all and you have to give credit where it's due. I don't "hate" the game, that word is totally abused on the internet these days. I just think so far its been surpassed by other games due to very poor design decisions that conflict with the core of an ARPG game.

Thanks Verno. I liked CoH but never really got into it. I haven't played it for a while now but I seem to remember it looked washed out. I don't really get what True Sight is, it sounds like what every game in this genre would claim to have.

What is ROF? If Rate of Fire, isn't it being low a bad attribute, which would help balance it?

What is APM?

What is vCOH? A mod? A typo?

True Sight basically means your units can only see whats in their true cone of vision instead of just a blanket portion of the battlefield. So if they are near a building they can't magically see whats behind the building, it remains in fog of war until one person in the squad has sight on it. In theory it lets you setup ambushes and stuff but it isn't well accommodated in map design so far.

APM = actions per minute, an RTS term
vCOH = vanilla COH
ROF = Rate of Fire, mortar rate of fire is quite high and travel time is quite low (I typo'd there, sorry didnt have my coffee yet)

Hell, I had a pretty serious hate-on for Blizzard for a long time after the major screw-up that was Diablo 3, but if the next Starcraft comes out and is great (with a goddamn OFFLINE mode!) I am still getting it.

It's out and reception has been fairly lukewarm

I get what you meant though, just grinding your gears

Gearbox owes EA some money for SimCity taking the heat off them.

Also I lol'd at the "Nissan Leaf DLC" aka downloadable ads story, I hope that was an April Fools thing.

I thought there were single player skirmishes in the beta.
Thanks for the feedback by the way. Did you preorder from Steam or somewhere else?

Steam. The beta just gets added automatically for preorders. You can skirmish against the AI but all games are accessed through the "Online" main menu item.

eh, you are new. Anyway. If you want d2, go play the other games that are available that "built" on that. PoE, Titan Quest, etc.

His registration date doesn't matter, that's a pretty pointless tag. I do agree though that if people want an authentic ARPG experience like Diablo 2 that they shouldn't really play Diablo 3

There are simply better games to play, Diablo 3 is sort of a failed in between that might keep people occupied for a bit but never really satisfies. It does some things right (visual polish and presentation) but unfortunately they're not the things that matter.

Love me some COH, I've logged an alarming 400+ hours in the first game according to Steam, so much so that my girlfriend knows all of the character catchphrases. I played a bunch in the "beta stress test" last night and it was surprisingly problem free. My bullet point impressions below.

- Graphically game seems a bit worse in terms of visual detail on units
- new engine is much tighter performance wise though
- Mortars are absurdly overpowered, low ROF and travel time, too much damage to both personnel and armor
- Suppression is a bit nerfed
- True Sight is actually good but underutilized due to map design so far (only like 6 maps in the beta, most are wide open)
- Blizzard mechanics are totally pointless and add nothing to the game
- Any steam connectivity issue will bomb out games, even games in progress
- Doctrines are replaced by commanders which do the same thing. You just earn points to unlock things, you don't need to spend them.
- Leveling system has balance related items like build speed ups, accuracy, damage, etc (I dont like this)
- Easy to spot where the microtransactions will come in, hard to tell if they will matter or not though
- Just MP in the beta, no SP. They do have all AI difficulties in though and the AI is much better than previous games though it still has ridiculous APM.
- UI sucks. Too many like colors clustered together, makes info at a glance hard to discern. UI is also too big (again). Really hope they change this.

It's definitely in better shape than vCOH was at launch. Combat pace is a bit faster and less methodical. It is more difficult to turtle now for sure. I don't think it's fair to compare it to COH + 2 expansions but this is definitely promising. I did prefer the older modeling work, these seem a bit washed out but I can't complain about the engine performance now.

So now that THQ has gone the tubes. Where exactly is Relic? And who owns them again? (Or are they independent but just had a publishing deal with THQ??)

Sega

What are the RPG elements that are missing in Borderlands?

A bunch of different, subjective things but more than anything else I wanted stronger customization and character depth from it. Borderlands is fine for what it is but I feel like it's a bunch of surface elements strung together. Very limited character roles and interplay between classes. The itemization doesn't really do much to further it either. I want something that goes a bit deeper character-wise and I don't think that has to come at the expense of the shooting side of the gameplay necessarily.

Day of Defeat, le sigh. My favorite mod which languished after Valve bought the IP, I've never seen a community dry up so quickly.

Odd, last time I played DoD there were plenty of servers full and tons of players compared to plenty of other games that were just released last month.

Anecdotally I don't see a lot of growth in the NA user base and the custom map scene seems to have suffered. I still go back and play it every now and then but its hard to grow a community around a game that only gets support releases. I think it's a testament to how solid the core game was that the game still has a large EU presence though, it's good to hear people are still playing.

Doesn't Borderlands meet those criteria, other than the Diablolike environment?

Obviously very subjective but I think Borderlands veers too much into shooter territory for my taste, the RPG elements are practically nonexistent. The maps are all static affairs too. I know their original marketing was the whole "diablo with guns" spiel but I feel like they didn't tick off enough boxes to earn that. Hellgate London sucked execution-wise but there is room for something like it in the market IMHO.
