Edit: Verno, those are global sales numbers where PS4 is available in something like 2 or 3 times the number of countries The gap is considerably closer in the US and I believe they only passed MS in the last week of the year (while also having an extra week on the market). At the least they could be selling many more, and more likely they should probably be crushing MS right now.

Errr of course they're global sales, why would I post US only sales? It is a total sales comparison. Microsoft cherry picked the markets it thought it would do the best in and so did Sony. Sony is available in more markets and yet still sold out so I don't think Microsoft being in the same number of countries matters or not when they aren't sold out in the 8 or so major markets they chose to launch in.

If Valve accomplishes nothing here but forcing MS and Sony to open their systems up and get rid of software exclusivity... then we are all winners.

That is never, ever going to happen. It erodes too many of the reasons that people buy consoles for in the first place.

Personally I would love to see Valve succeed here and create a niche but I think this approach is too messy and I don't think their controller will win anyone over.

You can do it right now (they released it a few weeks ago) but it's pretty rough around the edges and requires modification to dualboot/etc. They strongly cautioned people to wait until a more stable release, this is mainly for crazy tinkerers like me.

I'm not sure I care for the AI being integrated with the players, bad AI can really annoy in multiplayer.

OH NO YOU DIDNT GIRL! Speechless

It's a 2010, it actually doesn't put out much heat surprisingly. Thing sure is bloody heavy though. If the PQ wasn't so beautiful I'd get something else but I've never found anything comparable for under 3k.

Sony's PS4 is currently losing to the XBOne not because of an inferior product, but because of supply problems. Stores are filled to the brim with XBOne's and get new shipments every day (I wonder if they learned that from the Wii launch), while stores are barely sent enough PS4's to actually put one on a shelf.

This is a digression from the main discussion but Sony isn't losing anything, they've sold 4.1 million PS4s to the Xbox Ones 3 million. Judging by those numbers their supply chain is fine, the problem is that demand was so insanely high that they couldn't realistically hope to meet it. That's a good problem to have

How did Sony get access to utilize DirectX on a closed, directly competing platform? Valve will need to take a similar step to make their machines truly viable and reduce fragmentation among developers.

They licensed it from Microsoft. Valve won't do the same thing because they want to get away from Microsoft dependency, not increase it. The Windows 8 store really pissed Gabe off.

It's actually a pretty smart idea on their part and while I'm not that into SOE titles anymore the value proposition is fairly solid.

So that part of it is easily fixed. Now they just need to focus on actually making that blow seem as if it actually hurt, rather than the toon you hit just go "ah" and not even move when you just hit him in the head with a daedric warhammer.

Yeah but I think they could do more. The mods are a bandaid on a bigger problem. The combat is pretty clunky in general and could really do with a feedback redesign especially. It's hard to do FPS/RPG stuff but I think they're still pretty far off the mark. I'd love to have first melee combat with the responsiveness and feedback of something like Dark Souls. Likewise the games animations are stiff and unnatural, I always feel major uncanny valley when I'm playing an ES game.

Hey, if the only thing holding them back is a marketing campaign... sounds like an easy fix doesn't it You are the second or third person here that has for some reason assumed that they won't advertise their new product. Why? What other way are they going to win this battle against mega-corporations MS and Sony? Not only will Valve directly market SteamOS, but every company making SteamBox's will be marketing their own hardware as well.

No I think they will advertise it but I don't think that's a magical bandaid that will undo decades of branding from other companies. The controller is going to be a major adjustment for people too and there's also the issue with platform fragmentation when you have this many vendors involved. I really like this idea but where we disagree is that I think their implementation is more niche than it is mass market.

But hey if its a massive success then that's great for me either way

Shame they blew it with Rome 2 and Sega has a bad enough track record with the Aliens license already. How does someone find any hope in this combination?

It's a survival horror game and goes back to Alien which was more of a survival horror film. Creative Assembly has it's ups and downs but is generally well liked. I see no reason not to be optimistic with that combination. I've been played some good games Sega has done and some bad ones, a bit of a mixed bag. I didn't say I was going to run out and preorder it either, just that's intriguing and I will definitely be following its development.

Origin actually has gotten somewhat useable. If Steam didn't beat the snot out of it in every category it might even be an acceptable alternative. The worst part about Origin, of course, is the company it belongs to. They are equal parts despicable and moronic.

I think the best way to describe Origin is adequate but not much more than that. It's integration with EA titles is bizarrely inconsistent, the interface is barebones and it has a very "we contracted this out" feel to it. They don't seem to have any unifying design direction or feature roadmap either, they're just sort of puttering along and whole areas of it feel completely divorced from others. It does have a few features Steam lacks though like video recording, unfortunately its shortcomings in most other areas overshadow that. The biggest fail is that they have nothing on the Steam community implementation, battlelog would be the closest comparison but it's BF only.

It's basically an adequate storefront with schizophrenic client software. Like most things EA does these days, it feels very poorly thought out and half assed.

I like Alien, I like survival horror and I think Creative Assembly is an interesting choice to make this. So long as Gearbox and the now defunct Timegate are not involved color me intrigued.

The QTE shit at the beginning of the game is obnoxious but they tend to drop off as the game progresses. Unfortunately the game also introduces interesting ideas like hunting for food and other mechanics but does nothing with them. It also reverts to a set piece to set piece action game by the mid point of the game. It was still a great game but its obvious they had a few design shifts mid-swing.

1. Mom walks into store to buy her child a game system with zero prior knowledge.
2. Mom sees XBox, PS4, and 8 different SteamOS boxes on the shelf.
3. XBox and PS4 get ignored while Mom is trying to figure out which SteamBOX would be the best bang for her buck.

All they need is 1 SteamBox on the shelf that matches the price point of the other consoles and they will win this war in a laugh-er.

Mom has no way of knowing that these things exist and goes with what the television told her is good.

I agree with most of your other points but when it comes to video games parents think of what has been heavily marketed to them or what their kids ask for. I would not buy one of these for a kid either, get them a Wii U or something.

Obligatory: I liked Fallout 3 better But yeah, when it comes down to it Bethesda is one of the few companies making games I actually enjoyed playing. Lots of time spent in Fallout 3 and NV with tons of mods. Though I gotta say.. the next game by Beth better be 64bit trough and through and not use Gamebryo

I don't really care what they use but they need to hire better animators and someone needs to revisit the combat engine. Loved Skyrim but those aspects are really showing their age.
