News Comments > MS/Mojang $2.5B Deal Confirmed

And of course, this game is now ruined. Time to save the current version and figure out a way to keep it from auto-updating so my Minecraft server doesn't become a wreck.

I'd like to know this as well.

I have zero issue with Notch getting a shitload of cash. I just wish he'd picked someone besides MS, who would actually take care of the IP and not abuse the fuck out of it for their own gains.

Guess it was a good run. A 2 billion dollar indie game is nothing to sneeze at.

Mojang doesn't own the Minecraft IP

Then who does?
Notch Enterprises AB

Forbes article:
Swedish tax documents from April that were obtained by FORBES show that Mojang, which restructured ownership stakes earlier this year, is wholly-owned by a Swedish entity known as Notch Development. Persson controls 71% of Notch Development through Notch Enterprises AB, according to the documents. Porsér owns 21% while CEO Manneh controls 8%.

At a $2 billion purchase price, Persson would receive more than $1.4 billion before taxes if the deal was paid in all cash. That money would come in addition to payments from Mojang to license the “Minecraft” title he created. In the past, the company’s disclosed that it paid entities affiliated with Persson more than $100 million per year in 2012 and 2013 for licensing fees. According to Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter, Microsoft would presumably be acquiring both Mojang and the rights to “Minecraft” from Persson in the potential deal.

Thank you for the link! I wouldn't be nearly as upset about this if MS kept their paws off of Minecraft. But I can't see that happening...

I am not a LOTR fan... I mean, I like the movies... But I don't go around gobbling up everything with their name.

Plus, for the most part, just about any game made from movie/book IP is crap...

But I looked into some gameplay yesterday for Shadow of Mordor, and it looks fun... Yes, the combat looks like batman... Climbing shit looks like AC, which is a good thing...

But the way they're doing the advancement, both the rune system, and the Sauron Army part, looks great (mostly the latter). Combine some subterfuge, with some sabotage, some stealth kills, and some direct free for all combat, and I like what I'm seeing.

So I pre-ordered from GMG for 25% off : )

One of the vids that helped is here.

That's a pretty good video, for someone like myself who's not familiar with the game. I see it's doing the whole "season pass" deal, so I might wait a year for the GOTY edition, but I hope it's good. It looks fun, I'll say that, and I like the upgrade system.

Nice knowing you Minecraft.

Pretty much that. They'll fuck it up, try and make it an exclusive (with updates only going to where they want), and then when it bombs, abandon it completely, while having a deathgrip on the IP, so no one else can use it.

Outside of maybe EA, this is the worst group to sell out to.

For free?

EDIT: It's also not a direct competitor to the 300i.

Well the video sure implies that.

I love the way the video likes to point out the ship folks bought previously is now old hat, and you should by this new one, if you'd like to keep up.

Classy.

Game costs $60, if you preorder, you'll get discount. If you already bought Alpha or beta, you'll of course get Mercenary Edition. What's so complicated?

How does that make sense? Jesus. WHERE DOES THE $5/POUND COME INTO THE EQUATION? DO YOU SEE THAT PART THERE????? How are we getting a discount on something already paid for?

On their forum faq it says this:

The Premium Beta will be available once the Alpha phase is completed. Beta is where the whole game will come together, and by taking part you will have the opportunity for you to play, test and feedback to us.

Each of the Alpha and Beta products gives automatic access to the following development stages, and of course a download copy of the released game!
