I'll be sure to look out for players and wild months on the loose Oh wait, you meant lose players. Nevermind.

I wonder if they're ever going to honor their "You buy the sp game now, and we'll give you the MMO one for free" promise.

Because I get the strange feeling that they've conveniently forgotten about that.

Creston

The only thing I ever recall them saying about the MMO and free was that the MMO was planned to be free-to-play with microtransactions.

If you can find a source for your specific information, it would be interesting.

I remember all the the comments about how project offset was going to be the greatest thing ever because the graphics were movie like. And some of the more sober of us kept saying "this is just a tech demo" but people wouldn't listen.

And they wouldn't listen because they were right. Project Offset was both a game and engine. There's even gameplay video posted on YouTube.

Tons of good fixes but I don't see any mention of late game performance or really any performance improvements at all.

You didn't read closely then:

Additional pathfinder optimization.

If you read the original dev posts, they believed a good part of the performance problems towards the end game were a result of the pathfinding algorithms used for workers and AI units.

I bought this game at release, played it for a couple days and quit.

The biggest problem for me is that there were no US servers. So even with a great internet connection you were lucky to have a 250 ping...a far cry from the 20-30 ping I have for any other game.

If you want to do business in a country, have servers in that country. That goes for US countries wanting to do business in Japan, and vice versa.

Funny, there are US WoW servers, and most people consider a 250ms ping to be pretty good to them

I have an excellent internet connection at home and latency to the various WoW servers has always been a bit high. (And before you blame my connection, it's 22mb down/5mb up, and various speed test sites show an average latency of around 20ms.)

What does someone get at this point with just the World of Warcraft account? Like you buy that $5 thing for a month of play, but none of the expansions, including cataclysm. Are you still looking at basically a different game than before? I'd be interested in trying it again if so.

Would someone mind going into detail about some of the differences?

Blizzard explains the differences and what you get on worldofwarcraft.com in a pretty obvious place. But the short of it is that the game is different, even for those that just have the original WoW game and none of the expansions.

But honestly, most of the good content is in the WoTLK and Cataclysm expansion. (Except for the Goblins; they suck.)

IF!!! I'm getting Cataclysm... does that mean I'm getting a free month? Or do I have to pay 30,- PLUS 13,-? Because that would be a bigass demotivator.

No free month. The best offer you'll get is a free week of game time if you haven't already re-activated your account. At least, that's how it used to work.

Who is asking for your sympathy, DrEvil?

Who asked for yours? You expressed your sympathy and explained why, and I expressed why I wouldn't provide my sympathy. Seems fair.

Unlike most, Blizzard did something and made an awesome company out of themselves. They still run a business and must make smart decisions throughout(profits for their investers, etc...).

Except they didn't; or did you hear about the whole Activision thing?

It would be foolish to start with the max (what is this number btw?) number of servers before they work their way up and tweak things. They can make an educated guess, but thats about it. We can all look at the money Blizzard makes, but where were you when no one knew their names and they worked late nights and dropped a ton of effort behind what they were doing?

Working late nights and a ton of effort at a different software development company that also makes obscene amounts of money? (Although I personally don't.)

The great thing about Ameirca is, when you really think about it. You can do whatever you so desire. Go make blizzard2 man, and make all of us proud!:)

No interest, sorry. I stand by my original comment. No sympathy for the filthy rich; that's exactly how it should be.

Despite the fact that you appear to be falling over yourself to praise Blizzard, I'd note that I doubt every employee of Blizzard or customer feels the same as you do.

Better than previous expansions where many players were met with "World Server Down" type stuff for the first three days. It's either come a long way or there are a lot less players these days. Probably a bit of A and B. I do sympathize with Blizzard however as provisioning for a handful of high resource load days a year doesn't make any sense financially.

I have little sympathy for their financials when they sell transparent, glowy horses for $25 apiece. With the mega profits they're making, they could easily afford the extra provisioning, and still make obscene amounts of cash.

Yes they do. I mean who doesn't want to buy games you don't with a very slight chance you might win a game you do want. R.U.S.E. is horrid. It should be $10 or less.

Yeah, you might say this was all a "RUSE" to sell copies of "R.U.S.E". *rimshot*. Thanks folks, I'll be here all night.

Aren't all of these maps just the extra maps that were available depending on which retailer you bought from? The point being that people who insist on having "EVERYTHING" can get it now?

Not that I am saying people should have to pay 10 bucks for them. Charging for plain maps when the game ships with a map editor is wonky. If they had any original content to them that might be different.

Indeed, they are. That's why most of the complaints are so funny. "You should be working on patches, not maps!"

Like you, I agree it seems to be in poor taste to charge this much for the maps. It seems obvious why they offered them individually though given that those that already have one of the other maps as a pre-order bonus can buy just the other three.

Although it's a bit of a snub in the face of those that pre-ordered since to complete their collection of the four maps, they'll spend $8.97 USD, while people who have none of them can buy the complete map pack for only $9.99 USD. So the "discount" on the four map pack is definitely heavily biased towards people that have none of them.

I haven't bought any of the DLC yet, and probably won't. I'll just wait for the expansion or some super-mega-steam sale where I get the map pack for $0.99 USD

No it is not impossible but it is a lot harder and boring to play the game that way. Much easier and fun to play with the right people.

This was the game designer's choice to somewhat guide you towards joining into a player corp, but if you decide you do not want to play that way there is the NPC corp where you can still talk to others but you are not forced to do anything, it is all your choice.

Again this game is just not for you, doesn't mean there is anything wrong with the game mechanics itself.

Note I never said the game mechanics were wrong; just that I found them *boring*.

Certainly, if EVE wants to remain a niche game that's only attractive to a relatively small set of individuals, that's their choice.

I find it much easier to be critical of EVE now that I'm no longer playing (sorry, *paying* for) it.

And no, I'm not much of a social gamer

This is an MMO not a single player game. The whole idea is to interact with others if you just play solo the game is definitely boring. Like you said this game is just not for you, and that doesn't mean the game is bad just not for you.

I have no problem with interaction; I have a problem with interaction on forced terms.

Just like how WoW is not for me because I can't stand it, but that doesn't stop millions of other gamers to enjoy it.

WoW has plenty of content for gamers that want to socialise on their own terms. WoW gives you the choice. You can get by perfectly without ever joining a guild (as an example).

EVE makes it impossible to progress at any meaningful pace without becoming heavily involved in the corporations/social aspect of the game.

Wrong.

So I'm wrong even though the only time you've ever been ganked in high-sec was already fixed by CCP?

It wasn't the only time.

Okay yeah, it can happen under some extreme circumstances and a few not-so-extreme ones. By the time you're done with the tutorial you've already got 6+ ships. Then the first arc they send you on brings in enough income to buy about 20 more ships.

I'll amend my earlier statements by saying that flying around high sec is no more dangerous than your average trip to the grocery store.

Dangerous isn't the issue; the issue is the game is boring as hell. I wasn't aware they had finally gotten rid of the timesink learning skills, if that's true, at least they're finally improving the game in meaningful ways.

Seriously; if I had spend any more time mining some stupid asteroid belt, I was going to go mad.

And no, I'm not much of a social gamer (what was your first clue?), so don't tell me I should join a corporation/whatever. I wanted a space game with occasional social activity. I don't want it to be forced on me as the only alternative to the mind-numbingly boring opportunities the game presents otherwise.

Don't even get me started on how tedious and boring most of the combat missions were -- especially when you spent more time flying around to each location than actually fighting.
