This is probably the best bet because the Mechwarrior license was acquired by former Microprose employees.

Microprose is one of my two favorite studios ever.

I still have fond memories of making my first jet-carrier trap and chasing down a cruise missile at sea level in Fleet Defender.

A hardcore MW game with modern physics would be truly awesome. I'd almost call it too good to be true but maybe the next gen consoles will get a bit more ambitious.

There's nothing preventing the same thing from happening again, they just moved the browser out of the client. In fact if anything its more likely to occur because of potential problems with the web plugins and browser compatibility.

The fact that I loaded up Origin and was able to use it and the Battlelog browser with the same firewall and no problems tells me that is not likely the case. I could browse servers, look at stats screens, etc.

The only option in the BC2 beta was "join a game now" if that tells you anything.

Don't be hilarious, nobody expects it to be fixed in the gold copy, but the 0-day patch which everyone know will come on release day will likely fix plenty of things Add to that that the beta really was a month old when it started they had 2 months to fix issues, and i have no doubt they did that.

Don't tell me you haven't been around BC2 rel on pc and what a crap-fest that was on release. With this a lot more rides on it for EA so they will make sure EVERY issue is patched and every little nagging detail is addressed. The alternative is to lose to Cod which releases a whole month later, its during that time BF3 either wins or loses the war.

So yeah

Yep, BC2's in-game browser was inop on release and then died again months later after a patch for some of us with a hardware firewall. There was a period of several weeks where I couldn't play a game that I had been playing for months.

I'm glad to see the in-game browser gone.

I'm pretty sure the game play portions of the beta were obsolete when they were released. I know that was the case with the BC2 beta.

Finally if NVIDIA gets an official driver out on time I expect BF3 to be quite playable on release day.

Here is the problem. Dice does not have a good track record when it comes to good releases. This alone lowers my chances of getting the game at launch. Combined with what they have shown me with this demo beta the chance of me buying it is even lower.

...

Most of BC2's launch problems (and later problems) were with the in-game browser. The only part of the Beta I DIDN'T have problems with was the external browser/Origin, shockingly.

Don't get me wrong- I'm expecting a GB+ sized zero-day patch, but I'm also expecting a playable release.

What game devs always fail to realize is that it's PC gamer's wallets that fund the tech evolution that they are able to put into consoles. If we weren't upgrading every 2 years, consoles would suck that much more.

True, and the fact is that even when Blues runs stories about how Valve and EA both, in recent weeks, have gone on record stating that the PC--not the console--is their overall chief revenue driver, some people are so conditioned to thinking that "PC gaming is dead" that they ignore these public statements and continue to support their weird console biases in their posts.

It depends on the publisher and on the developer as to "which platform" is their largest revenue driver. For some it is consoles, for others it is iPhones/Android phones, and for still others it is, and always has been, the PC.

Valve (and soon EA) makes money on DRM for PCs. Bethesda spends money on DRM for PCs.

Carmack finds himself in a position where being a graphics engine genius isn't good enough anymore so he's spinning around spewing hyperbole.

Next he can complain about all the used copies of Rage for the X360/PS3 moving around.

Meanwhile the market marches on...

I can't say I completely disagree though.

Unless they manage to force feed this title like Activision does with COD, Id could be in real trouble.

Competition is fierce this year.

Heck, I can't even see Valve licensing Tech 5 since Bethesda is holding the leash now.

Interesting times.

IMO using betas as a perk for pre-orders is a mistake that ends up doing exactly what its doing now, making people feel entitled to act like whining babies. I didnt enjoy the game as it is in beta so I am not going to play until its released because this beta is already coloring my opinion.

Ding Ding Ding.

The problem is that if the situation is anything like BC2 then the "beta test" isn't the actual release candidate. They're just using willing participants to iron out things like Battlelog that can't be meaningfully tested in house.

It does have the side effect of making the game look like shit though, which from other play test vids we know isn't the case.

IMO the only worse new marketing idea than "'beta' as a bonus" is "ARG for an early release".

I got on board for ~$48.00. This one and Batman AC are the only titles that are holding my interest this season. I expect BF3 will be fine and this way I don't have to pay extra for Karkand.

Are they going to change the non-bipod accuracy of the LMGs? Are they going to add barrel overheating like real LMGs so you can't fire that entire 100-200 round belt in one go? Are they going to remove the scope option? They're already overpowered as is.

Seriously, LMGs are just hilariously overpowered in BC2. The biggest reason isn't the absurdly high accuracy (scope on a machine gun haha WTF) or super high damage (magnum ammo) it's the fact that if you single shot instead of laying on the trigger you can keep going in a frantic running-around firefight while any non LMG dudes are out of ammo.

I've gone on 5+ kill streaks for this very reason. All assault has is stupid grenade launcher spam so it's no wonder everyone goes for the class with the fully automatic sniper rifles that can also heal and rez and get a billion points for doing so.

Let me introduce you to the Trijicon ACOG:

http://www.trijicon.com/na_en/products/product2.php?id=ACOG&mid=6x48

Note the picture at the top left is one mounted on a LMG.

Like mentioned earlier, MGs and suppressive fire is what rules modern infantry battle. Snipers and rifle marksmen work in around the cover created by suppression and then go to work on the flanks.

The two things I do agree with are the need for a "heat limit" for LMGs (hey how about a quick-change barrel DICE?) and that the idea of a medic toting one is pretty dumb.

"HOWEVER", says EA, "The Bipod and Suppressive fire are always, and will remain always, completely useless due to teams of Snipers. With Sniper pin point accuracy at 50 miles out or more while running AND with their lack of tracer rounds, AS WELL as their rapid fire semi auto rifles, AND their camouflage, IN ADDITION TO their ability to call in mortars every 5 seconds, the above mentioned Bipod and Suppresive fire remain a moot point.

Thank you everyone.

Watch the project reality clip. LMG and suppresive fire could be used to disrupt camping snipers. The medic is never going to hit that sniper from that range with an LMG so instead it buzzes them.

Meh- medic/assault teams don't seem to have much difficulty overwhelming snipers in BC2. Adding suppression may even make them a weak class.

I'm more worried about lines forming in front of the tarmac for the fixed wing AC. That was my A#1 peeve about BF2. Maybe they should make them easier to crash so more people get back in the mud. Heck, I still wonít touch the pilotís seat of a helo in BC2.

Yeah, a clip- like that thing the Garand uses, only really, really long.

Just kidding.

Anyway, bipods sound cool.

Suppression sounds too contrived. The only indication you should get that you're being suppressed should be lots of bullet impacts all around and your buddy's head coming apart when he stands up.

Kudos Dice for bringing back prone!

Meh in terms of being more like a tactical shooter and less like Quake the acrobatics could be toned down a bit, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Even ARMA's wound management system is extremely simplified. Some things we just have to live with for now.

Weak gravity effects aren't one of those things.

Yep, then you'd have to layer in more recoil, ballistics and the effects of physical stress on shooting.

Then you'd be playing ARMA.

I thought BC2 came close to a good balance, my only big gripes: The idea of medics toting LMGs was a bit ridiculous. Recoil was a bit light in many instances (M60) and falling more than 8 feet should be an insta-kill.

lol, wut?

70+ lbs of gear and ammo, take an eight foot drop and land on your feet= ankles or knees busted.

So, either insta kill or insta gimp. Insta gimp would be fun.

Anyhow, hopping off of a a second floor and then breaking into a sprint with gear+ammo is kind of ridiculous.

In BC2 everything after the optics options were placeboes for people that don't want to play hard.

Any gun that stands out ends up getting nerfed anyway- it's the BF way.

I take it you missed this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PoBkp8x3bhs

There's also the fact that BF3 has 64 player multiplayer on the PC and also features tanks, jets, helos, and other vehicles.

Oh me rikey.

I also hate to admit it but EA is doing pretty good this year.

I haven't liked them ever since they screwed up Origin Systems but they seemed to have learned a few lessons since then.

Meh- distance LOD is non-existent. Plus no machine-gunning escaping tank crews? Thatís like a Reeseís with no PB.

Nice to see some mechanized battles making it back into the franchise though.

I can keep buying them with the money I save by not buying any COD titles since MW1.

They announced long ago that along with 2 weapon limit, there was no kicking.

It's in there as a finishing move- if you damage a pig just right he'll drop to his knees then you can run up and kick with the use button

It may be me but I haven't found a way to switch to fists while carrying weapons yet either.

Plays like a game from circa 2003, which isn't surprising.

Goods:

Auto-aim OFF
Actually mildly challenging on hard
Variety
Scripted sequences are short and sweet

Bads:

It's a game from 2003 that was never released with a bunch of fan mods.

@ $20.00 I'd give it an A.

Which is EXACTLY my response to it all. I've seen Disney movie trailers that were more titillating than anything I've seen in DNF so far. Still, unless immediate danger to public safety is involved (the old yelling "fire" in a crowded theater example) I will always and forever remain steadfastly against censorship of any form. Like you, I'd instead counsel good judgement, so I think we're mostly on the same page, at least conceptually. As far as DNF goes, however, while base and puerile, nothing in DNF even remotely seems over the line to me. Honestly, like Pitchford, I don't think there is a line, per se.

BAH- I never asked for authoritarian intervention against GB. Others assigned that argument to me falsely and you just regurgitated it.

I regurgitated nothing except your own words at you; I can't help it if you take general statements personally.

Notice I said: "What I do have a problem with is someone telling me...". If I meant you, I would have said "What I do have a problem with is YOU telling me...". I even went so far as to defend your right to your opinion; how you can take offense to anything what I wrote is beyond me.

Either way, my original point is that hiding behind "art" to push something vile is an overused, BS excuse and thatís weak and tired.

About as overused and tired as people pushing their moral judgments of content on others. Let's face it, society in general has it's own safeguards against content it finds too offensive and that is reached through the majority. I don't necessarily like it but the disadvantages of offensive artwork are far outweighed by the creativity and opportunities afforded to everyone else.

Na, the idea of being free to call it like you see in a non-authoritarian context it is apparently still so new most people don't even know it when they see it.

But now we're veering WAAAAAY OT so I'll let those who wish to hand wring and mutter over me to continue unabated.
