Sort of weird timing for them to be throwing this again, there's no announced anything.
Anyone think this is when Titan will finally be revealed? My money is on Battle Chess MMO or The Lost Vikings MMO.

Yeah but should we really be supporting an industry that has higher gross than the movie industry but has no unions or network of any kind to support its employees? David Fincher may stop receiving payment after he finishes Dragon Tattoo but he doesn't tell everyone who worked for him to take a long walk off a short bridge. Many of them are retained as part of his production company and come over to the next job.
Not that I disagree with you really, just food for thought. It seems like video game companies are a little more volatile in the profit margins than most industries so maybe killing the golden goose is the only way the system works. Also it seems like IT professionals are incredibly interchangeable, sadly for them. |

I can appreciate their initiative, but I think the execution was very off. I'll admit it seemed like a mod but to me it was a very impressive mod. Back in the Half life 2 days I played many single player mods and none of them were able to pull together a new combat system.
In my opinion it didn't overstay its welcome. Interested to see how they expand. That's always the most exciting part of sequels. |

This game is weird enough that the announcement fits in fine with April fools.
Fighting in the first game is like fighting in real life. After a few seconds you're too tired to do anything. |

How do people find time to play multiplayer games anymore? I sunk many hours into TFC back in the day but now only one game gets to be on deck and it gets maybe a few hours a week.
I have to stay away from all these multi experiences like Chivalry and NS2 because I know I won't get around to it if there is no single player. |

Enjoying HOTS but the update was pretty formal. Still see the same units, with the very notable exception of the terran spider mine.
I do like what they've added though. You still earn some points for your account on losses and the unranked means I can finally fuck around with Terran without pushing through the custom game format.
Still I wish it had been Frozen Throne level. 2 new units for each of 4 races, a crapload of new heroes and the shop and mercenaries mechanic. That was like a new game in mp. |

If they added dynamic focus like in that gattling gun screenshot they'd get a lot of juice out of the current gen graphics. Otherwise this looks like current console gen.
Excited to see what you can do, hope we're back to sandbox this time. Probably still have to wait a few GTAs before I can do what I really want, which is level the buildings in the city.

I guess I'm slow?
Haven't beat Bastion yet (singer), 6 hours in.
Deus Ex- One run through 25 hours. I probably read every email in that game though. Also was working on my slam dunk for a half hour at least.
It takes me at least 60 hours minimum to beat a Bethesda/Obsidian game.
Sometimes I think games are too long...maybe thats a function of free time remaining. I was playing through the Baconing awhile ago and man it would not end. |

I wouldn't discount the millions of people in the US who are just going to re-up on Xbox without bothering to look at the changes.
For me, a console represents speed and ease of use. I don't have to worry about an internet connection or drivers. My PC is great and I do enjoy gaming on it but I have an issue I have to work through for every 1 out of 2 games I play. Make the console more complex and you introduce these issues and make me wonder why to bother having two machines that do the same thing.
For me this generation has been sort of straddling that line. On the PS3, you probably need 1-2 hours before you can play an updated copy of MGS4 if you bought a disc. But for most games you can ignore the update forever if you like and the installs are often optional or quick. Also the account restrictions were very simple. Once you download a game to the Ps3, it doesn't call home. I can play the same downloaded game on different user accounts with different network credentials no problem. Can't imagine this will last.
There's been a big focus on UI in tech development these past few years so hopefully they'll keep things simple, but I doubt it.

| Glad a big company is bringing its heft in to figure out some of the UI issues. Seems like theres a lot of ways to go about this but its only going to take off if someone can find a "natural" mode of play rather than a "cool" additive. |

Gold level zerg here, hope there's still some room to white knight blizzard!
SC2 MP is like any competitive scene. Its not really for casual people. Take Street Fighter. Its fun to bum around with your friends, but if you go online at the low levels Zangief will lariat you 10,000 times and at the high levels you'll trade 1 hit for eating a 1/3 life combo. Not a lot of fun if you're not interested in defining your weaknesses and working on improving. Any competitive 1v1 game is like this. People want to win.
In SC2, on the lower levels, cheese is how you win. 6 pool, or bunker rush, or gateway rush and just pump units into their base. However, this rarely works once you get a little better. Once I started scouting 6 pools and got good enough to react to them, I stopped losing to them. And you know what happens when you defend yourself from that first rush? 9/10 times the opponent immediately quits because they've screwed themselves economically and they know it. Its like Zangief's lariat. It only works on you because you don't know enough about the game, its not that the lariat is the best move in the game.
However I completely understand if you don't want to commit 100 hours to get good at it. Thats what keeps me away from MOBAs. |

Cutter wrote on Mar 11, 2013, 13:30: I don't know if it's art, but I know what I like. Pretty good call back to the obscenity Supreme Court ruling, it really fits here.
Art is complicated, which pretty much means that no one knows what it is. Its a know it when I see it thing which means you don't know it, not really. You can say it requires imagination or creativity but all you're really doing is setting up a post for "good art". But sometimes people move rocks and call it art. http://www.lacma.org/art/exhibition/levitated-mass Really art is just something deliberate.
The real question that people seem to be debating is, are video games good art? Can you appreciate them beyond the fact that they're fun to play? Certainly. I was playing Bastion last night and it seems to qualify. Are they great art, do they evoke philosophical discussions and soul searching? In my opinion, not quite yet, certainly not on the level of film yet.

Played it on hard, I liked it.
I think it sold in the 3-4 million range. Probably recouped their marketing budget at least.
I thought the gameplay was fun but it was sort of one note. For me, the cutscenes are what sold it. His constant yammering and the wierd grandpa is drunk flashes of text were very amusing to me and broke up the hours of shooting from cover very well.
Also on hard shoot dodge almost never worked because it took so long to get up if anyone was left alive they would nail you. I spent most of my time ducking behind cover and popping out for a slow mo headshot then snapping right back in. Especially later in the game.
Highlights - Slow mo hostage taker murder, melee range attacking for the first time, flavella chaos, that part in the airport where the song comes on |

Probably one of the few cases of effective live action spliced into games.
Disc 2 worked as an audio CD in any CD player so you could listen to the entire soundtrack, which was pretty good. Team Fat! |

There are two games of note currently not on the pirate bay. D3 and this. I don't think a petition is going to change anything.
No doubt they're going to ride it out. |

Also just finished a playthrough recently. Very fun game.
Regarding Stealth- I've seen this complaint before, that a game that gave you "real choice" would not reward stealth like DR does with XP and easiness. That argument fails to take into account the whole picture. Sure its easier to survive a stealthier entry if you do it correctly, since you pretty much just have to hit q, but you pay in time and patience.
I sort of did a hybrid approach (knowing that I probably wouldn't get to a second playthrough for awhile) where I would sneak around til someone found me and then blast the survivors. Well when the guns came out, I dropped everyone on the level in a matter of minutes. They all run to where you are, there is no respawning enemies, and if you're armed for it the cover system makes you very strong. Too many? Grenades. Hell if you walk away for 30 seconds they forget where you are and you can start over with headshots. You definitely have to be more careful with the shooting but it drastically cuts down on the time you spend in a level.
Regarding Missing Link- It was weird that it didn't integrate. I think its pretty obvious it was an after thought, as there's 0 callback to it in the game proper.
That being said they did a great job with it. Interesting setting, touches on the best parts of DX with the prisoner exploitation, ties into the main game lore wise very well, and it was super cool to see the "components" in the final boss of the main game.
Edit- Oh yeah and the Ending- Well we all know the ending is Deus Ex 1, so they sort of are painted into a corner here. That being said, the approach they took was kind of lazy. If you haven't beaten it yet, time to tamper those expectations down. However everything up to that last second button press is excellent.

You will be convinced video games cause violence if the first thing you hear about video games and violence is someone on tv speaking against them with a little bit of authority. Likewise if you are part of the club you will never be convinced, just like the NRA.
The studies lean towards no but its not exhaustive. |

Although I disagree with Cutter on Skyfall (Bond has come a long way but its still just an action movie), he's right about the politics.
The Academy is made up of thousands of people who produce and work on all the movies that are voted on. Add to that the massive amounts of money people like Weinstein throw around to support their favorite picture during the awards show run up and you have a fully functional government and lobbyists.
So this year they played it safe, everyone got a nod in their "place". Haneke made a great film and he's foreign so that's a slam dunk. Quentin is obviously writing. Lincoln was the Day Lewis show, here you go best actor. Argo was on a winning streak so they let it take best picture. Same with Hathaway, she gets to represent Miserables.
Okay, what do we have left? Well Ang already has a best picture so we'll just give him director this year. SLP needs something...um how about best actress why not? Of course its not as deliberate as that but that's the mass action effect.
Really the only pictures that didn't get much love were Beasts of the Southern Wild, a first try from everyone involved, and Zero Dark Thirty which was good but IMO not as remarkable as the others.
Actually all the movies in the spotlight this year were pretty great. Last year was awful. If ever there was a year to spread the love around, this was it. (I missed SLP and Beasts). |
