amd has made such disastrous decisions in the last year alone that i'm afraid their demise isn't even a matter of "if", it's just a matter of time; in particular, everything related to their attempts to fab their own chips, and now their decision to spin out fabrication to a startup company and try to sell off their inhouse fabrication facilities.

i bought an alienware pc in 2001. it was without a doubt the worst investment i've ever made, assembly line shit with nothing but problems. a friend of mine bought one around the same time and had a similar experience but got lucky by just demanding an rma code so he could send it back and get it refunded and having a pliable supervisor agree to make some free upgrades and insure the system, you know, fucking worked.

also, that moron's incoherent drivel in that interview isn't going to talk anyone out of accepting the pc's irrelevance.

i've come to terms with the pc's irrelevance. i don't think gaming on the pc will ever really die, but it can certainly become even more obscure than it already is, and it will. until publishers get wise and stop trying to rape their customer base. widespread adoption of an effective and unobtrusive drm scheme like steam would be an excellent start.

if that doesn't happen, well.. in five years i'm sure pc gaming will still be here, but i think it's going to be dominated by whatever ports the console industry deigns to throw it, mmo's (if console developers havn't gotten wise and produced some themselves, by then), the eclectic shit coming out of eastern europe (often awesome, see stalker. russians can't afford fucking xboxes.) and indie games. and valve. god bless those wacky sons of bitches. steam may yet save pc gaming.

The problem isn't that I'm a pirate. The problem is that you keep using that fact as if it somehow devalues my arguments. If I said the sky was blue, you'd say something completely inane and irrelevant like "The sky would be bluer if you didn't steal everything." My pirating habits have absolutely nothing to do with Microsoft being detrimental to PC gaming.

it doesn't invalidate your arguments but, rational or not, it does devalue them. what credence is to be given to someone whining about the death of pc gaming when that one is actively driving a stake in it's heart? it's hypocritical in the extreme.

i myself am guilty of piracy, but only recently, and only of games using the oppressive limited activation/securom scheme. i still feel weird about pirating shit having never done so since i first got into gaming but publishers who want to rape me with rentware can go fuck themselves.

News Comments > Newell on Piracy, Pricing, TF2 Comics, and More
20. Re: Newell on Piracy, TF2 Comics, and More Feb 19, 2009, 06:23 Nucas
i don't buy games on steam at all, really, unless it's some incidental title on a weekend deal. steam is one of the most expensive places i know of to buy a game, and the prices stay high for longer periods than anywhere else i would considering purchasing from, like gogamer or amazon. cute rhetoric, though.

he is right about piracy, however. i havn't bought an EA game since they started the securom online activation and limited installs bullshit, or any other that employs the same scheme. i've been a lifetime gamer/borderline collector, and for literally the first time in my life, i will eschew holding a boxed copy in my hand for a pirated distro.

why the fuck would i pay 50 dollars for rentware i can only install three times? what happens when the authentication servers go down? being a collector of actual boxed releases is obsolete when the pirated versions are the only ones i'll be able to play five years from now. most recently i'm forced to regret that DICE won't get any money from me for the innovative mirror's edge, but they can thank their publisher for that.

i speculate this is the latest attempt by publishers to put a stake in the heart of used game sales. more than any other industry, game publishers are the most unrealistically entitled bratty, whiny babies. well done sacrificing actual real world sales, in the present, for theoretical future sales that do not concern you in the first place. fucks.

take two's leadership has demonstrated they're just a bunch of bastards, but i'd rather not see what would happen to the gta4 license if it went to ea.
and while irrelevent to me, it'd also give free reign to ea to make even crappier sports games. isn't take two their only real competitor for licensed sports crap?

gothic 3's failing was being too ambitious while being saddled with a publisher that demanded it be shipped in an obviously flawed state. i'd say it wasn't pirahna bytes' fault, but they should have known better.

i still hold the series in the highest esteem as rpgs go, on the weight of the first two alone. the third was decent, but lacking in.. well, just lacking.

i can accept a one time online verification of a cd key to "activate" it, i suppose, even if i value the notion of self-sufficiency in my software. this is the price of advancement.

but limiting the number of times i can re-install it can kiss my ass. bioshock did this and so did two worlds, which is why i have keygens and authentication killers for both of them.

the fact that i have to resort to the scene to future proof my legitimately purchased shit pisses me off like nothing else. if i'm going to be treated like a criminal, and have to resort to criminal shit, why don't i just go all the way and download the game with cracks installed? it's less of a fucking headache for me.

i find i'm increasingly of this mindset, and i havn't pirated a game in like 12 years.
