Demo for a RIDE |

Heh, it didn't fully sink in until I ran the thing. This is literally a demo for an amusement park rollercoaster ride. Like in physical reality. Real life. Targeted at people who might request one be built for them. And/or people who might want to seek one out and go for a ride. How strange!
Ya, it's also a plug for NoLimits...

Was the first Ghost Recon really that good? It came bundled w/ a recent graphics card purchase and I was thinking of trying it sometime. I liked FPS games with depth such as Deus Ex, Thief, System Shock 2, and even Operation Flashpoint... But if it's too much about commanding a squad and planning out the missions, forget it. I guess I should check out some reviews.

Y'know, you can answer questions like that with Google...
SELL LIKE HOT CAKES - "Hot cakes cooked in bear grease or pork lard were popular from earliest times in American. First made of cornmeal, the griddle cakes or pancakes were of course best when served piping hot and were often sold at church benefits, fairs, and other functions. So popular were they that by the beginning of the 19th century 'to sell like hot cakes' was a familiar expression for anything that sold very quickly effortlessly, and in quantity." From "Encyclopedia of Word and Phrase Origins" by Robert Hendrickson (Facts on File, New York, 1997)

Succubus: 1. A female demon supposed to descend upon and have sexual intercourse with a man while he sleeps. 2. An evil spirit; a demon.
They're usually naked and have little red wings and a tail.

Re: Carmack isnt the lead |

Since he is doing the same things he was when he was 'just' lead programmer, and in may companies the sole title of the person with his job is lead programmer, what exactly is the importance of this distinction? Robert Duffy is listed in the official credits as "lead programmer". The distinction is rendering technology versus all of the other work that goes into a game engine. Which is a huge amount.

The grenades are far from worthless. True, they don't bounce well, but if you throw them directly at something, they explode on contact ... this is a great way of quickly taking out things that are out of reach of the shotgun without exposing yourself for the time it would take to get the job done with another weapon. For example, when you first run into revenants... they're typically up somewhere you can't even get to, but your grenades can get to them. The grenades are also good for those really strong chaingun guys.
Also, the grenades are just plain fun. If you use em on relatively weak guys, you can make them go flying way up and bounce off the ceiling. And every now and then there's a cluster of guys together with enough space between you and them to lob a grenade into one of em and take out the whole bunch.
If you can't find a use for grenades, try to get a little more creative with your strategy! Or, not use them, but you'll be missing out.

Carmack (or someone else from id) stated that to get beyond 4 player MP you'd want a LAN connection. So I can see a 4 player session being unplayable over a 256k connection. Would have to sniff the connection to see though. Ok, I just did a little 4 player multi. Only took like 20 tries to find a server that wasn't full or password protected. Finally got into one and played for a few minutes. Exited, checked DUMeter graph, results:
mostly around 5.3KB/sec (42kbps) fairly regular spikes around 11KB/sec (88kbps)
These are hardly conclusive results, but they reflect real-world behavior at least, and are in line with my own personal expectations...

Sixis, 256kbps DSL should be PLENTY to play DOOM 3 multiplayer! I can't believe id's netcode would be so crappy as to require more than that for a 4 player game... Back in Quake 1 we had 16 player games no problem on dialup. Bandwidth requirements for FPS games have gone up since then, but not by a factor of 10. Latency is what's really important.

Radeon 9800 Pro, Catalyst 4.7 drivers, outdoor areas look perfect.
And the shadows are VERY GOOD, in my opinion. Way beyond any other game without a doubt. What were you expecting? Perfection? Carmack, as talented and hard-working as he is, is still only human. As are the people who make the hardware this is running on.

Bah, don't listen to all these naysayers. The way they did the flashlight is FUN. It definitely would've been worse if you could tape the flashlight to your gun or mount it to a helmet. The use of the flashlight would become pointless, instead of having it be an integral part of the experience. And this is a GAME, not a simulation, so enough with the duct tape crap.

I just did some timedemo tests with Cat4.7 OpenGL driver versus this one on my 9800 Pro (128MB) and there was absolutely no difference in framerate. Oh well.
