47. C# Feb 1, 2002, 22:19 theAntiELVIS

C# is not "MS Java". C# was designed by the same architect who designed Borland's Delphi and C++ Builder products.

We're talking a RAD IDE, full component model, extensibility, and, yes, cross-platform. I've seen it. It is a solid piece of work - surprising considering it's Microsoft.

But beyond that, it will have full .net integration. I've also seen .net, and it is a superb system. Again, surprising considering the source.

These products are not evolutionary - they are revolutionary. This is the first true threat to C++. Compared to that, the threat to Java is trivia.

C# is the language that will drive .net. I recently saw a presentation on this, and .net is the future. Some may not like it, but it's just how it is.

C# will be cross-platform, as .net will. Both will be usable under Linux, plus other platforms.

Java was designed to run toasters and microwave ovens - it is hardly a robust programming environment.

Please send me a kitten - I haven't had cat meat for years. Yumm!

15. Let's sum up here Jan 27, 2002, 16:46 theAntiELVIS

Blue should write a book about his experiences in gaming, and detail the evolution of things from a cottage industry to the multi-billion dollar juggernaut it has become.

Java is shit. C# will kill it. Learn C#.

Stories about a cat would be fine - if they're stories about the dog eating one. Cats. like Java, are shit.

5. They'll push the envelope Jan 27, 2002, 00:41 theAntiELVIS

And make a game that has only one hour of gameplay this time.

Someday Gearbox will make a game that you can play in no time at all - it will be about going and buying a game and bringing it home. As soon as you put the CD in the drive, you win and the game is over.

According to Einstein, space is curved, so eventually that trash will come back around in front of the ship, and it's easier to dodge if it's smaller.

It's physics.

14. The "Cody" of gaming Jan 27, 2002, 00:35 theAntiELVIS

At the risk of being associated with a moron like Frederickson (if that is his real name), I must say the thing with the dog is getting to be a bit like Kathy Lee Gifford going on about her kids on TV.
Dogs are cute. That's why we like them. But Hudson is no cuter than any other dog. What I'd really like to see in OOTB is Blue's opinion about stuff, like the Medal of Honor box-thing, or Netscape suing Microsoft (again).
Dogs I know from already.

The best cartoon ever made was, is, and shall remain "Jonny Quest".

To think anything else is simply foolish.

And I don't mean the politically correct JQ from the 90s - I mean the original 1960s/70s JQ. One can still speculate about the possibility of a sexual relationship between Dr. Quest and Race Bannon.

In fact, the dog was probably the only one who wasn't getting any.

7. No, not really Jan 7, 2002, 20:14 theAntiELVIS

The Duke Nukem boys have to finish putting the thread on evey screw and bolt in the game, not to mention they STILL haven't perfected the player's ability to zip and unzip their pants.

Over at Valve they are far too busy finishing "Half-Life: The Last Nickel in Your Pocket Edition" to concentrate on anything new.

Meanwhile, play RTCW. It's actually out.

2. Baby weight Jan 6, 2002, 11:29 theAntiELVIS

Easy one. Infant mortality rates used to be much higher than they are now. Fat babies tend to be full-term and healthy. Skinny babies were often premature and/or unhealthy and might not survive.

One of those hold-overs from before the industrial revolution, which led to the medical advances that led to incubators, pre-natal care, and whatnot.

And congratulation to Uncle Frans and the whole family!

21. Hacked and Floating City Jan 4, 2002, 20:00 theAntiELVIS

I'm glad the technical voice of reason came out on the "Hacked" thing - it would have been scary if I saw someone elses's drive there.

The floating city has to be a scam. All the images and models portray it as a rigid-hull craft. No rigid hull that long could resist the shear forces exerted by the movement of the water supporting it - it would break into sections.

If the thing was more of a square it might work, but then you'd have to use tugs to move it.

The idea that a 100-foot wave would "only move it an inch" is ludicrous. If the hull is flat-bottomed, it would capsize.

But I downloaded the nifty Popular Mechanics illustration - makes great wallpaper.

They are the clones the title refers to. In the movie they have to seek-out the wisdom of their elders by finding all the ex-members of Menudo.

Imagine actually finding characters more annoying than Jar-jar Binks.

News Comments > On Nazis in Games
10. Pay no attention Jan 3, 2002, 15:23 theAntiELVIS

Anyone who claims there are Nazis in RTCW know nothing about the subject.

As others have pointed-out, there was a big difference between being a Nazi and being a German soldier.

Just another hack writer looking to create controversy where none exists.

Although I still think all the swastikas was a big mistake. Perhaps historically accurate, but PR-wise a bad move. You'll notice they DON'T appear in the multiplayer maps.
