Is it really apocalyptic, or is it going to be another letdown like the Cold War was?

Hell yeah - I'll never forget picking up the cardboard-sleeve shareware edition of Quake, going through the registration process, and then immediately going online (first time I had ever played online). There were something like five servers, and nine other players. And at 1200 baud it ran great! I remember having no idea how to chat, so people would just talk to me like I was their simple cousin.

A very nice player gave me some lessons - just one-on-one for an hour or so - and I thought "Whoa, this is pretty cool". Nowadays when you're new to a game all you get is "Go learn to play, shithead!"

There definitely was, for a short period of time, a close-knit, everyone's-your-pal feel to things. By the time things like Threewave and other mods were out, and the servers were in the hundreds and the players in the thousands, that was gone. When Quake 2 came out it was long dead. No way to get that kind of thing back - we were like the first people to use the wheel: "Sure, Og, I'll show you how to make one!" Then, by the time people were making wagons they would only sell them to you.

Blue - I think you have discovered a theme for a whole new site here: Games for Cheap Bastards. This section is definitely growing.

If you have five dollars, and Chuck Norris has five dollars, that means Chuck Norris just took YOUR five dollars.

Nope - it means very shortly Chuck Norris will have ten dollars.

3. It Ain't Easy Printing Green Aug 28, 2009, 10:25 theAntiELVIS

Totally unrelated to anything in OOTB, but has anyone else seen the new RITI "green" printer? It uses coffee grounds and/or tea dregs instead of ink (no, I'm not kidding) and is operated by moving the "ink" tank back-and-forth, one sheet at a time (swear to God, not kidding). Google it - it's insane. I guess it would be useful for those times when you just have to print something while camping.

UPDATE: Further investigation indicates this isn't an actual product that's on the market - yet. It was an entry in a design contest.

News Comments > EA: Marketing = 66-75% of a Game's Budget
5. Re: EA: Marketing = 66-75% of a Game's Budget Aug 27, 2009, 17:20 theAntiELVIS

Yeah - maybe if they did this the other way around they would make better product that markets itself.

As to appealing to a different market, this change might also make their product appealing to people who like quality games.

Makes you wonder how the smaller publishers manage to be successful - perhaps by being less "corporate" and more "studio" oriented?

Of course, one should never take EA as a representative example - any more than Nazi Germany was representative of Europe in the 1930s.

I pleases me to no end that there are people who do this kind of thing....so I can point at them and laugh semi-hysterically. It's really nice that the gene pool provides this kind of entertainment on an almost daily basis.

while the team behind the game's multiplayer support has already been laid off,

Reminds me of when one of my programming contracts was cancelled - on December 31, 2000. Did I get calls. Oh, yes, there were calls. So I triple charged them to take a look, and found that no one had thought to Y2k-proof the database. Easiest money I ever made....

Today is the 40th anniversary of the belated close of the Woodstock Music & Art Fair

And God help us, we're still hearing about it. A bunch of hippies roll around in the mud, and a legend is born. A legend that never dies - unfortunately.

No - real intelligence is revealed by passing the paternity test: if it can knock-up another computer, yet still avoid child support payments - then it's comparable to a man.

I'm watching this, and it keeps reminding me of something. Then the bit with the flying guys comes on, and I have it: The gameplay here really reminds me of Quake 2. The pace, the heavy strafing tactics, even some of the bad guys.

But it really does look like a console game - hopefully that will get a makeover for the PC version. It has that "you are floating two feet above the ground and moving is completely effortless" look to it. Which console games must have due to the unbearably crappy controllers.

Yep - marketing research pays-off. I'd buy just a DVD in a paper sleeve if it made the price something reasonable.

I'm ass-deep in crows here in N. CA. You shouldn't feed them - that just leads to there being more crows. A particularly vile and worthless bird, IMO. We also have vultures here - I like them, they perform a service - like eating all those dead crows that strangely seem to accumulate around my house.
