30. "Hypochondriacs have real disease" Jun 13, 2004, 20:14 theAntiELVIS

...and now doctors have real income from "treating" it.

This is what comes of curing real diseases - the need to scare-up new sources of revenue. And what a gold mine this must be - who would be easier to convince they have it besides a hypochondriac?

49. Then pay us back Jun 10, 2004, 23:17 theAntiELVIS

"Everyone here at Valve is once again reminded of how much we owe to the gaming community"

I think they owe me about $200.00 for all the various versions of Half-Life I've bought. So the least they could do is give the new one away for free.

At least I was never stupid enough to pay for Counter-Strike, when I could just download it free and legally.

I'll never forgive these guys for making WorldCraft in-house and taking it away from the people who supported it in the first place. Gabe got that fat by sucking the life out of the amateur mod community.

50. What's Left To Do Jun 7, 2004, 14:18 theAntiELVIS

The game is actually nearly finished. The only thing left is to perfect the mind control functionality. This presents subliminal messages to the player that accomplish several company goals. First, it makes you think you haven't actually played the game, and so you go out and buy it again - they are shooting for at least six copies per customer. Then, it makes you want to vote for George B. for President (as if already having had two George B.s wasn't plenty). And third, it projects the idea "Cliffy B. Is Not Gay" into your mind. This is the part they are having trouble with, since it appears to be impossible to get people to believe Cliffy B. is not gay.

He sure went a long way to avoid saying "Microsoft gave us a buttload of money to have co-op only on the XBox".

I don't know if there is any multiplayer aspect to the PC version, but if there is someone will mod it....

8. Out of Crap come Opportunity May 9, 2004, 19:46 theAntiELVIS

About thirty years ago book authors started doing something that had previously been unthinkable: actually making money from self-published titles. No, they didn't often make the mega-bucks that a mainstream best seller would, but they made enough.

With the rise of the megalithic game publishers like Vivendi and EA, the same mistakes the book publishers made (and the movie studios made) are being made within the game market.

Now, indie books and movies aren't just succeeding, they are succeeding in a Big Way. Generally by offering substance over glitz.

The era of independently developed, self-published games is on the horizon. Small teams will create less-than bleeding edge titles that have the very thing the mega-publishers fear: risky innovative content. Two things have to happen for this to succeed. First, everybody needs a broadband connection. We're getting there. Second, the idea that a game must come in a box and on a CD must pass by the wayside.

Retailers are already missing a bet because of the "in a box" mentality. If they just put one display box on the shelf, and then when you bought the game they handed you a CD in a paper sleeve, they could get more boxes on the same number of shelves. That translates into more published titles and more choices for the consumer. Just the savings on shipping the things would make the publishers/distributors more money.

But self-publishing via the Internet is the future for innovative, risk-taking, creative developers. Cut the fat-cats out of the picture. Get the community involved in the beta test cycle. Get the community involved in the "self-support" paradigm. Sell the game for twenty bucks.

It IS coming. It WILL work. All it takes is more bonehead moves like this one from Vivendi, and a few creative and visionary developers to lead the way.

id started with shareware. The next id will start with self-publishing.

The first version was like a software lava lamp. One of the most boring bits of software ever produced. About the only fun part was going around curves too fast and piling-up the train.

The game industry has become like the music industry. It is now completely controlled by a handful of publishers who refuse to take any risks. If a new game isn't just like some old game that made a lot of money, it goes nowhere - no one will publish it. And without a publisher your game doesn't go into a box.

The last holdout of the "old-school" entrepreneur developer is in small, Internet-distributed games in the strategy genre - and even those are all clones of things that went before.

It's all been taken over by bean counters and marketing hacks who wouldn't know a good idea if it bit them on the ass. And even if they could recognize something new and innovative, they wouldn't take the risk on it - everthing has to be a hit now.

Look at Sid Meir - this guy was Mr. Innovation back when he was good. Now even he just churns-out clones of his old work. To say nothing of the "do-it-again" crap factory id has become....

Japan has taken the lead in coolness and innovation - and those games aren't published in the U.S. because this market is seen as a wasteland of non-demanding consumers happy to play the same crap over and over again - like eating Big Macs: sure it's crap, but it is consistently the same crap every time, so there are no risks and no surprises.

1. G4 + Tech Mar 26, 2004, 17:36 theAntiELVIS

This brings to mind a few questions:

Will G4 stop being 18 hrs a day of unrelenting crap?

Will we be seeing more or less of Tommy Tallarico, the most annoying person on Earth?

Will both channels stop being what is essentially one game commercial after another - or will the new combined channel be renamed "Game Industry Shill-O-Rama" - which would be somewhat reflective of their content?

Will Blue get his own show?

Are these mice single? Is there somewhere I can get in touch with them?

This could be the solution to the high divorce rate - if they can grow other parts of human female anatomy on them.

Is there somewhere I can contribute money to this research?
