Humanism is an ideology of course, and as I explained to you it is an opposite of feminism. Feminism wants to better the situation for women. Humanism wants to better it for EVERYONE. Something that only betters the world for 1 and subjugates another can never be humanist. And this where people nowadays draw the comparison with 3rd gen feminism (And why I said that humanists might accept feminism before the 3rd gen type). Feminism before that wanted to equalize rights and allow for the same things with women as they are for men. 1st and 2nd gen feminists wanted porn for women, wanted books written by women and wanted movies made by women, they wanted to make men and women EQUAL in society, 3rd gen feminism wants to put women above males. By dictating how males write, how males make movies, and how far males can go in their art.

If you do not understand how that makes 3rd gen feminism something unacceptable to me then I can't help you. To me, 3rd gen feminism is akin to a form of censorship. And I will never accept censorship.

I have a mother, a wife, and now a daughter. I know the extreme amounts of abuse and violence that women face all over the globe (John Lennon said it best: "Women are the ni**ers of the world."). I've personally known several girls who were raped, one was gang-raped by some boys I knew. This stuff isn't just a "theory" to me.
I'd never heard of third wave feminism until this whole GG thing started up. I looked it up on wikipedia and it sounds more like "Identity politics" than feminism to me (I'm not going to get into the whole Identity Politics stuff--but I'm very strongly against it.)
This is the first line for the wiki entry ... (highlight mine)

"Third-wave feminism is a term identified with several diverse strains of feminist activity and study, whose exact boundaries in the history of feminism are a subject of debate ... "

In other words, feminism isn't a monolith--there are multiple diverse strains of feminist thought. But the core--that women should have the same rights as men, that they should not be subject to misogyny, abuse, etc--remain the same. From the little I've read about "third wave feminism," it doesn't sound like something that would appeal to me (again it sounds identical to "Identity Politics") ... but I also think the whole "third wave" label is being used as an excuse by a lot of people to dismiss ALL of feminism.

And even though I can see reasons to dislike "third wave feminism," can someone--anyone--please tell me how they have been hurt by it? Can you tell me what form of power it holds over you and your life?

My guess is an honest answer would be: "Not at all," and "nothing."

So why all the hysteria?

(By the way--I said an "honest" answer. MRA types like Julio will come up with all sorts of bullshit examples, but that's how it is when you see yourself as a perpetual victim.)

I dont see anynone here disagreeing with you on this point. I also don't see how Sarkesian fits in. Calling out gamers as bigots and haters, calling them sexist and generally putting a label on gamers and gaming culture, (or any other group for that matter) thats not feminism. Thats fascism.

It's early days yet. Give it time. Once Windows starts closing its ecosystem and if this crossplatform API turns out to be the shit, Linux desktops are finally going to be catching on.

Well if RPGs keep heading in the direction of Bioware: Inquisition and its ilk, then this is a no brainer first day buy. We will see though, who knows maybe Bethesda surprises us with another great single player RPG.

Heh heh.

Gator has become the pejorative for GamerGaters, i.e. "Gator" instead of "Gater."

But ... you probably knew that already.

I see your gater and raise you a crocodile! How do you like 'dem apples, mental boy?

AAhhhh there it is. I was wondering when this was coming, since SteamOS (or any other Linux variant) can't possibly compete with Windows without a platform independent graphics API to rival DirectX. Still I wonder what it will take to convince developers to program games with an alternative API (and hardware manfacturers to support it)? We all know what happened with OpenGL, most developers left it in the dust. It was simpy not cost effective to develop for two APIs. Will definitely be following this with interest.

Im not disagreeing with you. The hypocrisy is layered, but the gist of it is that men and women are not equals in terms of either physical or (certain) mental abilites. The second part is disputed and rightly so because there is no empirical data, because of cultural taboos and imperatives no research is being pursued to verify that, and obviously any active direct competition which might proove or disproove the point is discouraged or even outright frowned upon. Hence the male/female seperation in all things of a competitive nature.

Call me a sexist bigot or whatever, but before you do that note that Im not stating that men are superiour in any way to women. The hypocrisy lies in the liberal trumpeting of equality in everything, while everyone turns a blind eye to the fact that there are obvious large physical and probably (equaly large) siginificant mental differences between the genders.

You make it sound like that's an easy thing done in no time. They are probably working outsourcing on a new Homeworld game behind the scenes and these are just released to help build interest in that direction while helping offset the cost of the IP. Rebuilding Cataclysm without the source code wouldn't be a picnic either.

Fixed that for you.

What? My comment obviously applies to this case as well. Either we let women compete with men in non-physical sports or we admit our hypocrisy!

Savage Chickens Comic Strip.

They made that movie last year. It's called "Edge of Tomorrow." And it was pretty freakin' awesome.

I enjoyed it but I can't help thinking that it would've been better off as an R movie.

You mean like almost every action movie?

The hollywood and video game drive to get things to "PG-13" is ruining good content.

Yeah, all the best content for adults is on TV nowadays. That being said, Under the Skin was awesome, and it also happened to be rated R.

I watched Under the Skin with my girlfriend a couple of weeks ago. I though it was really awesome, she hated it. It's definitely not for everyone.

I'm not incredibly fond of the entire idea of e-sports in the first place, but if there's any one thing that stands out about the potential it has it's that short of an outright disability nobody has an unfair advantage over another based on any physical criteria.

Unless pros these days have learned to whack the spacebar with their penis in tournaments or something for an APM advantage, I guess I don't follow it closely enough to know.

Posts like these would make sense if there wasn't two separate tournaments.

I think many organizers, especially just a few years ago, wouldn't allow trans gamers on the team at all. But they are allowing it now and unfortunately have put restrictions on it to prevent abuse. It sounds ridiculous but maybe they've already encountered side switching not done in good faith (for lack of a better phrase). Obviously the solution is to just do away with the separate tournaments or if there's opposition to that make a third co-ed tournament.

EDIT: You know what, the "gay" part of this rule is really weird. I was initially not comprehending that I guess. I hope that's a translation error.

Why the fuck are there 2 tournaments anyway? I dont see how being female, male, transgender gay, straight, shit-faced, etc. makes a difference in a fucking E-sport!

Everytime I read a statement from Gearbox I feel dirty and used, and need to take a shower at the earliest opportunity. How come these guys always come accross like the biggest douchebags ever. I have an image in my mind of Randy Pitchford as Mr. Burns, wringing his hands while staring into the distance and fantasizing about giant bags of money.

Wow thats optimistic! Not sure how the 1% will feel about that. You know, the guys who will own 75% of the world's wealth by that time as well as 100% of the world's robots (Including the armed ones)

I'm torn on this kind of thing.

On the one hand, I completely back the ability for developers to limit modifications to the multiplayer aspects of their games. I value the ability to set hard limits on cheating.

On the other hand, I like mods, and I'm generally against DMCA takedowns over this kind of thing.

Ah well.

I dont follow Zombie games (not since L4D) and have no idea what Dying Light is. Is it a multiplayer game? (And if it is, does it feature dedicated servers? If it does, the admins alone could determine what mods are allowed)

Well apart from the grisly backstory, the gameplay looks decent. The engine itself seems fairly advanced, and the gameplay reminds me a lot of Syndicate. Holy shit, now that would be something, a Syndicate remake with these graphics!

... and really cutter? With out a doubt Bill was one sleazy mofo when he was building Microsoft... but these days he's spent billions and billions of his own cash helping the little people, in fact that's pretty much ALL he does now.

As one of 88 people that now own over half the world's total wealth he and his cronies can do more, a lot more. So yeah, really. If I had my way they wouldn't even have a choice. No one should own that much. No one.

Your statistic is incorrect. They doesn't own half the world's total wealth, they own the same total wealth as half the world.

In other words, 80 people hold as much wealth as 3.6 billion people. But that isn't half the world's total wealth.

I guess that makes it all good then. Rolleyes
