The media coverage of gamergate, and the narrative being pushed against gaming and gamers in general proves a lot of points I personally have believed for a long time.

The lack of female gamers over the years (until recently) had everything to do with social acceptance and nothing to do with gaming being some kind of boys only club.

Who was chasing girls off of the Super Nintendo? Who harassed a girl off of a Sega Genesis? What anonymous death threats were being slung against girls playing Playstation or Xbox 1?

Up until recently, gaming was NOT socially acceptable. Being a gamer as your chief hobby was looked at as geeky, nerdy, or dorky, all things that have all been negative descriptors. Dorky or nerdy chic only came into popularity in the recent years as the world had to accept that techy type people were the movers and shakers these days. The hipster movement on nerdy outfits helped make nerdy a socially acceptable group.

As it became more socially acceptable, women became more comfortable participating in it. How many girls wanted to join video game clubs in high schools in the 90s or the early 00s? It just did not exist on any kind of comparable level, and the internet and accessibility to communicate was not nearly as established or common then, so you cannot seriously blame it on harassment. No one at an EB games ever stopped a parent from buying a game console because it was for a daughter and not a son. I'm confident in saying that has absolutely NEVER happened.

Now, the media, spearheaded by hipster online media and marketing types, has worked their asses off to make sure gaming is no longer socially acceptable. Instead of isolating the type of lunatics who would send ANYONE a death threat, they just label it as gamers, and they celebrate their friends jumping in on making sweeping generalizations.

then these people, who want to be celebrated and respected as members of the gaming industry, they join in on this, and when people respond to their negativity with equal negativity, it is labeled harassment.

This is all so dishonest, and it sickens me. The threats sicken me. The shit talking sickens me. The lies sicken me. The entire situation is a mess but the media will only focus on one side of the mess and it will not make a better community or society moving forward.

If we don't acknowledge this bullshit as a whole, we will not grow from it. It will just be someone else who is taking the beating, instead of figuring out a way to grow as a community and eliminate the bullying in ANY form.

This is the world we live in these days. It is acceptable to bully and victimize someone if they have been labeled the enemy, and no one is adult enough to understand the flaws in that system. No one is mature enough to be honest about it because just like the witch hunts of lore, people are willing to fabricate complete bullshit toward someone else so that they too are not hunted as a witch.

Gaming is being attacked socially again and people are so caught up in things like "Hey people! We're helping women here!" that they won't acknowledge what is happening as a whole here. In the years that come, anyone who identifies as a gamer is going to be seen with this lens. The lens that the media has painted. All of the progress that was made by celebrities showing off their game rooms on MTV's cribs, the celebs coming out as gamers, the celebs starring in game commercials or voice acting in games, all of that work is being undone before our eyes by things like "If you are a GAMER, unfollow me NOW!" and no one gives a shit.

At the end of the day, being a womanizer who hits on drunk women in a bar on a Saturday is and will always be more socially acceptable in the US than sitting at home and gaming with your friends of any race, age, gender or faith.

Grinding up on a woman in a bar is more socially acceptable than grinding out levels. This is the world we have all lived in for a long time and the turncoats who sold this industry out have ensured that it will continue for the foreseeable future, right as eSports grows bigger than most of us ever imagined and gaming as an industry continues to be recession proof.

Long live the GamerGate era, where a man who leaked a woman's nudes as a means of revenge against her is lauded for his efforts in censoring discussion on this topic on his forums.

Double standards are double standards, regardless of who they are victimizing, and they will continue to make us all look like assholes as long as we are too afraid to speak out against the status quo and point them out.

This too is my biggest fear. Gamers are once again pushed to the fringes of society, where they should be rightly be, hauling water and polishing their betters' jock straps...

Everyone is so quick to punish the gamer, calling it a TOXIC CULTURE. Why is that? What is wrong with people, why is there so much prejudice everywhere?

How is it possible that CoD is going back to the twitchy gameplay of Quake? Isnt that inherently sucky with console controllers?

Ive been getting into japanese Anime and Manga a whole lot lately. Find that it pretty much beats western comics any day of the week. To be fair there is a lot of shit out there too, but the good stuff is really, really, fucking awesome. Just finished watching the remade Berserk the Golden Age (1,2 & 3) and it completely blew my mind. Awesome shit.

Junk in the trunk?? Interesting wording there. "Would you like to play with my junk in the trunk?" "'Scuse me while I put away my junk. In my trunk."

WB Confirms Justice League, Wonder Woman, Aquaman Films.

Why, why, and why?!?

1. Justice League: "Holy Shit, Avengers and GotG made a crapton of cash. We need some of that."

2. We haven't had a super hero movie with a woman in the lead. I applaud that. Hopefully they don't include her invisible jet.

3. I understand Jason Momoa will star as Aquaman. I like the idea of a non-white, non-blond Aquaman, and Jason was great as both Khal Drogo and in Conan.

1) Okay, I'll buy that
2) What about Jennifer Garner as Elektra? Yeah it sucked but so will Wonder Woman.
3) Sacrilege! I supposed you liked a female Starbuck too!!!

The new Conan movie is a piece of shit. However Jason Momoa AS Conan was a pretty good casting choice. His Khal Drogo is exactly as I imagined him from the book, and yeah the female Starbuck was pure awesomness!

You missed my point, although I guess I wasnt exactly clear. Society has changed drastically. Human nature has however remained the same. This is indeed one of the main problems with our modern world today, just turn on the news to see the evidence. Hell, the very examples you mentioned are proof of this. Gladiatorial combat is child's play compared to the shit we deal with and experience as a result of this disparity between the human psychology and our 'advanced' society today. Remember all the school shootings, the Norwegian masscre, the jihadist beheadings, the corporate exploatations of 3rd world countries and the countless other evils of our modern world and then tell me with a straight face that we are so much better than our ancestors. Why should a game that explores the taboo subjects of today even from such a controversial POV be censored? If we are indeed as progressive as you claim we are we should be able to deal with it and learn from it, and if it is indeed complete trash then we can just ignore it.

Judgemental? No. Became a mature adult and tired of seeing this garbage as yet one more thing to try to shock and awe us while simultaneously pushing the bar lower and lower? Yes. You notice half of those games you just listed are over a decade old. I played Doom in high school. I played Blood and Shadow Warrior on nights I wasn't out trying to get laid. Now? My priorities have changed. I'm a father now. My sensibilities have changed. THE WORLD HAS CHANGED! You can sit there and deny it all you want, it doesn't change the facts. Society isn't what it was back when DOOM ruled. Since then we've had numerous school shootings, terrorist attacks, anthrax, now Ebola. As much as we want to think that society is the same as it was when Friday the 13th and Nightmare and Texas Chainsaw were in theaters (for the first time), it's not. We constantly push the limits in what kind of horror and gore 'entertainment' we produce - why? Because we're NUMB. Like a junkie, we want that thrill, that 'high' we got from playing DOOM and Quake and that rush from watching the original horror films of the 70's and 80's. But it's not going to happen by pushing the limits past their breaking points. Where does it end? According to John Grisham just viewing child porn shouldn't be illegal. His argument is that viewing it is like viewing any other crime on the computer. You wouldn't lock someone up for watching a robbery or a shooting online, right? So why would you lock someone up for watching child porn? it doesn't hurt anyone. You would know that viewing things like that are not legal in real life. Do you agree with that? Do we have to get to Roman levels of depravity before someone wakes up and realizes we've been down this path before and it doesn't turn out well?

You hit on some valid points there but then you go off on a tangent that has nothing to do with reality. So you have changed, grown up, etc good for you. But the WORLD HAS DEFINITELY NOT CHANGED. You listed some examples there of Roman depravity, school shootings and whatnot. Things are bad. They have always been bad. They will probably get much worse. We are still the same semi intelligent homo sapiens that crawled out of a filthy cave 50,000 years ago. We can change laws, pretend to be progressive and liberal but the same urges that drove us back then, drive us now. Ignoring them is more dangerous than facing them and acknowledging they exist. This game might very well turn out to be garbage like you said, and you are welcome to ignore it but I dont think its the second coming of the Antichrist, just like none of those games we played way back when never turned out to be either.

Well Im going to do what I do in most (although not all) other cases like this. Im going to reserve judgement until the game is out. I thought Postal 1 had its fun moments but wasnt really a great game or anything. In GTA4 we have one of the worst psychopaths ever as our protagonist and that game was pretty well recieved. I agree if the mechanics suck and the game is simply not fun, or its boring then the shock factor is really just window dressing and shabby window dressing at best. But I like games that arent afraid to do their own thing and so Ill be giving this the benefit of doubt until we see more.

Yah, i've always kinda scratched my head about Aquaman. I mean seriously, what if he gets jumped while he's on land by a bunch of thugs in a parking lot? I mean, as he's getting his water lily ass handed to him by these guys, does he jump up and run to the nearest McDonald's dumpster and order a half-eaten Filet-O-Fish sandwich to fight for him?

In a fight between Seaman and Aquaman, who wins?

Well.. I will say this:

The more I read about this game, the more I am all aboard the hype train. I know that's not a popular opinion around here, but i want this game to kick a lot of ass, and set a precedent for games and gamers in the future.. and hopefully we get to see better games because devs arent beholden to a committee of sorts.

Well I want world peace and the end of poverty but...well you see my point right? Wanting things and seing said things acomplished are two different concepts. Especially if you have been following the development of this game from the start. Any person with two rational brain cells in their skull can see what a clusterfuck of epic proportions StarCitizen is turning out to be.

I cant view the trailer at work, but what the hell? Some of the reactions here are surprising to say the least, not to mention disturbing. When did Bluesnews turn into a bastion of political correctness? Listen up you hypocrites, we played through Wolf3d, Doom1, 2 & 3 (where we went to hell), Heretic, Hexen, Blood3d, Shadow Warrior, Duke3d, Postal, Carmageddon, GTA1-5, etc. etc. etc.

We plowed through millions of tons of virtual blood, brains, bones and gore, we killed demons, people, innocent civilians, german soldiers, children in Fallout2, streethookers, junkies, yuppies, and endangered animals. Most of this in our youth, and somehow this game is a stinking pile of shit and taboo?

Judgemental much?

I really dont get the hate against Bono in this case. He is a bit of a douchebag generally speaking, but then again most planetary famous frontmen are. His apology is sincere but this sounds like a typical Apple screwup, except in this case it was much easier by the typical Apple fanboi to point the finger of blame on U2 and Bono instead of the actual content provider, and the proverbial Apple of their eye...

U2 was and remains a great band, I havent really had a chance to listen to this last album but the previous one had at least one great song on it, and for a band that's been around this long and that has produced so many hits that's pretty decent.

Even the same ship with extra weapons and or with cargo will fly differently... The physics are real in the game ... The game is more sim than arcade and its NOT for all people... get over it .

All the physics in the world won't make up for the fact that the most effective way of flying your ship is "turreting".
It currently has the worse flight mechanics of all modern "space sims".
They need to improve it by listening to people who actually fly other space sims, instead of peasants like you who think flying in SC is awesome.

Don't worry too much about BadlronTree, he has posted glowing praise of StarCitizen and Chris Roberts in every SC thread since April (and hasnt posted anywhere else here in the same period) so you can bet most of us are immune to his marketingspeak.

Fucking scaremongering propaganda propagated by the media (for clicks and viewer ratings) and the pharmacological industry. Nothing like a good swine flu, bird flu, mad cow disease, Ebola etc. etc. etc. outbreak scare every few years or so to keep the people on their toes...

Note: Im not against vaccinations, Im against sensationalism. Might as well be against water being wet...

The only show I have really wanted to watch is Game of Thrones. I've never seen one episode and couldn't name one actor or actress in it. I hope to stave off getting into it until the final season, but I doubt that will be possible seeing as how Martin isn't even finished with the book series yet.

Game of Thrones is pretty good, but it's nowhere near as good as the books are obviously. The Wire though is a purebred HBO show, and as good as it gets. Can't recommend it higher.

What's interesting/amusing to me is how the comments for this game always come down to two fanatical sides. Much like every issue these days, there seems to be no moderation whatsoever. You're either all in, or you think it's a giant scam.

I'm dubious of their claims and promises, but think it would be great if they proved everyone wrong. I'd play the game they're envisioning, I'm just skeptical that they can actually pull it off. That being said I hope they can do it, I certainly am not routing for them to fail.

That's not true, most regulars here fall squarely into your category. We are all just too jaded to fall for the hype and have all been around the block a few times.
