Didn't they have another re-release a few years ago called the First Decade?

If I remember correctly, the original game code updates were farmed out to another company (Broken Lizard?) and ended up being an almost complete functional disaster. After the release, there were several attempts at fixing the bugs, but EA finally gave it up as hopeless and the gamer community had to step forward with their own patches which fixed some of the problems. EA evidently recognized the value and hosted it on their own official forums, albeit as an unofficial patch.

I'm sorry EA, but based on how badly you did on the First Decade, I have no reason to think this release will be any better.

Now, admittedly, most of this could be due to the fact that I didn't have to log into some server to play Torchlight,

I think this is being overlooked by the publishers. Of course, they already have my money, so they probably don't care, but I just want to start playing right away.

With D3 (plus other titles), it's a hassle. I have to start a launcher, but sometimes the launcher has to update, sometimes the game has to update, sometimes I have to restart the launcher, then I have to go through another interface to choose my character and then I sometimes have to enter my authenticator code and then I can start playing. Well, except this weekend. My old phone had died, so I got a new phone and tried to log in with the authenticator app, but no go, so I tried to log in to battle.net, but the authenticator didn't work there either. Sigh. After a few FAQ pages, I figured out what was up. Somehow I got the old phone working long enough to generate a working code and quickly logged into my battle.net profile to add the new phone. After that, I started the whole process of logging into the game again, but after all that, I just couldn't bring myself to grind through D3 for any length of time, especially since my progress won't be saved if I don't make it to one of the 'magic' spots. Maybe it was a bad night, but for some reason, it just seemed like a whole lot of work to get to the point of playing a game.

Is he really saying that if you play F2P and _don't_ purchase something, they consider you a pirate?

"new version optimizes campaign saves"

Wow, it sure did. All my autosaves and manual saves disappeared, so all progress in the game is now gone. But hey, I still can see my achievements. :-(

Without hearing more detail, it sounds like they need to check out their cross-platform tools. Something's not right if one platform is crashing 5x more than another.

I've ended up creating the other classes too. Some of the weapons and skill upgrades looked like too much fun _not_ to play!

Best damn $20 I've spent in a while!!

I hear ya! The nice part is that with very few exceptions, they've all been the result of those killer sales that have been out there.

One of the exceptions though is Torchlight. It's well worth the price and extremely addicting! I keep mumbling very late at night "one more level... one more socketed item..."

Meh, that just means more time with Torchlight. For $20, that's turned out to a great deal.

Yep, based on the logo, it looks like it's going to be a game where you're a futuristic delivery guy in a brown spaceship that's faced with the prospect of missing your overnight delivery due to hoards of aliens?

Wait for a demo. There's no tutorial mode, so it's been a pain for me to figure out. Maybe I'm getting old, but it wasn't fun to be just thrown into the game and have no idea what's going on.

I'd suggest the author of the article needs to take a trip to New Orleans sometime. The population has a healthy percentage of black people, so it makes complete sense that there would be black zombies.

RE: Overon

All I can say is no kidding. After reading the forum thread, it looks like that community hasn't been through a C&C release before? They seem to be so naive? Or am I too cynical?

How many years has APOC been the only guy in the C&C support forums? To me, it looks like the same old thing, EA ships a game that needs patches ASAP, APOC appears every once in a while to say how rough he has it with the coding/qa teams, the coding team is moved on to other projects, the QA team is overworked/inadequate, nothing gets fixed, etc.

The sad thing is the community turnover is so high that when APOC appears and tells the sob story about how hard it is to work with the coding/qa teams, some people buy it and think there's progress being made, but don't realize it's just part of the same script that's been rolled out a few times now.

That isn't too say there are patches being released. but after being through a few of these launches with them (as a customer), it isn't hard to see what's up. There's a definite limit to the amount of time/effort EA'll put into a title and after that point, there's little the community can say/do to force EA to issue patches. Sure, there will be a few patches released, but inevitably those will have balance/bug issues, which require the release of further patches, which probably won't get released.

Alas, those poor dedicated souls in the C&C:TFD forum with their petition for TFD v1.03... :-)

AcidDrone, you bring up a good point. With the anticipated patches that will be released, I wonder if there will there be a Spring 2008 demo or something like that? The demo that came out a few weeks ago was underwhelming, but who knows, maybe a freshly patched one in a few months might be just the ticket?

Optimized? Nah, they have the Win95 compatibility flags set. As for being worth getting, there will be more patches needed. Check out the EA C&C TFD support forum for discussions regarding the remaining problems. Some people can run the games fine, but others are having spotty luck. My problems include not being able to move a unit to the top left corner of the screen and gradual Windows GUI corruption leading to game/system lockup.

I liked the idea of it, but it just has been a wreck for me. More details in the EA C&C support forum.

No need to buy this one. EA just repackaged the existing disks + patches onto one DVD. One problem though, they didn't QA the final product, so they got missing music/missing videos/missing easter eggs/memory crashes/network play issues/CD validation problems, etc.

BTW, for all the talk of reworked for XP, it turns out their idea consisted of a menu program that set the compatibility flags on the old executables.

So... if the deal is with the player's union, what teams will they play on? Does EA expect the NHL to allow the use of team branding?

Holy. FUCK. They don't even know what weapons will be in the game yet.

Come on... playtesting and balancing... what's that? A couple of hours? Just 'playtesting and balancing' the pole dancers could take weeks!!!

Gear, the 3DR forums have a pieced together a time frame of '06/07, based on GB's comments, which seems to match your guess. A late '07 release gives 3DR 3 years to finish the game.

As for the salaries, don't forget they were asking people to sign on for a low salary, but points on the product. Who knows if that's still the case, but depending on how long you could string people along, that would lower your overhead.
