If I had just watched a film full of violence or played a game full of violence, I'd be a bit more cautious too when approaching the scene of an altercation. I'd be surveying the scene first to make sure no mutants or gun-wielding psychopaths were around. |

I'd be more anxious to buy it if he had released it back when the 360 version came out. I've already played the 360 version now.
If he's able to get the game up on Steam though, I'll buy it at release for the $15 just to support his efforts. |

I know it was about as scripted as a film but it worked, it sucked me in and it felt awesome (well, mostly) Agreed.
To answer the first question, mostly the "since" part.
I thought CoD4 was pretty good - but it didn't make it up in to my "best FPS" pile, mainly due to the shooting-gallery-rail-shooter nature of the gameplay. But that aside, the since part; CoD4 was a while ago - there have been a lot of great shooters since then.
I'm glad you brought up Bioshock. It's a good one. |

Creston: The underlying point of the article is that the XBOX should have just been a small form factor PC and it should have been able to run PC games. XBOX Live should have just been software like Steam. Whatever specialized hardware is in the XBOX should have been available to put in to any PC, pushing the PC market forward.
It would have worked exactly the same for all the "console" gamers. They'd still have an XBOX in their living room connected to their big TV. The only difference is that the XBOX would play PC games and Microsoft wouldn't have essentially abandoned the PC gaming market.

I've thought it would be great to be able to register a store bought game on Steam and be able to download it in the future and such like. The problem I saw was that there's nothing in it for Valve to justify the bandwidth Unless they kept track of how many retail copies were activated in Steam...and they could then bill the publisher for that cost (or partial cost) as if the game were purchased through Steam. Sounds reasonable to me. |

I read a lot about the nerfed controls for the PC version. Has this been fixed? The only time the controls were problematic was if I had vsync enabled - then the mouse input would lag and stutter.
With vsync off the controls were just fine.
Also, aiming lowers the sensitivity, though it's honestly not that big of a deal. Oh no, you have to move the mouse half an inch further in a direction to aim. whoop-de-doo.
Lastly, to note since a lot of people seemed to not grasp this: When in your inventory, hold down middle mouse and drag to move the inventory cursor around. Simpler than holding alt and using the arrow keys or whatever else people were doing. |

Wow. Go read my original comment and soak it in - because you've got it all wrong.
There obviously is penalty and challenge still.
The thing is
if I've already completed this much:
start [====|challenging obstacles|=======|challenging obstacles|===========|challenging obstacles|========|challenging obstacles|======|you are here|==============] finish
Why should I have to start back at the beginning? I already did all of that shit - it's just the one obstacle I'm stuck at 10 minutes after the checkpoint. It should start me out just before the area that I died at so I can do THAT challenge again - not the whole damn level.
That's what I'm talking about.
You may return your head to where it was now. |

The difference is a narrative-based game vs. an arcade game.
I don't mind replaying sections in an arcade game. I do mind replaying sections in a narrative based game, as it breaks the narrative flow. |

Jerykk: I wasn't talking about PoP specifically, I've never played a PoP game aside from the Gameboy one - I was talking about checkpoint systems and why I appreciate the fact that the checkpoint system in PoP sounds forgiving.
It was a retort to the other guys comment about how not wanting to replay a section over and over somehow means you don't like games.

The game was simply horrid on the PC. Terrible controls, the engine that couldn't, a super-restricted PoV Didn't have any of those problems. The game ran perfectly. The viewable space around me was plenty. The controls were great.
One of my favorite PC games this year! |

To me, that translates into "I really hate playing games". More like, "I really like the game and would like to see more of it than just this area I keep dying at."
What irks me about checkpoint systems and losing, sometimes massive amounts of progress, is that replaying one area over and over dilutes the wow factor and my overall enjoyment of the game. After I've seen a cutscene or done a button-mashing event 10 times in rapid succession, I never want to see it again.
Also, if the obstacle I keep dying at is far off from the last checkpoint, I never really have a chance to practice or figure out the solution to escape the trap as I keep getting sent back to 10 minutes ago to get through all of the stuff I just did.
It really kills the experience. I love games, I hate infrequent checkpoint systems that ignore my progress. So, I too appreciate the no-death system as it's really just synonymous to me hitting quicksave before attempting a tricky section I don't see the solution to.
