News Comments > XCOM: Enemy Unknown Official Announcement

Beamer wrote on Jan 5, 2012, 15:46:
There's only one other top secret jaw dropping unannounced game I still know about. That one was in concept exploration when I heard about it, so I don't even know if it ever moved beyond that. It's one of the few games I think would create the same excitement this announcement does.
Let me guess... X-Wing (or one of the other space sims) remake? AAA Dwarf Fortress? Faithful Star Control 2 AAA remake? A new MMO that is a proper game in its own right, and merely also features MM components?

...anyway, please tell us when this 2nd thing is about to be announced. This news makes me want to finish that game of UFO: Alien Invasion I had on the go.

Neat idea. ROMs are so available and easy though, it's not really useful for anyone but purists and museum-keepers.

I feel it's unethical to warn, suspend or ban players who are playing the game within the mechanics you designed instead of the way you intended. If your mechanics allow an action you did not intend, change the mechanics.

Well said.

Still a non-story and a viewcount-grabbing headline.

Thanks morga, good link. I knew there were male specific issues, I just didn't know which.

Not that feminism should be disregarded. I do not agree with the stereotype of "man hating feminist", it's just unhelpful and dismissive. Both sides have their points and neither should take priority. An equal society is better for all. Clearly my comment is far too late and level headed to influence the conversation though.

I'm sure there are women hating "mens rights" people, arising simply as a reaction to feeling threatened by "womens rights", which is silly. I'm sure "female supremacists" exist but they are blown out of all proportion by the media which loves to sell these stories, as they make us angry.

Ultraviolet (uvvu.com) is beginning to look a lot like "steam for movies" albeit with slightly more restrictive DRM. They're getting there... 10 years and a few dozen billion dollars after the pirates.

They don't seem to have a clear idea on how they want to integrate profile services with in-game naming and I don't see how this addresses that.
I'd suggest that people clearly don't, and that they should work on something else instead.

So it's like a TS overlay, but with buttons? Surprised that hasn't been done already, it'll be reet handy. Alt-tabbing out to hop to another squads channel was rather inconvenient.

I don't know why devs even bother with making their own VOIP systems when they could just integrate TS.

Oh also, its for things like tablets, which are shooting off and overtaking laptops. Laptops already had passed up desktops in many areas. People on tablets and phones don't want to pay much money (if any) for casual games, so F2P fits that much better. Plus companies are looking at things like Zynga raking in the millions from F2P facebook games.

Apart from sales and portability, in every other area, desktops are still king.

Apart from the lack of a mouse, there's no reason you can't do decent games that will run on most peoples laptops (just scale the graphics and physics down to 2004 levels and dress it up in a nice art-style) but all the big companies seem to be doing is shitting out terrible, terrible versions of old franchises, with social networking, unlocks and achievements in lieu of compelling gameplay mechanics. It's worse than when bloom replaced art-style.

Not to mention the very stretched definition of MMO.

pornography is presented as a realistic representation of human sexuality
que

no it isn't

Porn in general could be of much higher quality though. Something that isn't demeaning to the men and women involved, because lets face it, the men don't look too great either.

Not seeing any minecraft comparisons. A zombie survival game with scavenging is one of the top 5 discussed notional games that hasn't been made yet, along with a new X wing and simialr titles.

Looking forward to this.
