Finished and played are different things especially for a long game like The Witcher 2. I bet if you could come up with the stats back in the brick-and-mortar days for a game like Baldur's Gate 2 it would be similar.

This isn't that terrible. The 5% unreal takes is before the steam cut, and nearly 100% of developers building on unreal are hoping to list on steam anyway. So the actual outcome in either scenario is: 5%+30%; or just 30%. Valve is not preventing you from listing elsewhere, so if steam suddenly goes belly up, you are still in control of your ip and can keep doing whatever you want with it. Not to mention that you DON'T have to pay the 5% from revenue from other listings - it's only 30% on the steam sales.
