News Comments > Blizzard Rumors: "Low Expectations" for Heroes of the Storm?
18. Re: Blizzard Rumors: Jan 30, 2015, 12:36 loomy

Heroes of the Storm is fun. It's exactly what I wanted from that clusterfuck of a genre: some modesty. Simplicity. Maybe even a little elegance.

Did they simplify it too much? Maybe so. There's definitely nothing "pro" about it -- the skill ceiling is one thumb high, despite what the pro-gamer-wannabe vultures would have you believe. It's basically a really nice browser game. So, the price is right.

You can see the low expectations from the outside. I'd say the game is clearly made by a B-team within Blizzard. The content is very limited in quantity and quality. But like I said the price (free) is right. That they charge $10 for a crappy skin (and probably $40 to buy enough characters to be eligible for ranked play) is a problem only for people who care about things like that. I just join, kill some people, and quit.

The gameplay is kind of like a dead simple Guild Wars (1) PVP for children. It's fun -- I guess that's the long and short of it!

I wish I liked this game. To me it is everything Guild Wars was meant to NOT be. They sold out to NCSoft to chase WOW.

development of this game is so transparent that you can learn everything that happens and compare it to your non-existent game development experience

Valve is wealthy enough now that they need to begin parallel development of a new client. It doesn't matter if it succeeds or not, because if you believe in this sort of thing, the competition makes both projects better.

"The game WILL NOT consumer the current budget"

this ranter is an idiot

also: star citizen will be in development for a decade! the scope is huge and they have ~10 inexperienced teams working on it. they need as much money as they can get.

only a basic version of the game will be "done" next year at this time. next year it will be like elite dangerous is now, but with better graphics and a few hours of single player.

re: ssds

you would need to run this game for a century to reach the failure loads found in ssd endurance testing by techreport

I hate to break it to everyone, but you can't break your ssd with workload

Elite Dangerous is a good indie game, not a good AAA game. If the lamebrain professional reviewers out there tackle this as an AAA game it will not review well.

It is up to Braben to make sure everyone everywhere knows that this game is a sandbox, period.

I can break the tie: this game (and the cinematic) are 100% laughably derivative... and also 100% good.

once again CIG fails to message how incomplete the game is.

the age of this FPS game is measured in months, not years. unless you've been working at EA or activision, you've never seen a AAA game this early.... this incomplete.

and for how early and incomplete it is, it looks fine. grow up wankers

5. Re: Natural Selection 2: Combat Friday; Livestream Underway Oct 30, 2014, 00:08 loomy

For those who don't know, NS2 was a failure because the creator was emotionally attached to his original game design and ignored the numbers in front of his face: NS Combat was more popular and more fun than NS Classic.

He launched NS2 with just the classic game mode (which is only appropriate for organized teams) and it bombed.

Huge, huge, huge missed opportunity given how good asymmetrical gameplay can be, how he helped define some modern ideas about it, and how big it is getting NOW.

The part where they flew through the city on their way to dock, was that free-form flying, or was it a predetermined path? Because if that was free-form, I think I just had a little accident in my pants....

FEAR multiplayer (spun off as "F.E.A.R. Combat") was really, really good. So good that they spun it off so everyone could play it. A really visceral, fun TDM with matrix kung fu moves and halo gunplay. That game being so good is probably why they're doing this new game. This is a forgotten story, apparently

If you don't have enough money to deliver what you promised, then you failed at fundraising and broke your promise.

summary: crowdfunding is a scam and only works when it works

The next really big news will be when they announce they are changing game engine.

I know that was a joke, but they actually are changing the engine. cryengine doesn't support their game design and they'll be a year or more rebuilding it to support double precision. the current maps are so small because cryengine can't do bigger. chris roberts has implied they have more cryengine developers than crytek
