News Comments > Natural Selection 2: Combat Friday; Livestream Underway
5. Re: Natural Selection 2: Combat Friday; Livestream Underway Oct 30, 2014, 00:08 loomy

For those who don't know, NS2 was a failure because the creator was emotionally attached to his original game design and ignored the numbers in front of his face: NS Combat was more popular and more fun than NS Classic.

He launched NS2 with just the classic game mode (which is only appropriate for organized teams) and it bombed.

Huge, huge, huge missed opportunity given how good asymmetrical gameplay can be, how he helped define some modern ideas about it, and how big it is getting NOW.

The part where they flew through the city on their way to dock, was that free-form flying, or was it a predetermined path? Because if that was free-form, I think I just had a little accident in my pants....

landing on planets will be in-engine cutscenes. you just watched one

FEAR multiplayer (spun off as "F.E.A.R. Combat") was really, really good. So good that they spun it off so everyone could play it. A really visceral, fun TDM with matrix kung fu moves and halo gunplay. That game being so good is probably why they're doing this new game. This is a forgotten story, apparently

If you don't have enough money to deliver what you promised, then you failed at fundraising and broke your promise.

summary: crowdfunding is a scam and only works when it works

The next really big news will be when they announce they are changing game engine.

I know that was a joke, but they actually are changing the engine. cryengine doesn't support their game design and they'll be a year or more rebuilding it to support double precision. the current maps are so small because cryengine can't do bigger. chris roberts has implied they have more cryengine developers than crytek

38. Re: Microsoft to Acquire Mojang for $2B? Sep 10, 2014, 11:12 loomy

Microsoft is the one company rich and crazy enough to beat all the other bidders. Whatever Mojang sells for, it can be justified long-term because Minecraft has the hearts and minds of generations of new human beings. Lego is the new biggest toy company. Minecraft could be the next biggest in 20 years.

Or Microsoft could destroy it like everything else they acquire. But the theory is sound!

Have we seen *anything* substantial in Squadron 42?

days of youtube video and books of text have been published by this company. squadron 42 news is buried in there, but if one is not paying attention to it all, one won't know what is going on

this is the last big update I remember: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yaq7LUOZIkI

they've recently talked about finishing the script and budgeting for the actors and motion capture. it will cost something like $10 million for that

"in the time that they’ve had, the amount of progress they could have made so far should be exponentially more than what they have"

total bullshit spewed by a keyboard warrior with no business experience. you can tell because he doesn't know what "exponentially" means

if this guy tried to scale up an innovative software development project likes this, to nearly 10 offices worldwide like them, he'd have a grilled cheese sandwich completed so far

Look at the unusual Youtube negativity. That's a lesson for Microsoft and everyone else. Serve your existing customers, otherwise they will torpedo your efforts to attract new ones.

This is the way it should be. Analog stick is used more than dpad, and the touch pad can duplicate the dpad sufficiently well, but not the stick. 10/10 valve

You sad fucks criticizing Arena Commander have never played a space sim 2 years before it was done. I doubt you've played anything 2 years before it was done, because anyone so ignorant couldn't have come from inside the games industry.

for all you debaters, minecraft's excellence does not correlate with its popularity. it's popular because creative building/lego games were and are still rare. it's easier to corner the market when you are left alone for 10 years

getting rich isn't notch's reward for being wonderful, it's profit loss punishment for all the other assholes who thought there was no demand for construction games. assholes

8. Re: Star Citizen's Realistic Flight Explained Jun 19, 2014, 11:02 loomy

One problem they're facing is the disconnect between developers and non-developers. Balance can and will change.

Another problem is how all the flight sim nerds are noisily complaining that space flight doesn't feel like atmosphere flight.
