Until you mentioned him, I had never heard of Michael Pachter.

He used to essentially troll pretty heavily for attention with absurd headline bites. Well known for his grandiose and often vague predictions. He used to shit on the PC platform pretty regularly too so he doesn't have many fans around here haha.

Pachter committed the one of gaming's gravest sins. He defended fucking EA over the Mass Effect 3 ending. There is no hell big enough...

And you mean the market cap that places America's corporations as Exxon, Apple, and Google in that order? You mean that it only took them less than 10 years to crush what easily should have been Microsoft's #2 spot? Who doesn't know about market cap? Uh huh, keep derpim' away.

And what's the number 4 US publicly-held corporation by market cap? Microsoft. What was number 3 in the first quarter of this year? Microsoft. Also, Exxon is the number 2 US publicly held company by market cap; Apple has the number 1 spot. It's almost like these corporations move up and down in their relative rankings but all are in the same tier of competition!

I frankly don't give a shit who is the biggest corporation, but if you're going to make an asinine comment (Apple and Google don't do stupid stuff like Microsoft) and then support it with a metric that cannot be directly compared (stock price) then you need to be called on it. And if you're suddenly so concerned about market cap, then why two days ago were you quoting stock prices as if that had any meaning? It's almost like you had the stunning revelation that not all publicly held corporations have the same number of outstanding shares, subsequently googled "market cap", and are now backpedaling and shifting goal posts in a desperate attempt not to look like a jack ass.

lol, thank you for saving me the time in typing that out. I was thinking the exact same thing.

All I can find with a quick search a NYT article about EA trying to buy Valve for 1 bn. Gabe commented that he'd rather see Valve disintegrate before being sold... If only the Bioware docs felt the same...

Wish I could find the statement, but it was more along the lines of he could buy either EA or MS with the current capital that valve has. Where as MS or EA would require asset offloading plus stock trades to make it happen, and as many people know--cash is still king. So are physical assets with purchases.

What? As of May 2014 (first link I could find, I'm lazy), Microsoft's market value was $343.82 billion. Do you seriously think Valve has 350 BILLION dollars in cash lying around? Steam made 1.5 billion dollars in revenue last year. I know it makes them insane amounts of money, but we're still talking massive levels of difference here.

MS probably has enough cash to buy Valve, IF Gabe was interested in selling, but he's never given any kind of indication that he was, nor that he'd be amenable to MS taking over and, undoubtedly, completely fucking ruining Steam.

Right now they're something like 380 billion. Just a little out of valve's price range. And that's just market value, there's tons of other assets, and cash on hand of course. I do remember Gabe saying something about this though. I'll try and find the quote.

Wouldn't MS be better off trying to buy Valve, acquiring Steam makes much more sense than Minecraft.
Actually, if Newell's comments on that previously are anything to go by, Valve has a larger liquid capital amount than MS. The difference between the two is private vs public in terms of trading.

It is true, Valve would cost a great deal more than 2bn. I'd be curious to know how much. I don't see that one ever happening. Kind of moot.

Microsoft, "Not sure what we should do, but things are looking grim"

Gates, "well guys, my suggestion, take the money you do have, fashion a lasso, and try to catch ahold of anything in hopes that it will keep the ship from sinking any faster"

They're definitely not in favor for several of the markets they compete. But I'm not sure a sinking ship is accurate. These guys still manage to pull in 10s of billions a year. Despite their weak presence in the gadget and this generations gaming market.

Yes. Eye roll. And it is third. Tetris is #1 (by a landslide), Wii sports is second.

Err what? Minecraft isn't even in the top 10 for all time sales. Of course its young and accomplished a lot in a short period of time (although its done it on multiple platforms unlike several other properties on that list) but either way you're way off base.

Let's not pretend it isn't a enormous, massive success. I'd wager my ancedotal evidence is better than yours.

I didn't pretend it wasn't a success, thats a straw man from you. I was just pointing out that experiences vary, I like Minecraft but it just doesn't have that sort of market penetration here.

I'd argue that it is, if not more. Go to any grade school and ask for a raise of hands on who likes Minecraft and I bet nearly all those little hands go up. My kids, and all their little friends. They live and breathe this game..

We have a 6 year old and I have yet to encounter anyone (parent or child) playing or mention Minecraft around here. So yeah anecdotes and all that. Besides, the casual market is fickle and unpredictable, everyone loved Justin Bieber not too long ago.

It is, I think, the third highest selling game of all time? Is that right? Or was it second? But either way far more than any pokemon game and it's barely started on the merch. Cards and board games will hit the market next. Let's not pretend it isn't a enormous, massive success. I'd wager my ancedotal evidence is better than yours.

Has anyone even considered the fact that Minecraft as a property is pretty much at Pokemon-level mass appeal and recognition at this point?

I don't think its anywhere near Pokemon levels of market penetration (~300 million vs what, 33 million?) though to be fair Pokemon isn't doing as well with the youth of today thanks to Nintendos odd marketing. It has a lot of youth appeal for sure but I'm not sure what kind of staying power its going to have over time which I think is a healthy question to ask in a multi-billion acquisition. I wouldn't have much faith in a Microsoft produced sequel to be honest but perhaps you're right that it would just sell on name alone regardless of quality. It certainly seems to work for EA at times.

I'd argue that it is, if not more. Go to any grade school and ask for a raise of hands on who likes Minecraft and I bet nearly all those little hands go up. My kids, and all their little friends. They live and breathe this game.

I don't get it at all, and I've REALLY tried to get it. But there was something Notch did with this game that just burrowed into the brains of our youth..... Ok NOW I know why Microsoft is so interested. Their next phone will be Minecraft themed and targeted to 14 yr olds.

The world is doomed.

This cant be true, can it? I mean the ludicrous hypocrisy and double-standards if true is just utterly amazing.

After publicly spitting the dummy and shaming and calling a boycott on Oculus Rift for "selling out" after being acquired by Facebook, to then turn around sell out yourself (to Microsoft of all companies!) is just too hilarious to be true.

Didn't he also come down on MS when they wanted him to port MC to the Windows Store?

This one I get, at least. Mojang has a product, that they sell for real money. But Snapchat and Whatsapp being valued 10bn and 18bn?

Although, I'm not sure this is a good fit, Mojang is essentially one game. Wouldn't MS be better off trying to buy Valve, acquiring Steam makes much more sense than Minecraft.

Yes. I want this game.

Why?

Because, like every title people on here bitch and whine about, it's not as bad as they claim...

Plus, you know... Different opinions/interests/etc...

I thoroughly enjoyed it. The fighting style took some adjusting, and was too easy in many ways, but otherwise it looked and played great.

Yeah, I felt the same. The game wasn't fantastic, but for the most part I enjoyed the play thru, don't think I'll ever play thru it again. But I'd probably pick up a sequel, if one were to ever be made.

If by nerdgasm you mean mostly quiet people, then sure.

I know it's hard to believe, but Freespace 2 is a month shy of being 15 years old. A significant chunk of gamers, especially the kind that attends things like PAX, will have never played it, and will have no idea even what it is.

I feel so old...
