I know it meant million way back but I think the only people to use it now, aside from Blue, are people working in print media and that's hardly applicable here. They're just taking the word "Million" and then removing all of the letters except for the M's. |

maybe if you include advertising.. but i wouldnt consider that part of the deal, if its privately funded to begin with
18 mil is easily a AAA dev budget if you dont include marketing Nah I think he meant Cutter was lowballing it with the 3mil figure because you don't ship a sequel to Pyschonauts on anything less than 10mil IMHO. Right-o. |

Do you have any idea how much it costs to pay even 10 people a reasonable salary plus benefits, have insurance for your company, and pay for its existence (incorporation papers, etc.)? $1MM dollars isn't even enough to pay the salary, let alone everything else, especially in the California Bay Area for a year. I won't even get into the real estate costs out here.
With that said, I personally think $18MM is more than I expected. I didn't expect more than $10MM. Yes, actually I do know because I've run several business with a dozen plus employees. Using your example that would probably be around 600k+/-. Even really pushing it with nicer offices, higher salary and better benefits, etc. let's call it a million. We're still talking about Psychonauts here. How it could go beyond 2 mil is beyond me, so yeah, I totally get where Notch is coming from on this. I'd dearly LOVE to see how DF breaks down this 18 mil. I have no idea how you could not see it going beyond $2MM. Just the salary + benefits for 10 developers and artists in the California Bay Area for two years alone is easily more than $2MM.
And yes, it would have been interesting to see the breakdown.
Without knowing the scope of the game, estimated development time, platforms supported, etc. this is all armchair guesses anyway.
But I think you're still lowballing the estimate. Grossly lowballing the estimate. We're talking about software engineering here, not a maid business where you can pay all of your illegals minimum wage (i.e. Cutter's Cleaners). |

I'm looking forward to this. i know right, welcome to blues forums... *sadface*
but think of it this way, if the haters don't play the game, then that means it'll be a more hater-free experience for the rest of us
this looks great, loved morrowind, oblivion, and skyrim, but i always wanted to play with my friends, and now i can! thanks TES for giving me exactly what i want.

Techie714 © wrote on Jan 16, 2013, 14:19: YES!! I'm already a fan of "Nuka-Cola Break" but I would love to see a dark, serious, & violent Fallout series on the scale of Walking Dead TV show. I doubt though it would appeal to a massive audience, their are only so many people that spend their free time reading the Fallout Wiki for fun...like me...lol.
One thing is for sure though, were going to see some kind of Fallout news this year most likely.... I don't think they could really do it without a totally insane budget though. I don't want something like Fallout confined to the small sets and cheap location shoots I see on TWD. Book of Eli had its problems but they sure nailed the sets and design of a Fallout-ish world, unfortunately the movie cost a literal fortune.
But hey you never know, CGI can do wonders. I didn't think anyone could do Game of Thrones but that show has some amazing CGI in place of the larger areas that aren't feasible.
I think a huge part of the enjoyment is putting yourself in as a character though so I don't see a show really working in a way the fans of the games would like. I agree regarding GoT. However, the dire wolves in season 1 were very disappointing. They were siberian huskies and cuddly-looking ones at that. |

Closed Betas wrote on Dec 27, 2012, 22:22: Amazon most satisfying?
Lol, I guess satisfying is because amazon sells items at cost for growth, which is what exactly is killing this generation of middleclass... Can't make a dime off minimum wage, non profit run businesses, built to put the rest of the world in slavery.
But I guess when you complain, the fact amazon gives you anything you want, from free packages to free refunds, you get to earn satisfying opinions...
But be warned, they are in the red, and will sell their mothers to be the walmart of online wholesale.. and as the porn industry has shown... it will collapse faster than it was built... |
