News Comments > Free WOOT DLC for Magicka Released
7. Re: Free WOOT DLC for Magicka Released Aug 9, 2012, 17:51 Vulkan

The reason the game had a bad initial impression with critics was because it was released in a very buggy state, numerous patches have since fixed most of the technical problems.

Also, why do they start shooting at our hero? They shouldn't start shooting at any bystander who is covering their face, not in that sort of weather, and they shouldn't be able to recognise him with his face covered. Maybe they're using some hack system of their own, but all to often in games, they seem to use magic, and if you're making a gritty, pseudo-realistic game like this looks to be, that breaks the immersion IMHO.

From what I got from the clip, the player character makes his presence plainly known at the art show as part of his strategy, perhaps as a show of intimidation (And you can tell some of the attendants recognize him, as they refer to him by name), so it's logical to think the target's bodyguards who were already on their way were made well aware of the player's presence at the art show by the target's assistant, they would then assume that the car crash was no mere coincidence and would therefore be immediately alerted by anyone acting or looking suspicious.

I dunno, the GWJ guys made this game sound like work (i.e. very hard and unforgiving). Is the effort worth the payoff?

Don't worry about it, most of the people that whine about how impossible the game is don't know how to keep their guards up.

And if you ever hit a brick wall with a boss fight, you can always summon someone from the online pool of players to help you out, there's always someone willing to lend a hand, myself included.

The game is most certainly worth the effort, it's one of the better games I've played in recent memory.

I'd say this is more of a prequel to the original game than a reboot.

The only thing I want to know is: Will this be a PC only title or will it also be released for consoles? Because if it's the latter I'm just gonna go postal right now.

To echo the comments, I played this on the 360 when it was released some time ago and it is indeed a bunch of fun in a cheap package, not quite as campy as the previous game but then that might just be a good thing to a larger majority of players. (I still prefer EDF 2017's scrappy feel though)

In gameplay, EDF:IA (And really, the entire series) is reminiscent of the first Serious Sam game.

A world of wonder, a land of beauty, across the mountains and over the sea but I still haven't found any diamonds.

I've been walking around for miles, still no diamonds to be found. Maybe I should look underground?

You're never going to find diamonds at ground level, the simplest way to find diamonds is to dig a staircase down until you find bedrock, then tunnel around that same depth. Be sure to have an iron pickaxe or better on hand to mine them.

Aw, never release on Fridays?? I can't think of a better day of the friggin' week to release awesomeness!

There was an update released on a Friday a while back that broke a mess of things, since Notch and Co. tend to not work on weekends, the game went broken until Monday.

10. Re: Warhammer 40:000 Space Marine Demo Aug 24, 2011, 10:57 Vulkan

I read a great article by a developer not too long ago that delved into the whole "Heroes hate helmets" thing, though I can't seem to find it anymore... Anyway, the main reason why is good ol' fashioned individuality, to make the hero stand out among all the faceless goons.

Dead Space 2 is, so far, the best example of a game getting around this popular trope with the hero's neat collapsible helmets.

Speaking of 40k in particular I recall a bit in one of the fluff pieces describing the typical suit of powered armor and how the first thing that fails on them is usually the air filtration system, forcing the wearer to remove his helmet in order to continue breathing.

In the table top game, most of the metallic officer and commander unit models don't even come with a helmet and when they do it's usually a different design than what the basic units come with, though you can take the helmet from one of the fancier plastic units that come with separate parts and use it on the metallic one. From a gameplay standpoint, it's a good idea for heroes to go without helmets so that players can easily identify where their more important units are among the gaggle of basic units, though you can get around this by painting the hero's helmet a different color scheme.

Then there's the whole Space Wolves "We don't like helmets because we can track smells better without them" deal their scouts swear by.

Not sure to what degree but that artifact is present in many FPS. Unless I'm mistaken it is/was in Quake engine based games.
No, iD software has fixed this issue since Quake, but in their previous games, it was present (Doom 1+2, Wolfenstein). If you watch Doom speedruns, they always run diagonally which looks kinda funny

I wonder when they fixed it... I'm pretty certain this was an issue even in in HL.

I think Valve fixed it for HL, but it had a different movement related oddity: Hugging the walls by running forwards and towards the wall gave you extra speed.

In addition to that, the Aether mod and the Titans mod are must haves these days.

Really, any mod that adds objectives and things to shoot for are highly recommended.

I'm afraid any initial impressions of Arkham City's Mr Freeze have been forever tainted by the Governator and his horrible, horrible puns.
