Sexism in game content is a lot less of a problem than sexism in game development studios and the gaming community at large.

If you're a more casual MMO player, don't bother with this title. It's quite a grind to level if you don't have a static 2-3 person group, and they've focused their modest budget on PvE endgame so that they don't need a bunch of subs to keep the game rolling along.

There's other stuff in the game, but that's where their focus is. So if you're not interested in that, don't bother.

I had to get use to driving and the car handling in the game. It's not as good as GTA4/5 but slightly better then Saints Row 3 and Sleeping Dogs, but Motorcycles are just as horrible as Saints 3 and Sleeping Dogs.

I found myself actually preferring motorcycles in Watch Doge after I spent some time with them. My gamepad was having issues so I had to go back to KB/Mouse for driving, and for some reason motorcycles were a lot easier for me with KB/Mouse than cars were. Plus it's a lot easier to not kill civilians with the smaller profile.

And the city is full of little sidewalks and stairs that motorcycles handle easily but cars will not. And being able to thread Blockers is nice too.

It's just sad to see how little stuff there is in WD, while said stuff IS in GTA5. I can't even imagine how little there would have been in WD had they not delayed it right after GTA5 came out and they realized their game would have looked terrible compared to it.

Probably shouldn't be watching biased, literally one-sided videos by people with an axe to grind if you don't want to feel sad.

Maybe I ought to make a video where I compare Saints Row to GTA by rubbing my car against a wall and then declare the Saints Row series literally unplayable shit.

Finally beat the story last night, and I've gotten through most of the side stuff now.

I'm interested to see where they go with the franchise. I'm hoping a Watch Dogs 2 will be similar to Assassins Creed 2 in terms of a bump in focus. Like figuring out what worked, what didn't, and doubling down on what did. And of course fixing the performance disaster. Game looked and ran phenomenally for me, but my system is nowhere representative of what developers should be targeting.

All in all, I'd say it's a solid first installment for a new game, but you can definitely see a lot of AC1 in it, where they didn't know exactly what they wanted to do.

Most likely. They've greenlit how many hundreds of games? And only a small handful have been such a clusterfuck they had to be pulled. I'd be surprised if it's even 1%.

So is the industry going to take this as a lesson that highly polished game releases are much less important than a glorified but misleading PR campaign? Did this unfinished release damage their rep with gamers?

Ubisoft's reputation for highly optimized PC versions never existed, so it can't really be damaged. They've always preferred the kitchen sink method for their PC versions. Lots of feature support, tons of options and tweaks, but no real time spent on optimization.

Their attitude is that people can turn the settings down or buy better hardware. It's a lazy attitude for them to take, but it's not a new one.

Not really surprised, a lot of hype on this one. Keep in mind they are saying it's THEIR best selling first day, not industry-wide. Not really hard to believe since it's a new game so you don't have a bunch of people saying, for example "Eh, Assassin's Creed, I already know what to expect. I'll get it used or on Steam sale.

They haven't launched a big new IP in like 7 years, so...

I would sure hope so. While I'm an advocate of the "let computers drive" idea, I would never, ever, EVER get in a car that has no way for me to take control if it should become necessary.

And it would be necessary a lot for people who do more than just commute to work and back. I just don't see self-driving cars ever being able to account for every edge case. For example, what happens when it's time to go off-road, or somewhere that the computer doesn't know there is a road. You need a whole new set of optimizations and collision detection routines for that. Or, you could just have a manual mode for people.

This misses the point... The reality is that MS is a terrible gatekeeper for gaming on PC's.

No, I get your point. You want emphasis on open source and open standards. But MS isn't a "gatekeeper" to begin with. Anyone can develop for Windows. They can make their shit open source too, if they want. They don't even have to use MS's graphics API if they don't want. All the open standards you want are available on Windows. But no one is using them. There is nothing stopping anyone.

But what's more is that the Linux gaming ecosystem on SteamOS will not be open source and open standards.

Gaming on Linux, even on SteamOS is going to be based around closed source proprietary software. Drivers, DirectX emulation layers, developer middleware, vendor-specific shit from Nvidia and AMD, SteamOS-specific distro stuff by Valve, and of course the games themselves.

Linux gaming is NOT about free and open source software in any way. It uses just as much proprietary closed shit as Windows gaming.

I imagine most of the self-driving cars, assuming they ever take off, are going to be more akin to a regular car with autopilot.

I don't understand why people would not want a free OSS operating system to succeed if just for the added competition.

Well I imagine its because Windows works fine, and if you pirate it it's free too. And even if you don't, at most you only need to really upgrade it every 4 years or so, so it's a minor drop in the bucket cost wise.

That's the big issue with dethroning anything that's had majority market share for decades: You don't really have a chance until the incumbent product does something drastically wrong or just has massive flaws.

Windows doesn't have really have any inherent issues that make it unsuitable or less than optimal for gaming. It's a platform anyone can develop on for free. It has nearly exclusive market share for gaming so a huge potential customer base. It has the best middleware and best game development ecosystem in general. It has the best driver support. It has the most massive back catalog of older games of any gaming platform.

Now are there things Windows can do better? Absolutely, but most of them are irrelevant to gamers. So they don't really stand to gain much from SteamOS.

There's an issue with "encouraging devs to make their titles multi-platform" as well. You see, developers already can barely be fucked to make a WINDOWS port that isn't shit. If the PC platform were to split, we'd get even fewer good ports on our OS of choice whether it be Windows or SteamOS or some other flavor of Linux.

There's just not a lot of reason to get excited unless you're a big time OSS advocate.

The driving in GTA 4 never looked or felt as plastic or arcadey as it does in this game

Well, I don't know about plastic or arcadey, but driving in Watch Dogs hasn't made me throw my controller yet. GTA 4 driving on the other hand was incredibly infuriating to me. I much prefer the Saints Row style.

So a few hours in, I am loving this game. The driving is a little wonky with KB+M especially, but still better than the GTA 4 PC driving for example. The shooting is mediocre as you might expect. I find it's most satisfying to play with a silenced weapon from cover, using the various distraction objects to buy you headshot time.

The city itself is probably the most lively and "real" city that anyone's ever made in an open world game. Traffic can sometimes get pretty dense so driving can be slower than you might be used to in games with less cars. But I imagine you'll get a clear street now and then especially outside of the downtown area.

Uh performance, I don't know. My system is really beefy so even at 2560x1440 with 4x TXAA and everything on Ultra I'm running a steady 60fps. I get the occasional stutter while driving around, maybe once every minute or so.

Beautiful game visually. They really put a lot of detail into the design of the city. All kinds of little touches here and there. They don't feel like copy and paste streets.

Storyline, I don't know so far, I haven't really gotten much into it. Honestly there's so much stuff to run around and do that I'm busy with that.

Police can be annoying. They drive really well compared to other games so they can be hard to lose unless you really take advantage of the hacks. It's often easier to lose them on foot in one of the many odd little nooks and crannies the city has.

Anyway, gonna get back to playing more.
