How does it compare to adjusting something on your dash, reading a book, putting on makeup, turning around to slap at your misbehaving kid, daydreaming, holding a conversation with a passenger, or staring at a roadside advertisement?

Good luck getting rid of all the distractions people have while driving. The biggest distraction, in my experience, is just spacing out. I find myself doing it all the time.

Most people don't like driving, but because of a lack of appropriate public transportation (particularly in the US) they are forced to do so to make a living. Repeatedly driving the same route at the same times of day conditions people to space out and not pay attention. Any repetitive activity that doesn't require a lot of thought does this to humans. Add a pre-existing level of fatigue such as just waking up in the morning, or having just gotten off a hard days work, and the problem becomes even worse.

This major focus on cell phones or other devices rings a bit hollow when the cars themselves come loaded with potential electronic distractions, and when people just find other ways to distract themselves in lieu of a phone.

That law has to change, it is so outdate. I can record you no problem, but if it's voice...problem. Why? Why is one even more damning ok and the other isn't?

No, it's not. Informed consent is important for myriad reasons.

I just don't get why video then isn't. I don't get how one is and the other isn't or neither.

NSA doesn't seem to have issue with audio.

First, ignore Cutter, he's a delusional schizophrenic who thinks he's a lawyer, when in actuality he's a bigger stain on Canada than Bieber.

As to your question, it applies to audio, and not video, because of the wording of most of these laws. They were written to govern the recording of conversations and phone calls, which a video without audio does not do. (Well, unless you're a really good lip reader I suppose, but that's outside the wording of these laws.).

As far as the laws changing, most states already have "one party" consent laws for recording. I.e. as long as you're part of the conversation, you can record it. Other states will probably follow suit soon enough.

There are two issues here with the system they've put in the car.

The first is the obvious one, in some states you cannot record a conversation without the consent of all parties.

The second problem is that you're not present at all. Which means you are not an involved party, and even in "one party" consent states you wouldn't be able to legally record the audio without consent.

But it can be worked around by giving a notification that audio is being recorded. Courts have ruled that if you're told you're being recorded, and continue to speak, that is implied consent. So consent in this case is more of a notification. It's not like you need a written waiver or anything.

For example when you call up Comcast to bitch about your internet sucking for the 50th time this month and it says "Call may be monitored for quality assurance" or whatever, that's how they comply with the recording laws. If you talk after hearing that warning, you're consenting to the conversation being recorded and Comcast or whatever customer service line you're calling is covered legally.

Having a bitch of a time trying to capture ships. Can't even reliably capture a 12 crew gunship in my starter gunship. Got lucky a couple times but still don't have enough scratch for a better ship, and my rank just keeps going up so things are getting tougher.

That's how I felt about it. Haven't had any urges to play it in a long time. It's just boring and, honestly, it lacks any kind of character. It feels incredibly generic.

And then cause the engine to fucking crash.

Yeah. God that engine is so crusty.

I don't understand how the amount of memory they are using could have increased so tremendously, while the games simply don't look any better than older PC games. Is it going to look better than Skyrim did running on a 1GB video card? I highly doubt that it will.

Higher resolution textures, more textures, and less pop-in don't necessarily guarantee a game will look amazing, but it does utilize more memory.

The thing about memory is that having tons of it sitting there empty does you little good. Empty VRAM does not increase your performance. That's memory that could be put to use. I don't know what world you live in where the hallmark of "good programmers" is not taking advantage of the hardware they are presented with.

Hopefully an upgrade to a 970 with my 3570k and 16 gigs of RAM will max this baby

I can't wait for it to ship, so they can start talking about Cyberpunk!

No kidding. I'm way more excited about that than Witcher.

No one even knows what they are arguing about or for anymore. Even here on Blue's trying to follow the conversation is nigh impossible. Are we arguing about sexism? Is it about de-facto censorship? Is it journalistic integrity? Is it global warming? Are CEOs paid too much? Coke vs. Pepsi?

This shit is more fractured and meaningless than Occupy Wall Street. Just another generic excuse for people to voice their favorite tangentially gaming-related gripe and rabble rabble rabble.

Face it, this issue is so muddied that no productive conversation can come out of it. None. It's been tainted, soiled, and ruined by everyone who wants to co-opt the conversation for their own agenda.

When someone becomes a game developer, are they really signing up to be a public figure? Is that the standard we want? Not everyone enjoys that. Again, see: Notch, who sold his game to Microsoft because it had turned him into a public figure and he was getting endless, ill-informed criticism.

Some people clearly seek this out. Others don't, but it happens, anyway. If becoming an artist on some shitty Activision licensed property means that every tweet you ever make will get scrutinized by people you'll never meet, is that something you want, and is that something you want people to consider before deciding to make a game or not?

You can't stop people from saying mean things on the Internet. So if it's going to bother you, then absolutely you should consider whether you want to continue on a career path that makes you into a public figure. It's not fair, a lot of people just want to make stuff without being dragged into the public view. Sometimes the things we want to do come with unintended consequences and trade-offs.

Again, since you can't stop people from saying mean things, you can either ignore them, or you can find a line of work where you don't have to deal with it so much.

Making a big deal of it on gaming news blogs is precisely the one thing you don't want to do. It attracts even more attention, almost all of it negative.

Slapped about an hour and a half into this DLC this morning doing the first couple missions. Good stuff. Kind of more of the same, but T-Bone is a more fun character than Aidan. Definitely worth checking out if you're a season pass holder.

Another one sided anti gamer #Gamergate article with zero fact checking. Add NPR to the SJW publication list.

My favorite part of these articles is always the bit where they trot out the fact that someone got "death or rape threats". As if this actually means anything out of the ordinary. Anyone with any kind of public profile gets threats.

A death threat on the Internet is just some angry teenage miscreant saying the most offensive thing his tiny mind can think up. It's literally just "Shut up I don't like you." dialed up to 11 just because the person is anonymous and can get away with it.

No one is actually coming to kill and/or rape you, dumbasses.

But these indie developer types and wannabe gamer bloggers don't understand this. They had no real public profile, no one was paying attention to them. They don't realize that people saying offensive shit and making toothless threats just comes with the territory of being a public figure, especially a controversial one.

I'm still hoping that Watch Doge 2 will be as big an improvement as AC2 was from AC1. You can do all the play testing you want, but it doesn't really compare to releasing a game, letting millions of people tell you what they think, and iterating on it for the sequel, provided it sells enough to warrant one.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Watch Dogs, as I enjoyed AC1, but its a new property and has plenty of crap that needs to go and plenty of stuff that needs fleshing out.

When was the last time Blizzard created an original game? The last one I believe was Diablo1. Their biggest success (WoW) was basically a rehash/remix of the most popular elements of Dark Age of Camelot & Everquest sheathed into the ever popular Warcraft skin. They make succesful games, hardly original ones though.

There's more to creativity than originality. Some of the best TV shows, movies, music, paintings, stories, or any other form of art are just "rehashes or remixes" of some concept that's been done a dozen, hundred, or thousand times before. Sometimes context and execution is more important than the originality of the concept.

Especially since we have hundreds of years in the history of entertainment, it's getting real hard to find a concept that some idiot can't accuse of being a ripoff or rehash.

WoW is just a ripoff of EverQuest, which is just a MUD with some rudimentary 3D graphics glued on the front end, and MUDs are just computerized versions of pen & paper games which are just gamified versions of centuries old fantasy tropes. Go back far enough and some fucking cell deciding to undergo mitosis was the last original idea.

To spend all those years making something and still not know what it is nor understand what you want it to be. It definitely doesn't paint Blizzard in a positive light.

Nor does it put them in a negative one.

This isn't the first time they have had a project simmering for awhile and then canned it. The exact thing happened with that Warcraft adventure game they were working on forever, and the Starcraft Ghost game. They've had several other unannounced titles in development and then canned them.

Companies with money can afford to do this.

So you're saying that their history of cancelling games isn't a reflection of the company itself? Having the money to afford making mistakes is fine, but that doesn't dismiss that the mistakes were made in the first place.

Also, this seems a little different. Maybe I'm wrong here, but I expected that "Titan" was a pretty big deal for them. Maybe it wasn't, though. Maybe they were all satisfied with building on WoW, and Titan was nothing more than a side project.

I don't know. All I know is that having a history of development blunders that lead to cancellations isn't a good thing. Especially from a company that I would argue suffers from a lack of creativity.

Most companies have products that never take off or never fully get off the drawing board. It's part of doing business. The only difference is that in the gaming industry, your studio usually crumbles after the first failed product launch because you had to go all-in to attempt to ship it.

Blizzard had a few guys working on the early stages of an unannounced project. They hardly bet the company on Titan.

If a business is surviving those failed projects, then that's a healthy business. It means they aren't over-investing in experimental projects.

You say Blizzard "suffers from a lack of creativity" but then in the same breath try to paint them as foolish for experimenting with something that didn't end up working out. Which is it?
