Working in the video game industry is not automatically a poor security job where you might lose it at any moment. You just have to work for the one place where that would never happen. A place where you could freely adjust your workload and switch projects at will if you had something (personal or medical or anything) going on. A place where even if you are out for a very long extended period dealing with something like say medical problems, you'd still have your job when you were ready for it.

Valve

Yep, there are very few choices in the games industry if you care about job security. Fortunately, they are easy to spot. First, you have to avoid any studio without history. Too many unknowns. It might be the next Valve, or it could be the next to be chewed up and spat out by EA. Second, you want to avoid studios that are a subsidiary of a parent company known for closing studios. Again, EA is the best example here. Lastly, you want to check Google for news of layoffs in the last 5 years at that company.

If the company has been around a while and hasn't been known to do a mass layoff after shipping a title, that's where you want to work. Go bag groceries and work on some personal dev projects to bulk up your portfolio while you suck dick to get your foot in the door. Don't just take the first gaming startup job offer you get. It's worth suffering for a while to get a job you can be proud of.

Of course if you're fortunate/unfortunate enough to have a family, you might not have that luxury. In which case you should go to work for Google or some other big company that isn't at risk of going under. It's not games development, but it'll give your family stability and peace of mind.

A lot of the criticism seems to be like "WHY IS IT ALWAYS RAPE THAT A WOMAN HAS TO DEAL WITH?" From idiots who don't seem to have looked at anything else about the game: Lara gets faced with just about every imaginable challenge. That's the whole point of the game. What fire forged this badass?

Something sounds very wrong with this story. I want to know why Atlas hadn't collected from 38 in 6 months. I don't know of any company that would let such a large bill slide that long. How could that not come to anyone's attention? Had 38 refused or even stalled they would have sent notice to the employees long before a final 10 day notice. And a 45 page moving contract? I find that highly unlikely. And Curt was entirely unaware of ANY of this??? Someone is either exaggerating or lying outright here. Several things about all of this are very rotten. I won't be surprised at all to find criminal wrongdoing here.

Not overly uncommon to have businesses behind on bills, especially for services rendered that don't need to be repeated. 6 months is a lot, but if Atlas assumed it would get paid they may not have forced it, at least for a few months, and when they got nowhere they apparently turned to the person they moved.

It all reeks of poor management, mismanagement, bad decisions, etc., but none of that is criminal wrongdoing. There's been zero sign of fraud or any other financial crime on 38s part, just a whole lot of bad decisions and broken contracts.

Could something surface? Sure. But nothing here is unusual. Companies implode daily. Employees and creditors don't get told until the day of regularly. I know people that have shown up to work and found the locks changed overnight. It's shitty and it sucks but it isn't criminal. Hell, changed locks often mean management was working as long as possible to find a way to keep it afloat (though they should have given up sooner to give employees a chance to move on.)

Seems like not paying them their wages should be criminal.

Employees who are not being paid, in most states, are free to quit for good cause and can still collect unemployment while seeking another job. Companies go belly up. If it was illegal for your company to fail, that would just be silly.

This isn't really as complicated or mysterious a situation as people seem to make it out to be. Schilling overreached and the company folded. You win some, you lose some.

In the process, bills went unpaid in favor of paying other bills in hopes of finding an investor, and it didn't happen. And employees were not kept in the loop regarding the ongoing troubles. To be quite honest, employees are RARELY kept in the loop about the big behind the scenes financial difficulties. Depending on the organization, rumors may float around, but not always.

It's quite common for a company to collapse and employee's various benefits and perks to be thrown into chaos.

As a programmer myself, I'm sorry to see these people get boned like this, but there's really nothing out of the ordinary going on here. The only thing that makes this notable is the oddity of having state funds contributing to a game development house.

The fact that we haven't heard anything about hookers and blow from bitter ex-employees probably means there's nothing to be found. When you screw your employees over, the dirty laundry comes out really quickly. But we haven't really heard of any...

They have a solid game on their hands, it's just sad the company running it appears to be 1 fry short of a happy meal.

It's not the miracle game some were expecting it to be, but I agree that it has a solid base for being something pretty good if they stop losing subscribers right now. Just a shame it couldnt keep me engrossed long enough for me to see it. Maybe I'll head back and check it out later this year.

The problem is that there is a tipping point on subscriber loss. Eventually losings subscribers becomes reason enough for more subscribers to leave and it just snowballs from there. They need to really up the ante on this server transfer/merge stuff ASAP or they won't be able to keep enough subs to give the game the attention it needs.

They need to merge servers, plain and simple. Allowing people to leave low population ones and go to higher population ones does not solve anything, it just makes the problem worse. Now you're left with even MORE low population servers than before. Get it yet?!

Precisely. You can't take 100 nearly-empty glasses of water and somehow move the water around so that everyone is happy without ever emptying a glass completely.

I don't think BioWare understands the situation on their own game. Frankly, I'm a bit confused as to how they could be oblivious to a situation that is readily apparent even from an end-user standpoint.

Namely, the situation is that they have too many servers. No matter how they move people around, they will never ensure a healthy population on all servers.

They need to decrease the total number of servers with merges. I realize that's got some player inconvenience factors such as picking new names for themselves and their guild, but it's a hell of a lot better than living in a ghost town.

SWTOR has not had as successful a launch as BioWare hoped for, for sure, but they still had a decent number of subscribers. I doubt that's the case anymore. They waited too long and people got sick of playing on empty servers.

There were plenty of people who liked this game. Not as many as BioWare wanted, but they were there and simply did not want to play it by themselves. But BioWare couldn't get their act together quickly enough and it probably cost them an IMMENSE number of subscribers even beyond the huge drop we saw when the MMO-of-the-week crowd left.

The pots were the #1 spot for botting. You don't have to kill anything to get there, and there are no enemies in the area. You could make 40k+ gold in an hour doing nothing other than breaking pots totally unimpeded.

Oh no! 40k! We must stamp that out immediately. In two weeks, you might be able to buy a piece of gear.

Anyway, this is no surprise. Blizzard's been on a nerf spree since the game launched. They watch the Youtube channels and Reddit to see if anyone has any tricks or strategies for accomplishing anything, and then they nerf the shit out of it. The idea is that they want to funnel people into the Real Money Auction House out of necessity. If people can sustain themselves simply by playing the game, the usage of the RMAH will be lower and Blizzard will collect fewer fees.

Mr. Tact wrote on Jun 6, 2012, 08:07:
I never understood why Blizzard was so resistant to making skills dual functional. ie... Skill #1 does X against mobs, but does Y against other players. Many PvP balance issues resulted from adjustments made due to PvE problems.

I guess I can understand they want skill #1 to work the same for consistency's sake, but it was clear long ago that dual functionality was what they really need.

It's kind of a one-way street. Once you go beyond a few token changes (CC duration for example), the divergence between the PvE and PvP playstyle of a class becomes unmanageable. You're suddenly doing twice the class design work, and the players have an indecipherable clusterfuck to try and figure out.

If you can't figure out how to design reasonably balanced PvP without splitting a class in two, you're incompetent.

That said, PvPers complain about balance. It's who they are. It's what they do. The more balanced your game is, the larger the small balance problems are perceived to be. Anyway, The best PvP MMOs have always had a lot of imbalance and overpowered crap. It adds character and style. Ultima Online and DAOC were notorious for FOTM and cheesetastic PvP, but they were still immensely enjoyable.

I laugh when people call WoW PvP unbalanced, because in reality its one of the most homogenized and watered down PvP experiences you can find. Once every few months there'll be something a bit overpowered to play with for a little bit, but it quickly gets hammered back into compliance.

I've always felt that balanced PvP was a good fit for shooters where the focus is on personal skill, and more imbalanced and chaotic PvP was a good fit for RPGs, where a lot of the focus is on metagaming. Both have their place IMHO.

I just unlocked Inferno yesterday and the game instantly went from awesome to pure SUCK!
I have very good gear, lots of HP for a wizard, but there is no chance completing even act 1. People already have adapted. They dont play Inferno much, and if its being played, a few areas are being farmed, by avoiding mobs and running to chests and stuff.

Yeah, better gear will prolly change that, but I wont farm act 1 or Hell act 3 & 4 until I have 20 million to buy proper gear.
I feel like Im going to stop playing soon, because this is not fun.

repeat after me, HP is the least important stat in inferno.

Yeah, especially if the servers lag so much that you cant avoid getting hit, even as a wizard. Also you have to kite the elites all the time (which is another joke) and in tight quarters its even more impossible to avoid getting hit.

Ive seen people like you who run around with 17k HP in Inferno and die every second. Yes, very much fun indeed and so unimportant!

There's a certain level of Effective HP you should reach (Effective HP being HP modified by your resist and armor values), but the thing is that in Act 4 and to a lesser extent Act 3, survivability is not attainable. You WILL get ripped apart, regardless of your gear, if some mobs get near you.

The best defense in the later Acts is a good offense. You can't tank them anyway, so beyond a basic level of HP and resistance, you'd be stupid to even try. Without solid DPS and a reasonable kiting spec you will hit the enrage timers on the elite/champion packs and you will die.

What he should have said is that vitality whoring is a bad idea. You need some level of resists, and you need excellent DPS. Balanced stats are both more effective, and cheaper to obtain.
