What's fueling GamerGate?

Annoyance at articles like this one.

It's a significantly better article than some of the shit we've been subjected to. He at least gets it, to some extent.

He's right about one thing: It IS about losing control of our hobby. The AAA industry is slowly turning into an industry of sanitized casual shovelware titles as core gamers are replaced in the market by people who don't even consider themselves to be gamers. The indie part of the industry is being subverted by a corrupt gaming press that realizes it has more power over indies than it does over mainstream publishers.

I know for me it's very frustrating. I've always tried to stay positive about the direction of the industry. Coming from a small, rainy town with not much else going on, gaming has been my go-to hobby since I could pick up an NES controller.

I look around and see gaming slowly being changed. It wasn't Jack Thompson or the government who ultimately did it, but rather a flood of consumers with no long term financial or emotional investment in the hobby who decided "Hey this looks nice, lets take it away from them and make it our own." Gaming press have replaced their staff of lifelong gamers with people who barely understand games and who, just a few years ago, had probably never picked up a video game.

It's not a singular agenda being pushed. It's not some feminist conspiracy. Those are all just symptoms of the real problem:

Gamers are being pushed out of gaming.

'Gamergate’: Feminist video game critic Anita Sarkeesian cancels Utah lecture after threat
It is ridiculous that this is associated in anyway with anyone who supports #gamersgate without a shred of evidence. I think the whole #gamergate thing is kinda dumb, but it is the height of unprofessional behavior to associate a movement with a death threat with zero evidence.

Yeah it's really sad. You can't do anything anymore without someone associating your entire thing with some fringe psychopaths in order to assassinate it. That's always been a strategy, but it's never been easier than it is today.

The press is immune to scrutiny because they control the narrative. There's nothing that can be done.

So far I haven't seen anyone caught for any of these threats, so it's quite likely they are being fabricated or sending them to themselves. There is a clear financial motive to do so.

While that's possible, and similar stuff has certainly happened before, I wouldn't take the lack of anyone getting caught as proof.

The majority of threats that public figures receive are never seriously looked into. There's just not enough time and resources in the world to parse it all, and it's extremely difficult to find people who've used any level of caution when sending their threats. The ones that people feel are more serious can be sent along to the FBI. The FBI actually has experts that are pretty good about telling a credible threat from some asshole just saying shit to be an asshole. I don't know exactly how they determine this.

From the article

”They determined the threat seems to be consistent with ones (Sarkeesian) has received at other places around the nation,” he told the Standard-Examiner. “The threat we received is not out of the norm for (this woman).”

Games journalists like to make a big deal of it like they are special snowflakes, but the truth is that these threats aren't really out of the ordinary for anyone who speaks publicly and profusely about any remotely controversial topic. Most know this, and don't say anything about it. They know that the threats aren't serious, and they know the goal is to scare them, not to hurt them. So they don't get scared. They don't give the shitheads what they want.

But even with actual threats that aren't PR false flags, people are rarely caught. So don't take that as proof in itself.

Don't really know how they'll do Civil War in MCU. Stark's MCU persona isn't really one to play ball with the government.

Based on the update, looks like Dropbox wasn't hacked, but rather it's one of those big lists of usernames and passwords lifted from other sources that you can use to get into other services like Dropbox because of people using the same password all over the place and/or not using two-factor because they think it's 1983 and passwords still protect you.

Are these native ports? OR just preconfigured Dosbox / Wine emulated?

Not sure, but if I had to guess I'd say that native ports are unlikely. Native ports of such old titles would require a fair bit of work to get them up to snuff on running on new machines, and since you obviously don't need the speed advantage of native code for these titles, it would be kind of a waste of time and resources to port them.

Probably a DOSBox or Wine type thing as you said.

EDIT: Baldur's Gate requirements say it's a Wine game.

Did you really just post this? This is like cringe-worthy levels of pretentious douchebaggery. You might as well have just called it shallow and pedantic while tipping your fucking fedora.

Yeah, because we want to escalate the situation, encourage more death threats and women fleeing their homes just to make GamerGate look bad. You're a fucking genius.

Pretty easy to act the internet tough guy when it's not you that's being threatened.

I've been doxxed and threatened before. Didn't bother me none. Nobody gives enough of a fuck about me to risk their freedom or their life trying to fuck with me.

Here's the thing, there's literally zero difference between me calling you names and me sending you death threats. It's just a difference sequence of keys on the keyboard. Both are utterly meaningless. Anonymous trolls like to crank everything up to 11. There hasn't been a single report of anyone actually showing up to these peoples homes to do anything, nor a single report of the authorities busting anyone.

Any remotely public figure who says anything remotely controversial gets death threats. That's just how it is. Some people are assholes and say asshole things.Call me when someone actually gets arrested for creeping outside one of these peoples homes. Until then, it's just more disgusting troll filth, no different from any other.

They are enabling these morons by giving them attention and running from home. They never get caught. It's very easy to say some shit on the Internet in a way that you are effectively impossible to find. They get to giggle with sick joy at all the attention they are receiving, and it encourages copycats.

There is literally no good that can come from broadcasting this shit over the Internet.

Question for Bluesers: when was the last time you spent money on this project? I'm just wondering who is driving this and why.

I bought in for like 50 or 60 bucks or something pretty early on, haven't purchased anything additional since. I cannot fathom why people would want anything more than just a decent starter ship, seeing as how you'll be able to get it all in-game.

What users want to change about windows 10 TP.

I'd hope the first thing is the keylogger... Sadly it isn't.

They are probably looking for feedback on what they are actually going to release, not feedback on their tech preview metrics. Your inference that somehow Windows 10 release version is going to be keylogging everyone is really dishonest.

That's not what I was inferring. I said "I hope the first thing is the keylogger" (that they want changed), then I read the article, and no, the keylogger isn't the thing that people are wanting changed, so I said "Sadly it isn't."

Never did I mention the word "release version" anywhere, you just inferred that yourself.

Why would you be disappointed? Why would that be the first thing people complain about? People opting in to the tech preview should already be aware that there is extensive data collection that goes on that isn't representative of the final product. Not only because that's how it's been before, but because Microsoft discloses this on their site. They have no reason to complain about something that won't be in the final version. The whole reason they are using the tech preview is to give useful feedback on stuff that may not change unless they bring it up.

The only reason I can think of for you to be bothered by this is if you somehow believe that the keylogging and other things will remain in for release.

A lot of people who use their phone excessively have very active social lives, seeing as how phones are an ever larger part of coordinating and enabling peoples social interaction.

I'd be more worried about someones life who didn't even own a cell phone. They probably don't leave home much.
