Cutter wrote on Apr 27, 2013, 21:34: Yeah, call the tips number or local authorities if you have any actual, real information, otherwise shut-up. Jesus, you know how irresponsible and dangerous it is to accuse people of crimes they didn't commit? What's wrong with you?
If people think there is any chance of getting into trouble or getting sued, they will stop helping at all, even in a useful non-accusatory way. Look at China where no one will even help a dying toddler out of the road because of fear of a lawsuit.
I just think it's stupid to expect professional standards out of Joe Citizen just trying to help, let alone punish them for not living up to those standards. All you'll do is discourage public involvement entirely.
No, we don't want people making false accusations, but that burden of proof isn't on the person trying to help. Frankly, they aren't in a position to know for sure whether the information will be useful to the authorities. It's better to tell them something that doesn't check out, then hold on to something that could have been used to save lives.
It's on the press and the police to handle it in a way that doesn't shit all over someones name and life. They are idiots for running with unsourced information from random fucktards on the Internet.
Besides, this is a weird corner case. We wouldn't even know this guys name if he hadn't already been missing, which lended credibility to the accusations. If it had been someone who was actually around and the cops could have talked to right away, his name probably wouldn't have even gotten around. |

Not sure I agree, considering you need a press badge to get into E3, it's significantly less accessible. E3 is dead. PAX is already way better than E3 ever was, and it's still fairly new. It's also got about twice the attendance of E3, so venue size doesn't seem to be the issue.

It may be a shitty and unfair work experience, but it's not like they are coming out of it with a ruined back, ruined knees, and a lung disorder. |

Cutter wrote on Apr 24, 2013, 21:56: Let's see how the games turn out, Brian, before declaring this a permanent new model. Don't forget we're just seeing the beginning of all this. As projects fail, don't live up to expectation, people are scammed, and general Kickstarter fatigue sets in this model may not last, or at least be viable for most. I know I'm getting sick of seeing fat cats who can afford to do their own stuff standing around with their hat in hand. And for every one good project there's 100 bad ones to wade through and that will only get worse as time progresses. Yeah, I think ol' Bri is jumping the gun somewhat here.
I don't really see people going "I've gotten slightly raped for $15 once in a while doing these Kickstarter type projects, might as well go back to getting brutally violated for $60 from the mainstream publishers." |

If so, I'd go so far as to say I couldn't trust them for any future projects... It's mention in the pitch video (@1:55) that they had to get a license (not MS specifically), as well as the front page:
The game we want to make is very humble by modern blockbuster game standards but it is still way beyond the ability of a small start-up to fund by itself. The restraints on the license from Microsoft made it impossible to get established publishers interested in Shadowrun and so it remained just a dream for a long time until Jordan saw the recent successes of some other veteran designers on Kickstarter.
Also mentioned in Update 41 So basically this stuff has been known from the start, if you read what they posted on KS. So people are bitching about nothing. They are delivering what they said they would deliver, and if for some strange reason you still feel cheated, you can get a refund.
What the hell is the problem? Apparently people would rather have no game at all than have to deal with some licensing oddities. |

They pretty much explained it: They didn't know what strings would be attached until very recently, long after their Kickstarter concluded. And they are willing to refund anyone who has a concern about it, by the way. |

| Why would Microsoft care if the game had DRM? They aren't publishing the title, most likely have already been paid their licensing fee, and have no stake in how many copies it sells. We need to kick the lawyers out of this industry. |

Steele Johnson wrote on Apr 9, 2013, 15:34: Look at a company like Comcast. I think they hold a world record for the most BBB complaints against them, yet their prices still go up by nickle-and-diming the consumer and they laugh all the way to the bank. The thing people need to realize that sets EA apart from Comcast, or Bank of America, or AT&T, etc. is that EA doesn't lock you into a contract, it doesn't provide an essential service you can't do without, and so on.
So people have EVERY opportunity to tell EA to fuck off, yet they choose not to. Which is why the "Worst Company in America" label is some bullshit. If they are the worst, why the fuck do these people keep giving them money? They aren't locked into a contract ala AT&T, they don't have a mortgage from EA ala Bank of America. They aren't the only provider of games or internet in their area, ala Comcast and cable.
With the exception of MAYBE some of the sports titles, in no way does EA have people by the balls, yet they continue to buy their product. When EA says "We dont give a fuck, because we're making fistfuls of money." they are absolutely on point. If people really thought they were the worst company in America, then people wouldn't be giving them money.
Stop paying them you idiots. Slapping them with one hand, and giving them a phat roll of cash with the other isn't sending the message you think it is sending. |

On the other hand I don't want to see them pushed into a financial corner and hop on the derivative "dudebro" train to get out of it. Or heaven forbid stop using Steamworks. That's the scariest part. Square Enix may not hit it out of the park with every title, but at least they aren't a shovelware publisher. If they set themselves unreasonable expectations, they may go, "If you can't beat em, join em!" which is the wrong attitude to have. |
