On the other hand I don't want to see them pushed into a financial corner and hop on the derivative "dudebro" train to get out of it. Or heaven forbid stop using Steamworks. That's the scariest part. Square Enix may not hit it out of the park with every title, but at least they aren't a shovelware publisher. If they set themselves unreasonable expectations, they may go, "If you can't beat em, join em!" which is the wrong attitude to have. |

Whoever is doing their sales projections needs to be shot. Those numbers are not realistic and all those high projections do is turn reasonable success into disappointment.

I know people bitched about the boss fights... but the game wasn't about the boss fights as far as I was concerned, so I was able to enjoy the title for what it was. The fact that people's biggest complaint was the boss fights is really what cements how good a game DXHR is IMHO. What would be unremarkable and par for the course for any other game actually stands out like a sore thumb in an otherwise really fucking good game. The boss fights feel like the guys went out for drinks and left their little brothers, cousins, and nephews in charge of development for a night and the boss battles is what resulted. |

ASeven wrote on Apr 6, 2013, 14:54: And here's a great rebuttal from an actual girl. Shock, horror! Kind of a weak video. Points out flaws in that other video, but without putting forth any kind of solution, or even addressing whether or not there's an issue.
It's like a procedural critique rather than an actual counter-point. This girl never claims that there is, or isn't an issue that needs correcting. She also falls into the same trap as Anita Sarkeesian by focusing too much on two specific characters.
That's why point-by-point rebuttals are argumentatively weak. They miss the big picture. She didn't actually put forth any evidence that says that Anita is barking up the wrong tree, just that her arguments were not that strong. But neither are this girls. She gets her point across in an eloquent manner, but she doesn't actually make that strong of a point to begin with.
It's really a simple issue anyway. There isn't any overt, intentional sexism going on. It's just a lack of imagination. White male heterosexual game developers are going to make games that appeal to, and are largely about, white male heterosexual protagonists. That's who they identify strongest with, and who will first come to mind when creating a character. They have no motivation to create anything else, since no one is calling for a change.
As far as the Damsel in Distress goes, again, it's not sexism but lack of imagination. Games in general don't stray from the basic story tropes of yesteryear. The Damsel in Distress, the Mad Scientist, the Kid Hero, the Supervillain with no real motivations other than just being the best villain he can be. That many of these tropes are sexist is coincidental.
Now, that's not to say there isn't an issue here. But the issue isn't intentional sexism, it's boring cliche writing.
But the issue IS something that warrants some change: The industry shouldn't branch out to appease feminists. They should branch out to attract more customers. They've hit the cap on white male heterosexuals 18-35. It's time to maybe think about expanding their customer base instead of continually milking the rest of us for more and more cash.

These videos exist to drive hype by invoking emotion in the general populous, not to showcase the game to educated consumers. In short, they are there to say "This game exists." not to say "This game is good."
And it works. |

Seems to me like this party was a blast ^^ Ignore the usual fembot trashtalk. It starts to get really annoying to have this nonsense every single god damn time there is any kind of party gathering for a 99% male demographic. Bah!
I really don't get what the boohoo is with this. Did they offer sex? No? Then topic over and closed. If some dudes can't handle women that talk to them that is not Notches fault, as much as I hate defending him. The real funny thing is, if memory serves, the person at Mojang who organizes all their event shit, and would be in charge of hiring hookers if that was indeed done, is a woman. |

It's about distributing risk, genius. Some guy invests all his money into a project and it fails, he ends up ruined. Some guy invests $15 from a bunch of other people into a project and it fails, no one person is overly burdened.
It's just like more traditional business investments. People give money knowing they may lose out in the end, but since the risk is shouldered by a large number of people, an unacceptable risk becomes an acceptable one.
The whole point of crowdfunding for games is to allow people to take on risky projects they wouldn't otherwise undertake.
It just makes no sense to tell a potential game developer "Sorry, but YOU aren't allowed to take this less risky path to make your risky game. You have to clean out your kids' college fund." That doesn't get us the games made that we want. He'll say 'Fuck it' to the crowd funding concept and just go back to shilling for EA or something, and whatever awesome idea he had for a game probably gets turned into the next EA abomination. |

All games should be crowd-funded. I don't want the traditional publisher business model to exist at all. It stifles creativity.
I don't understand you people who think crowdfunding should be used to get your company off the ground just so that you can sell out. It needs to be THE business model. You guys need to stop thinking about it like it's charity or welfare to be reserved for the needy.
The whole attitude where "Hey you have X amount of money therefore you should be required to gamble all of it instead of making your case to crowdfunders." makes not one bit of god damn sense.
Plus I think it should be up to ME to decide what I want to fund. Arbitrary restrictions based on some vague estimate of someone's non-crowdfunding resources will just fracture the crowdfunding community and reduce the visibility of any single project. |

Iteration? Iteration motherfucker? So explain to me how the fuck you iterated from DiabloII to this goddamn mess.... Do you really need an explanation? 12 years in development never makes a good game. It doesn't give you time to perfect an idea, it gives you time to completely forget the reason you started. Thats not an explanation. Thats an excuse. It doesn't excuse anything, so how can it be an excuse? It's not like the game being 12 years in development somehow absolves them of blame. On the contrary, that's all their fault.
It's like anything else. Too short a time in the oven, it's undercooked and inedible. Too long in the oven, and it's charcoal barely recognizable as food (Diablo 3).
That's not an excuse, just a truth applicable to just about any creative endeavor. If you can't see how 12 years of iteration can iterate away all that's good in a project, I don't know what to tell you. Look at what's happened to 9 years of iterating on World of Warcraft. All the little tiny changes they made that seemed ok at the time snowballed into making the game a shadow of its former self.
The same thing happened to Diablo 3. Due to their infinite supply of money, hookers, and blow, Blizzard simply wasn't under any pressure to perform, and they got lazy and stupid.
