News Comments > Blizzard Sues Over DOTA TM
19. Re: Blizzard Sues Over DOTA TM Feb 10, 2012, 11:09 RenownWolf

Only the lawyers will win... glad I'm married to one!

Also Valve has 2 people who worked one it, the first one who made it "Allstars" and the current maintainer. Icefrog and Eul or something (their names mean nothing to me).

There is a company called Dota Allstars LLC or similar that owns the Defense of the Ancients trademark that was done back around 2005 or similar. It is currently owned by Blizzard (they bought the company from somebody who also had a lot to do with the Dota allstars website).

It's a big fkin mess, and the easiest thing would be if Valve avoided the name... Blizzard does have a right on some level but at the same time they don't. Valve put their hand in the cookie jar and wanted to paint their name on it.

The Blizzard EULA also has something about mods and ownership... but I haven't seen it to comment on that.

As I started... the lawyers will win and the gamers will come away knowing that both wasted time and money and should have avoided the situation in the first place.

Should they have to? Nope. Movie companies only do it to boast to other movie companies. Game developers don't seem to care to share.

They are allowed to spend their money as they see fit. Just like any other business (within the confines or legal business practices and requirements for shareholders if a corp.)

Young Einon: The peasants are revolting.
Brok: They've always been revolting, Prince. But now they're rebelling.

I love the word revolting since hearing this.

The Dubstep video sounds like shit, and is overly loud... Guess that makes it accurate!

I'm not even old and it sounds like ass. Yes I listen to various types of music, except country and now dubstep.

Ultraviolet (uvvu.com) is beginning to look a lot like "steam for movies" albeit with slightly more restrictive DRM. They're getting there... 10 years and a few dozen billion dollars after the pirates.

Site is dead weight, doesn't support anywhere but USA.

Alas, I'll stick to downloading my tv shows/movies then. Waiting 6 months to a year to buy the dvd/blu ray in Australia is a joke. Even worse for TV series being released.

One day... I can pay for the things I like and I do buy some now, when they decide to make them available, but if you make us wait too long... we tend to forget it.

Silvanus I'll take one. I applied for beta and no luck.

I got beta invites galore years back, I even submit bug reports and all but this last year... nothing, nada!

So if you're keen to share I'd love it =)

Just email me via blues profile stuff =)

I do not seeing this hitting the popularity that Minecraft did.

Reminds me of Stardock doing so well with Sins and then failing with their next few products (especially their latest game).

Greatly interested to see what level of success the game gains, but I am not interested in playing it really. Maybe try it, but doubtful.

Eh Why not, I'm lightassassin in the friends list, and lightmonkey is the account on steam if you still have it MrGosser, Cheers in advance. I have no idea which name is of importance???

From what I've seen on the streams it looks just like Dota with fancy graphics. Curious to see how it runs.

Sounds like a group of people who have no idea how to manage themselves. I think they are in over their heads and should get somebody to be their business manager and PR person because they are awful at it.

They screwed up, and have done before (paypal issues and they were at fault, google checkout again with them at fault, and webhosting issues because they are too cheap). They talk about getting all these preorders and then complain about how expensive things are. By god did they do any budgeting, cost analysis or even simply check the price and requirements of what they need?

Not backing up was retarded on their behalf, and after people put their faith and prepaid for the game, they deserve the harsh words they are getting.

They claimed they had enough for 6 months development time from pre-orders, and then complain they don't have enough for their servers and everything associated with keeping them running. CDN setups are cheap via the big providers... this whole thing just appears so amateur.

All I can imagine from this is when Dr Evil asks for money in Austin powers "One Million Dollars" and it cuts to the scene and everybody is balling their eyes out laughing!

10 Million pre-orders *pinky to mouth*

This is the same guy who was called out for being a "asshole" as many said in regards to his management practices.

No doubt many believed they would get paid because the game was commercially successful. Shame... it's the guys who actually do the work that get done over the most when the failure is at the top.

Number 9 scares me the most. I've seen it many times and it sucks when the dead body moves and shoots again.... you think it's dead, and it's hitboxes are on the ground.

The answer they gave reminds me of how they were going to fix the "wrong team color" bug in previous battlefield games that never got fixed from bf1942 thru to bf2142 ffs!

Wow... can't believe what I just read.

I'd love for John to head on over to Australia, I'd even fly to another city here it meant I'd get to meet him.

He isn't perfect, but nobody is. He's a smart guy and gets my respect.

Anyway, glad you said something blue =) Some posts on here boggle the mind at how vindictive and vicious they are and I'm sure everybody will appreciate a little hand smacking.

Raid finder: designed for the casual players only. The purpose of this system is to let the casual players easily find a raid group and enjoy it with the dungeon-finder system. The difficulty will be easier than the normal raid, and the loots will be less powerful. The difficulty of using raid-finder will be easier like: bosses have less HP, complicated mechanics removed, damage to player lowered.

I always wondered how they would do a random raid finder. No matter how easy they make it though there will still be mass wipes and rage quitting lol.

This looks perfect for a few people I know who have quit. Though as you stated rage quitting would be an issue. Simplest solutions would be let everybody respawn inside the raid at checkpoints (short distance, easy to try again) and/or no locks to certain raid groups. **edit: the locks may not apply to the normal raids, but having any lock will cause issues. People need to get over the free loot bs, as this would be a better way to train others into getting ready for a raid/team work on a bigger scale environment. **

Wow is at such a point they need to learn from their Diablo settings with regards to their loot/difficulty. Hardcore... only get 10 deaths in their lifetime? *shrugs*

He mentioned this some time ago too (earlier this year, late last) and mentioned that only high level gamers would notice 60-120fps, but he does admit the difference is there.

For hardcore gamers it means something, for the others, not so much...

As far as PvP balance goes, what difference does it make if you spend 3 weeks farming the best gear, or 12 minutes buying it?
Balance is based on gear+skill v's gear+skill.
Where that gear comes from is completely irrelevant.

Assuming they use a ranked match type scenario, then you're not going to get ranks with gear alone, and it could well see the people that are buying gear never make the top of the list due to missing the skill component.

You must not have played World of Warcraft Arena PVP then.... top levels skill is what really matters, but there are massive swings on the lower tiers of those who have the best items vs those you just have normal ones (ie, pvp only gear vs pvp mixed with specialised pve gear).

I don't really care about the spending real money as I have no intention, but don't expect it will be balanced. And expect that the hardcore PVP gamers will just buy their gear to get ahead, that's what they do to be the best.

On the note of MS and their methods with XBLA, it appears from reports (they can't say directly, NDA/Contracts) that they changed their percentage from 30% to around 70% and that it applies to everybody (AAA or indie).

MS know they have a very popular online setup and are slowly beginning to abuse it. I understand that platform holders don't want complete freedom, but at the same time when their restrictions go beyond belief that is when developers find alternatives and use their platforms as afterthoughts.

I don't like Team Meat but MS are being rather disappointing recently.
