This is about much more than in game ads. Think about it for a minute. This IS about tracking your actions.
If they merely wanted to create income through in game ads, all they had to of done is sign direct contracts with the producers of
specific products and place static ads in the game prior to release. For christ's sake, it's Quake Wars: Enemy Territory, the most anticipated
game of 2007. Image how much Intel wants an ad included, imagine the bidding war that would transpire between coke and pepsi. They wouldn't even
need a middle man to create the deal.
But that's not what they did. They included a system which places active advertising in the game, advertising which tracks which ad you are
viewing, the angle you viewed it from, and how long you viewed it. All completely unneccesary to accomplish the objective.
What is really happening is they realize that most pc gamers watch less and less TV, go to movies less frequently, etc. In other words pc gamers
tune out the outside world, particularly when gaming. That drives the advertising execs mad so they had to find a way to stick it in our faces.
Why does it have to be actively served ads that monitor if I view them, when, and how. Why does it have to use my cpu cycles, my bandwidth?
Don't we already have enough performance problems, random crashes, and bugs in the PC world? Do we need to add more code, code that doesn't
serve to enhance user experience in any way?
Dirt looks awesome, but it's starforce infected. Now I guess I'll have to skip QW just like I did 2142. Only diff is, I really want dirt and QW
so I have to spite myself.
