Had high hopes for this game, but the interface, sluggish command controls and lack of any kind of custom squad kitting really put a damper on it.
Oh well, I can wait for the next one to come along. |

| Decided to try it again. Haven't been in for well over a year.. guild is shut down, servers are being merged, the place is a ghost ocean. Not surprising, I guess, given the shallowness of the gameplay. |

Oh, I didn't realise my post was speaking only about competition between MMOs, and actually had nothing at all to do with cautioning against using an individual game's launch to predict its longevity in the absence of other factors.
Everyone should have an Overon filter. It's so nice to be told what I meant to post.
Hey, at least you didn't accuse me of being a Cryptic shill. Was half expecting that here. |

WOW and the other current popular MMO's weren't competing with everquest three weeks into its launch back on March 1999 like they are with star trek online. From the singular perspective that I explicitly mentioned (the post is still there if you care to actually read all of it someday), it is a perfectly valid analogy. Rocky launches don't have much to do with game quality in the long run, nor are they reliable indicators of impending total failure. |

| That seems to be the norm rather than the exception to MMO launches. I don't have any desire to play STO or any other MMO for that matter, but saying "rocky launch = fail" is really just wishful thinking. EQ is still paying for itself after all these years, and it wasn't even playable for three weeks. |

I really hate acronym reuse for games. For a few seconds I was wondering why the hell y'all were talking about Asheron's Call 2. |

Oh, you mean that new show that uses the Doctor Who name? Never mind... Tennant seemed okay, but the "new" shows never made much of a point. A dinosaur, Ray
While the actors have done a great job in the new shows (and there have been a few excellent scripts and stories), it seems to me that they're focusing more on how zany and wacky he can be. I like the new series, but rewatching all the old eps in order (just finished Sun Makers), I see NewWho lacks a certain quality that the old shows had.
I doubt they could properly do a good Doctor Who computer game. It just doesn't really translate from the original medium. Even the book adaptations aren't as good.
But then again, at one point everyone said that about Lord of the Rings too. |

This will be delayed until 2011. To fall in competition with SW:TOR. LOL, suggesting that WoW needs to compete with something else. Part of me was very suspicious of the timing of WAR and WOTLK. WAR really didn't get a chance to take off before the Blizzard Juggernaught rolled right on over it. I still say that Mythic should have delayed a couple of months to let people get WOW fever out of their system rather than let themselves get steamrolled. WAR just didn't have enough meat on its bones to be viable at any time, Lich King or no. |

| The main difference in the canon is (I think) that disruptors are more powerful but don't have a stun setting. Don't know how they stack up in the MMO. |

We need a Game Designer Simulator. Build a game within a game.
Shortly thereafter someone will design a game simulator within the game simulator and collapse a black hole somewhere. |

I still think a game set during Korea would have merit. Really? Most of the ground war in Korea was a trench warfare stalemate, which doesn't seem to readily lend itself to gaming. You'd be able to get an intense game out of the initial invasion months, although it would probably offend American sensibilities, as we made a lot of mistakes. Thank you, MacArthur.
I'd be interested in seeing a different sort of war shooter - picture this if you will: Co-op, with the players alternating between front-line soldiers and high level brass, making attack decisions and then carrying them out - but not slaving the story to actual historical events except at the beginning. Give us a chance to do better (or worse). |
