This is still going? Uh why?

Same reason we play any old game, nostalgia.

Or maybe because new games simply don't compare.

Well, the whole concept is very complicated.

So say I am sitting at home unemployed trying to figure out how to make money. Oh, look a game called "=%iu" is coming out next month, I will design and run a =%iu fan website, and make a living off it.

There is a fine line between a fansite and an income generating commercial enterprise. Is this not profiteering off someone elses property?

Ultima Online is my drug. I've quit that game at least 30 times *for good* in the last 13 years...and I'm still playing it.

23. First Mafia Demo... Mar 10, 2010, 22:41 JohnBirshire
I downloaded the demo for the first Mafia, and was blown away by it. It was a simple concept, a firefight in a parking garage, but it was probably one of the most immersive gaming experiences I had had that year.

So I promptly went out and bought the full version...just to find none of it compared to the demo mission. It was kind of like watching a movie trailer and seeing every good part in the entire movie.

Kind of off topic. But in reference to it being only 15 hours long, I'm okay with that...almost welcome it, as long as it is 15 hours well spent. My pile of games is already growing so fast I can't keep up with it, already 100s of hours behind.

News Comments > Pirates of the Burning Sea Server Merges
3. Re: Pirates of the Burning Sea Server Merges Feb 5, 2010, 00:20 JohnBirshire
I bought the game and played it the first month.

What is remarkable about this game is that it is one of the only games I've played where I could literally read books while playing it without distracting from my success whatsoever. Sail perpendicular to my target, match speed, set guns on autofire, read book until I heard victory music, rinse, repeat. 50 hours later I was max level, and then I went on to do some hardcore PvP. So realistically hardcore that I spent a week before finding a single player merchant ship to attack before they dumped their cargo straight to the ocean floor. Awesome game, Pirates of the Burning Sea. Wish I had stuck around longer, I could have read about 200 more books by now.

That game subsequently went out and sold one copy, literally. pretty much sold as many copies as most games Mr. McGee has been involved with.

Oooh, Paul Kemp, his Forgotten Realms books are amazing. R.A. Salvatore and himself are the most proficient authors it has.

When you create a Jedi, are you randomly assigned a midi-chlorian count that determines how high your level can be? And you don't know what it is until you can't seem to gain experience any longer? If so, at least it is canon.

I remember playing this at release for a couple weeks. Ultimately stale, but I suppose you could kill a few weeks in it.

Champions is worth playing once just to design a few characters. I spent longer designing the characters than I did playing.

News Comments > UO Return to Britannia Campaign
27. UOGamers... Sep 29, 2009, 03:02 JohnBirshire

I "came back" to UO a few years ago, and did so by playing on the UOGamer's Hybrid server. It is the closest thing to the original feel of UO you can get, with no expansions past T2A. It is also open PvP, with reds allowed anywhere. Online population is always 1,000+, sometimes upwards of 2,500, and with the smaller original landmass you see people everywhere. *unlike the ever shrinking population combined with an ever growing landmass of the official servers that make them feel like ghostlands* PvP is also fun and balanced, with many possible PvP templates, and no "items to win" so skill actually matters. I can't recommend it enough for someone looking for a little trip down nostalgia lane.

9. Bethesda bashing... Sep 12, 2009, 15:26 JohnBirshire
I think it's a legit complaint. If I saw a package labeled "Fallout trilogy" on the shelf, my first assumption would be that it includes Fallouts 1, 2 and 3.

Amen. People are jumping on Bethesda's case, without looking at all the facts. I recently saw "Fallout Trilogy" on store shelves as well, and immediately thought "Wow, that was quick", of course thinking it was 1, 2, and 3 bundled. After closer inspection I realized it was 1 and 2 bundled with Fallout Tactics. Please tell me that was NOT a marketing scheme trying to capitalize on the confusion and/or success of Fallout 3, please do.

As for people who say Fallout 3 was a disappointment, sucked in comparison, or as the earlier poster in this thread stated "If people play the first two Fallouts, they'll realize how disappointing FO3 was.", I call bullcrap. Don't get me wrong, I played Fallout before it was even released and was blown away. I literally played the little demo that came with a PC Gamer magazine for about 20 hours, and it didn't even have that much content, that is how mesmerized I was with it. I then proceeded to play Fallout 1 and 2 religiously. But to come out and flame Fallout 3 is asinine. It sold millions of more copies, made tens of millions of more dollars, was even REVIEWED HIGHER than Fallout 1 and 2, and brought much more fame and recognition to the Fallout series than it previously had. If you call that a failure, you are a moron. People who never even heard of Fallout 1 or 2 are going back and playing them because Fallout 3 caught their interest, so "hardcore elite fanbois" should be kissing Bethesda's ass, not flaming them.

The only thing I am worried about now is that this Interplay/Bethesda lawsuit, counter-suit, etc battle doesn't put a Fallout MMO in jeopardy, because such an MMO would awesome.

2. I miss UO so much... Sep 8, 2009, 18:09 JohnBirshire
UO from 97 through 99 were probably the most memorable years in my lifelong gaming career. If I even began to explain why it would turn into a 100 page thesis.

New MMOs are somewhat entertaining, but ultimately sub-par to the feelings I had when playing UO back in the day. It is hard to explain, but when I was playing UO I literally felt like I was "living" in it.

Glad to see there is still a market for it however, it truly is a one of a kind game.
