I made $40,000 between 97-01 buying/selling Ultima Online and Asheron's Call accounts. When I occassionally tell people this, they are always like "OMG THAT IS AMAZING!!!", but when I explain it is only $10,000 a year and you could make twice that on minimum wage in some states, it kind of loses it's significance.

Nowadays people make a huge deal about "pro gamers" making a lot of money...they don't. A very small percentage each year make more than you could make flipping burgers while the overwhelming majority make even less. Still have a loooong way to go folks.

Blizzard opened an auction house, made items hardly ever drop in game so that people had no choice but to buy them on the auction house...then blamed the auction house for ruining the game.

This whole project is a waste of time, effort, and money. Give it up already and spend the resources elsewhere.

Will this have official servers? Or is it all peer hosted?

Half assed port, or developed with PC in mind?

it is basically untraceable.

What?!?! The entire ledger is public information. It's far more traceable than US dollars! We could be so lucky if our major institutions used Bitcoins, we would see and be able to scrutinize all the corruption and waste imposed on us.

Sure, but I have never had money stolen from my account.....

I worked five years as a personal banker for Citigroup, I spent a sizeable amount of hours every week assisting clients who had funds stolen from their accounts. And the US dollar is the primary source of money laundering in the world. As for people who lost their funds with Mt. Gox, investors in literally anything lose their investments sometimes due to unscrupulous activity. I find it ironic that every argument I have seen against bitcoin can be used against any other currency in the world, oftentimes to much greater extent.

Warren Buffett, although an incredibly successful investor, knows absolutely nothing about tech and has never really even invested in a start-up company of any sort. He is also notoriously late on investing in technology at all. And the fact that he said Bitcoin will be gone in "10 years" instead of 1, 2, or less, shows that he doesn't really know. A lot of old timers thought the internet was a fad when it was new, so you have to take anything they say with a grain of salt.

*edit* P.S. He also said gold and silver was a bad investment immediately prior to it's value skyrocketing.

I think people missed the HUGE news. Personal Servers of the Game!!!

Yep that is what I read to. That is something that needs to become a trend.

There already are, and have always been, player run servers for almost every MMO in existence. I have been playing on Ultima Online and WoW player run servers off and on since the games were released. Many of them are even better than the official servers. This is why there wasn't much reaction to this "news"....because it isn't news.

8. Re: Asheron's Call Future Updates Mar 4, 2014, 17:14 JohnBirshire

I bought this the day it came out, and played 16 hours a day on the Darktide PvP server. This game was the only MMO ever where you actually felt like a god. I would run into a town and slaughter everyone in it, loot their most valuable stuff, run to a dungeon and do the same thing, run into the next town, etc. People would see me coming and literally bow down and swear their fealty to me so I wouldn't kill them, and then I would get a percentage of any experience they earned, making me even more powerful. Then if someone bothered them they would message me, and I would come running in and lifestone spawnkill camp their harasser into oblivion. The only person on the server a higher level than me was my best friend, so there was absolutely nothing to be afraid of, it was the ultimate power trip. Unfortunately I was obsessed with the game and had to sell my account *for a nice figure* before my life fell apart outside of the game, but I still remember the days fondly.

Other than Ultima Online, there has been no greater MMO. MMO's today are nothing compared to what they used to be.

Did they ever add the option to move the chat/dialogue window? For a text heavy game, it drove me insane to have to stare into the top right corner of my huge monitor while I read everything, made my neck and eyes ache. Huge design oversight *among many* by the developers.

Wow! Apparently lots of people want to be dicks to their fellow man, kill them, and steal their stuff.
I unfortunately know enough people in the realz that if there was hunting license for people they'd be on it. And not for revenge on someone you don't like, nope just the sport of it. It's amazing anything works.

Exactly. It has been said that DayZ is a realistic simulation of what will happen if/when society breaks down (probably without the zombies though). I for one would rather not be reminded of it.

I completely disagree. Some of the nicest people I know in real life are hardcore griefers in online games.

If you think video games are an accurate portrayal of how people would behave in real life, you are advocating the same argument as people such as Jack Thompson, and others like him who want to ban video games for ridiculous reasons. Can you not see the double standard?

These VR headsets were a "craze" 15 years ago, then they disappeared. Suddenly they are reappearing a few years ago, and still only a handful of people seem to care.

1. Re: DayZ Week One Recap Dec 24, 2013, 12:12 JohnBirshire

So what is the point of DayZ? You just slowly sneak around picking up food and pop cans until you inevitably run into a large group of players that you have no chance against, get ganked, then rinse and repeat? I just dont understand the hype from the gameplay videos I have watched. And what is with all the rampart cheating I have heard constantly about, are the developers incompetant, because I rarely run into cheaters in any of the other dozens of online games I have played. Can someone enlighten me as to why I should want to play this game?

I am really looking forward to DayZ, but I am going to wait until the official release. I don't even like beta testing games, bugs/glitches/exploits galore doesn't appeal to me whatsoever, couldn't imagine alpha testing it.

1. Names... Dec 18, 2013, 19:10 JohnBirshire

The biggest mistake they made is unique names. Your super hero's name is extremely important, look at any iconic superhero, and their name fits their persona and abilities. I wanted to make a fire/martial arts character named Third Degree. It was the perfect name...third degree burns, third degree black belt. Taken. On the first day. On every single server. Even Cryptic found an easy way around character names with Champion Online with everyone getting any name they chose, if Cryptic can manage it, anybody else should. Epic fail.

The way bitcoin works is actually quite revolutionary, if you look at it with an open mind you will be quite amazed. *I made the mistake of blowing it off as a completely joke when it was new* Digital/virtual currencies are going to change the way money is transferred around the world dramatically in the next decade. As to whether Bitcoin sticks around is another story, being first to market is advantageous, however betting on "round one" of something new is always a gamble.

Virtual currency, here to stay. Bitcoin, may or may not be, if you buy it now and it does, you will make a lot of money, if you do and it doesn't, there it goes.

5. Re: Black Friday Metaverse Nov 29, 2013, 13:44 JohnBirshire

I have been really depressed the last couple days, to the extent that I haven't been able to sleep. I looked at bitcoins a year and a half ago, and saw that they were "mined" using processing power. I then Iooked online and saw 100's of people buying mining equipment and figured with more people mining, and more processor power being used, people would just keep making more and more of them, and they would be worthless. So I thought better of it, and moved on. If I had JUST seen that there were only a FIXED amount that COULD be mined, if I had just read that one sentence, I would have gambled $10,000 on them in a heartbeat, and been a millionaire today. If I had spent 15 minutes researching bitcoin instead of 10, I could have retired. So dissapointed in myself right now, and I also found a forum post with 100's of people with similar stories.

Are they a bubble? Of course. But bubbles are fine if you make money before they pop, but I think we missed our chance.

People who thinks PC games are "Free to Play" are casuals at best. You might be able to demo or sample a lot of the game, but if you want to do anything endgame related, you better start paying up.
