14. Re: No subject Jun 16, 2003, 14:20 Schnapple

I always just used Winamp 2 for MP3's and nothing else. Winamp 3 aims to be a do-all, be-all, end-all media player, which would be fine if it did it well. I've tried it a few times and always go back to Winamp 2. Some of the "media library" features really only work if you keep everything on your hard drive and have really really good ID3 habits, neither of which apply to me. Plus, it tried to put everything into a playlist, instead of just files from a directory that it can play. In particular, at my last job the CD-ROM drive sucked so I used Winamp 2's ability to cache files to the hard drive before it played them. Winamp 3, as far as I can gather, lacks this ability.

And it seems like Winamp's development went the way of the (also AOL-owned) Netscape. Develop the new one and keep plugging at the old one until people migrate. Of course the new one is big, bloated, buggy, and all for features you could care less about, so you stick with the old one. I wonder how many people still use Netscape 4.7x?

5. Ultima 9? Jun 16, 2003, 12:21 Schnapple

Is this the patch that makes the game work?

*ducks*

Actually that whole thing was sad - many many years in the making, then bonered at launch. It might be interesting to see how it would fare on something better than a Voodoo3 nowadays, but did they ever even finish patching that one?

It's probably a Bink video - when encoded wrong those things suck framerate wise. You can have a top of the line system and it'll chug like a little bitch on a 640x480 movie.

2. Re: How about Serious Sam 3? Jun 10, 2003, 09:56 Schnapple

Well given that Serious Sam 2 was pretty much Serious Sam 1 + 10% (not that that's a bad thing per se), they're probably working on having just a wee bit more of a game. I'm pretty sure it's the publishers, not the developers, who come up with these "gold editions" - be glad there's not some weird exclusive content not available in a patch or something.

News Comments > Metallica Game Announced
99. Re: album review... Jun 9, 2003, 10:33 Schnapple

On the one hand, "exploring" wouldn't be such a bad thing if the original studio releases were more frequent. Load came out seven years ago (let's be honest, Reload was just Load's table scraps) and that was five years after the Black Album. We all know that it'll be like five more years until the next Metallica release, so the ones who don't like St. Anger should go ahead and leave now.

On the other hand, more frequent releases is sometimes seen as "hosing" the fans, something Metallica is guilty of with their "just before Christmas" releases (Reload, Garage, Inc., S&M).

Bottom line - St. Anger is a solid album for what it is and what it aims to be. It's not for everyone, that's for sure. Maybe it's best if lots of hangers on leave the fanbase of the group. The ones left are the ones they want anyway.

78. St. Anger Jun 6, 2003, 08:06 Schnapple

Well I for one have not only listened to the album, but bought it as well (it's $9.99 at Best Buy for chrissakes). I like it. No, it's not Metallica pre-1992. No, it's not Metallica 1992-2002. It's like Metallica Phase III. Have a listen to it and for just an hour or so, pretend like you're not trying to compare it to previous Metallica.

Plus a lot of people on here seem to want Metallica to go away or die or lose or something. OK, but why? Do you realize what the alternatives are? Boy bands, Britney Spears, J-Lo and that Nu Metal shit. This new Metallica record is trying to revive hard edged heavy metal and I for one am all for it. I don't have a problem with those other forms of music I mentioned existing, but I don't want that to be all there is.

Of course it occurs to me that a lot of people on this thread (with the exception of those guys who said they were thirty) aren't very old - so they like that Nu Metal stuff that's going around. Same reason I love The Black Album - it was out when I was in High School. So no, these guys aren't probably going to like St. Anger. Oh well.

As for the old timers - Cliff's dead, Newsted's gone, this is Metallica III. No, it's not the Second Coming but it's a nice hard album to listen to. I'll take that over Staind/Trapt/Linkin/Bizkit any day.

Well before you go and not buy their album, listen to it. Go to www.easports.com (amongst others) and you can stream the CD. Personally I like it. It's not the second coming of ...And Justice but it's not bad.

can they not change to something better?!?

Maybe Valve has been secretly writing a better forum system for about five years now...

(Yeah I know it's a Sierra forum. Laugh. This is the same forum-type system they tell people games are cancelled with.)

2. Re: No subject May 25, 2003, 13:23 Schnapple

I dunno when they're gonna get in the Server Browsing and Chat features (sounds like a GameSpy issue) but according to their forum posts, they're never going to have the game movies in Linux. Apparently despite the fact that the Bink tools have been ported to Linix, the contract they signed with Bioware forbids using them. If they wanted Bink movies in NWN Linux they'd have to pay more, and that's obviously not worth it.

9. Re: Oh Goody! May 15, 2003, 12:36 Schnapple

Well let's see, Atari (formerly Infogrames) is the publisher. So they don't develop the game, they just put it in boxes and send it to stores and such. The developer is Firaxis, which is the home of Sid Meier, who is the developer of the original game.

So it will be Sid Meier who butchers it, if there's butchering to be done. Plus its his child to butcher in the first place. Be sure to be cynical towards the right person.

Actually 2.3 cents

And thank goodness they seem to have cancelled that other game. It was my information that it wasn't really role playing, it was more like a point-and-click FMV game. We don't need any more of those.

Given that the real game fills a CD, isn't it possible that some of the upper level stuff that you'd never get to in 60 minutes are missing from the game?
