News Comments > Half-Life 2: Episode Three Hints?
6. Re: Half-Life 2: Episode Three Hints? Jul 22, 2010, 12:33 Drayth

Huh??

They've made more games over the past few years then they've ever made at one time. Portal 2 is a full fledged game, I'm guessing as large in content as something between Half Life 2 and one of it's episodes.

Before that we had Left 4 Dead 2.. Steam may have gotten more streamlined over the years but I don't see that as some complete shift in focus.

I think what they did is took a break from Half-Life as they had been creating Half-Life sequels and episodes straight on from the release of the original. They're avoiding burning themselves out on Half-Life. If that results in a better game in the long run it'll have been worth the wait (if not incredibly painful for us none the less, I'm with the Atari 2600 guy).

News Comments > Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead Demo
16. Re: Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead Demo Jul 21, 2010, 13:00 Drayth

I think these are two different issues - in my case the unit literally becomes invincible and you can fire at it dead on and not kill it (I had this happen once). Your case sounds like the bullet is hitting an obstacle it shouldn't before it hits the target.

Your problem might be due to the fact that the bullet literally fires from under your sights so the bullet's trajectory is lower then your where you have the target centered on your screen. A lot of times (dating back to OpFlash) I've squeezed the trigger while prone and had the bullet fire into the ground because I didn't raise the scope up enough to get the rifle's muzzle high enough for the bullet to clear the ground in front of me.

If that's what's effecting you it isn't really a bug, just something we're not used to as gamers. Pretty much all other games don't tie the bullet's exit directly to the muzzle on the in game gun model, OpFlash / ArmA does.

I remember in ArmA 1 though, I would lean around a corner of a building and fire into an invisible section of the building's corner that leans out further then what is visible in game. If it's that, it's just annoying (never noticed that problem on terrain though).

--Edit: Here you go, Ant.

Although 2009's Arma II set a high standard for the all-purpose military simulator, its buggy single-player campaign held it back from achieving its full potential. In contrast, Arma II: Operation Arrowhead, its stand-alone expansion, boasts all the beauty, realism, and action of the original and none of the game-breaking bugs. Improving upon its predecessor in almost every way, Arrowhead introduces a new setting, new weapons, and new adventures to a great military sandbox

News Comments > Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead Demo
13. Re: Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead Demo Jul 21, 2010, 11:55 Drayth

ArmA II engine is very stable as far as I can tell, Ant. I don't see any bug complaints other then one rare one involving MG nests on the forums. That one's just a nuisance, sometimes you can't kill a guy who is mounted to a machine gun.

Other then that the game runs great on my system. Course I've never had problems with crashes even in ArmA 1, but like I said, the forums seem happy enough.

I know usually ArmA demos suck, it's usually an early version of the code, but this is well into the ArmA II engine's life.

The AI is much improved over OpFlash. There's also the Zeus AI mod which makes the AI scary good (dunno if it's been updated to work with Arrowhead though, or if it needs to be). The AI will use cover incredibly effectively with that mod, as well as hunt you down in packs (that flank).

There's a free demo staring you in the face though.. if you're at all interested, why don't you give it a shot?

I do think that was the easiest ArmA / OpFlash mission (involving combat) I've ever played though. Have yet to pick up the full expansion, waiting till my new PC's ready.

Was a nice surprise to see the mission editor included in the demo.

I guess I'm just not that into Starcraft, it's got better graphics and all but as far as RTS games go I enjoy the likes of Total Annihilation and Command and Conquer (original) a little more.

T.A. was the bomb. Especially for LAN games.

Yeah, they should have let this one cook a little more in the oven before doing more then announce it.

Those shots look like it's being made exclusively for the Nintendo DS.

What I meant is by narrowing down the choice you can make in creating your character, there's less variables to deal with in terms of the character's place within the plot.

By saying he/she's of X race and comes from Y town, they can have more frequent and complex moments that are directly tied to your character's background in the rest of the game.

Again, kinda how Torment was a more personal story about the main character then Baldur's Gate was (not that BG completely lacked that element).

I see what you're saying too though, and you're right in that the character wont be as personal to -you- as much of the character is pre-written. I mean it in terms of the story's narration.

Well limited character creation didn't hurt Planescape: Torment.

...we'll see.

Edit: BTW...
loosing the ability to control the entire party...

It's verified on the forums that console's are seeing that change to the combat system.. the PC combat system will be similar to DA:O

And, Dragon Age's sales may surprise you...

You still customize your character's looks.

You still pick your character's class.

You still pick your character's gender.

What they have locked is what race you can pick, and I believe the character's name. All this for the need for voice acting, and what I hope will be made up for in the form of a much more personal story to the main character.

IMO this could still easily be a worthy successor to DA:O...

I hope I get in to sample this game as if it was a demo since most games don't even have demos, especially with MMOGs.

Nearly every MMO has a trial. I guess most come out after the game's release, but still...

Awesome news.

And yes if they do one thing right, please keep the sequel at least somewhat difficult. It was nice being challenged by a PC Game again for once.

I think it's mostly because the shadows for large objects like trees and building are static (well, applies more to their original shadow tech), so they had to pick a direction all the shadows should sprawl out towards.

News Comments > StarCraft II to Go 3D Via a Patch
41. Re: StarCraft II to Go 3D Via a Patch Jul 5, 2010, 17:24 Drayth

3D increases immersion greatly, so long as it's not bothering you in some other way. As I've said, it works 100% fine with me, I've gamed in stereo over weekends up to 4 to 6 hours with no issues.

Having said that, one of the best stereo moments was in Half-Life.. I was in a pitched battle involving an Osprey over head. When I finally managed to RPG it it was directly over my head and I was staring straight up at it... so the debri came raining down "onto" my head..

I seriously just sat there slack-jawed for a moment. You're adding an element that is -missing- from your normal view. If anything it makes the game seem more real.

But like I've said, if you're one of the people that's getting headaches or eyestrain from the current method, then yeah that's totally distracting from the game.

Well it kinda has to be something you can do over and over and over.. until someone creates a dynamic procedurally generated content from scratch creator, I don't think the peeps at Bioware are quite that talented.

At the least I'm expecting WoW with Jedis, at the most.. dunno, but Bioware's pretty good at making fun stuff. Maybe the universe opens up into a full on PvP battle torn playground or something.
