I enjoyed the demo. Took me 8 tries to get past the first turn but after that I got the hang of it. The third level with all the cars racing through the city is pretty fun.

That is NOT the full extent of the checks. Everytime the game is run it checks your PC's hardware signature to see if it matches the stored activation hash. If it doesn't, the game won't run until it is reactivated. Things that can change your PC's hardware signature are BIOS updates and hardware replacements like CPU's, hard drives, video cards, and NIC's. If you change those things you have to reactivate, and you only get three such activations until you have to call EA up and beg for more.
Then I guess I'm the only person on earth who doesn't have a problem with that. I mean, Windows does that too, and I've never had to call Microsoft to reactive Windows. Heck, if Mass Effect ever tries to pull something funny I can always crack it. It seems like such a silly thing to avoid an entire game because of.

I guess I still don't understand what the problem is with the DRM. It checks in once when you install, and you don't need the disk in your drive to play. That sounds pretty good to me. I don't see how it's restrictive at all or any sort of punishment for legitimate customers.

The graphics are really turning me off but I might give it a try. Turn based tactical combad games aren't exactly a dime a dozen.

This is the spiritual successor to the Close Combat games, I believe. Definitely tempting. Apparently they've fixed a ton of the bugs that were present in the earlier international release or something. I've actually got a demo of it right here from a while back. I guess I should try that out

Every time more people pirate games, companies use more draconian copy protection, leading more people to pirate games to protest the protection, leading to more draconian protection...
