They could combine two franchises: Duke teams up with BJ Blazkowicz (also played by John Cena) for a dual gun blazing blast against Nazi aliens.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. That's not monetizing things properly. First you do Duke and BJ standalone films, as well as the Doom Marine. Then they all team up, to create the VGCU (Video Game Cinematic Universe).

Don't give them ideas.

Oh, that's easy: if you use your computer for more than gaming don't EVER install the latest Windows version before the first service pack coming out. At least.

Not to mention if you have a problem an actual person will call or e-mail you before hell freezes over. One of the crap things about the whole Valve/Steam "flat management" bullshit.

Huh, you know, I must be blessed or something, because the only time I had problems with Steam I got help by e-mail from Steam support.

How many truly fantastic games are forever gone because they required an online infrastructure which was shut down? I can't think of even one off the top of my head. Maybe with more thought...

City of Heroes.

I'm having trouble thinking of another one, though I expect Warhammer Online is on the chopping block before too long here (and I don't know how many people would agree with me that it was great).

Yeah but that was an MMO. There is no way that an MMO will go on forever. Although in the case of City of Heroes, that shutdown was just plain old stupidity and greed at work.

Still, it was a great game, and it's gone for good. That's the main "feature" the current online games generation has to offer: play as long we think is worth you can play.

It would be nice if EA (and other companies) released some sort of server executables of these decomissioned games so people willing to host it for free could keep the ball rolling. But I reckon I'm expecting too much from the suits...

While that portal movie that Danny Trachtenberg made was totally awesome, I don't know that there's enough in Portal to make a movie.

Half Life (1 or 2), on the other hand are basically already storyboarded and would make great movies once adapted into a script. While I think JJ is a great fit (he's a geek of the first order) for something like that, his plate is pretty full for the next decade. Let's run through the list:

Joss: his talent is really with large casts, and HL is a lone wolf story. Still, a top director for this material.

Zack Snyder: excels at action, but I'd want him to cut back on the slo mo.

Michael Bay: As long as he got a good script, an over the top actiony HL could be fun. Thinking more The Rock and The Island, not Transformers.

Neil Marshall: Directed The Descent, would definitely make a tension filled HL movie.

Sam Raimi: A solid choice. Good for this material having done both action and horror.

My number one though?
Chris Nolan: This would be an amazing Half Life movie. Gritty, with the right balance between action and realism.

I'd vote for Neill Blomkamp.

Hurricane sweeping US east coast... Disney buys Lucasfilm...

Suddenly all that 2012 previsions don't look so absurd.

As someone who works in the gaming industry I have to say his numbers look about right. Once you start considering countries like China and Brazil the piracy rates shoot through the roof. The entire comment is about those countries, but everyone here takes it as an attack on western gamers, that is funny in so many ways.

Yeah, someone else mentioned that earlier, and you're right - as soon as you think China, Brazil and Russia it makes sense.

Can't say anything about China or Russia (except that in Soviet Russia games pirates you!), but here in Brazil Steam is quite popular (thanks F2P TF2). I'd say that about 55%-60% PC gamer here has Steam installed and from these at least 50% usually buys games (mostly during Steam promotions). So this gives us a number of *at least* 25% of the PC gamers as legitimate customers. I know I am not a typical example, but I paid for all my games - most of then I bought thru Steam during several promotions, usually paying $10-$20 each.

This is a direct rip off of Kickstarter's success with Steam taking a cut of the profits.

Shame on Newell.

Pretty sure this has zero to do with funding a game and all to do with deciding if it gets listed on steam for digital distribution.

So I am not the the only one thinking this way. I failed to see any mention to funding, too.

GFWL has left a lot to be desired since its birth without many improvements along the way. You would think the largest OS developer on the planet would get it right and get a clue from all the negativity from gamers (i.e. Dark Souls petition), but NO, they just keep throwing enough money and attention at it just to keep it afloat without any modifications, changes, or improvements.

Because improving PC gamimg isn't Microsoft goal. Their goal is sell more Xboxes, and every game sold as PC and not Xbox is loss for them. They have to make our experience as miserable as possible, so we would go to promised land and paise them how Xbox Live is so much better than GFWL.

^^^ This. A thousand times. Microsoft is maybe one of the main culprits for the currently sorry state of PC gaming. DIAF, GFWL. You won't be missed.
