News Comments > Duke 3D Mod

Ray Marden wrote on Sep 27, 2010, 10:59:
This will absolutely get shut down, but let me reiterate how much I love that game. DNF has gone down a drama-filled rabbit hole, but I would gladly - gladly - pay for a D3D remake done with a current day engine.
We need more games that have fun while kicking ass.
Stuck in a naive dream,
Ray

According to the author, he asked Gearbox and they stated having nothing to do with previous Duke games, and now he's in conversations with Scott Miller. As long he doesn't release anything besides screenshots until having a go from the IP owners, I think he's fine.

During 12 years I had more fun reading about DNF than I could imagine have by playing it. Hope this is just another hoax.

News Comments > AMD Dropping the ATI Brand Name
27. Re: AMD Dropping the ATI Brand Name Aug 30, 2010, 14:36 frag.machine

Historically ATI drivers used to have poor OpenGL implementations (there were cases of drivers reporting complete support for OpenGL 2.0 without supporting the complete API) but good DirectX support. Nvidia on the other hand supported both API's with decent quality and performance. Maybe that's why some people sees ATI driver quality not as good as Nvidia.

You know, a couple CGI episodes with 10 or 15 minutes each set in the Half Life universe and published at YouTube would be feasible and way cool - as long they FIRST release HL3/HL2 Ep3/whatever it's called now. So please Valve, finish the game before going this way!

Size doesn't matter as much as replayability, but it does matter. War and Peace is long because it needed to be to tell its story, and a good video game follows the same formula. The best games are as long as they need to be to accomplish what they set out to do.

I second that. Problem is many modern games have shallow/mediocre gameplay AND are short in hours.

Honestly, how often did id give us free shit? Not very. Instead there were $30 expansion packs. Any 3 Fallout 3 DLC sets have about the same amount of content.

you gotta give id software credit for releasing the source code for their game engine in the past. it made the mod community popular back in the day.

And let's not forget RTCW:ET. How many companies do you see giving to the community a complete, polished game where they spent a good ammount of money, for free ?

That said, I think we won't see that happening anymore. And I'm afraid it's the end of engines source code releases, too.

I would love to see a current generation game revisit the original world of Quake 1.

Me too. There's a F.E.A.R. mod doing that. Looks awesome. Check out moddb.com.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD AND ALL THAT IS HOLY PLEASE STOP REPORTING DUKE NUKEM FOREVER NEWS UNTIL IT IS ACTUALLY RELEASED. It's like a freaking zombie. It just won't die!

I have to wonder how much credit George will try to take, if it ever is...

The irony here is that after 14+ years this game will be rushed out of door, probably in a very unpolished form, just to get the end of year sales.

VALVE did not make Portal or Left for Dead, they had other teams that made them that had been independent prior to Valve acquiring them.

Which is why I specifically mentioned Left 4 Dead *2* and Portal *2* which valve developed *themselves*.
"themselves" == "the original teams, now hired by Valve" you mean ?

Tried to place this last night it said "steam servers currently too busy try again later" excuse me? I wanna play my fucking game I paid for. Tried like 8 more times and gave up. Fuck you.

I'm fine with servers busy just after a patch release. I can wait to download the patch in the next day if it's the case. What really pisses me off is being kicked from a perfectly normal game because "VAC servers went down", or suddenly realize all my loadout is temporarily unavailable in the middle of the battle because "this server lost connection with VAC servers". Looks like TF2 grew beyond Valve expectations (and infrastructure).

And the winners will be able to see the Woompa Loompas working on Half Life 2 ?

I just realized that in the second announce, at the first time I haven't checked the scores. I dont know, I think it's a bit frustrating and weird, it's like we are all looking for a Willy Wonka golden pass.
