News Comments > Video Games = "Play-Like Activities"
1. Re: Video Games = Aug 17, 2009, 10:20 Atomic

"How do we simultaneously help the public steer away from imitation play-like activities, harness the potentially positive aspects of video games, and keep in perspective the overall place of video games in our society?"

This one is easy; get rid of hamster wheel styles of play.

Prez, now that we have the "censored" name calling out of the way, I am trying to have a reasonable dialog with you. What I am saying is that the gamers are paying the bills and haven't let up, despite how poorly they are treated. What is the motivation for a developer to change their behavior? The only way it will change is if we stop chomping at the bit for the latest/greatest/next best thing and then pay full retail price for it when it is released. Show some patience and let it hit the bargain bin. That will send a message; like leaving a quarter tip for a waitress that gave you poor service.

Whine if you want to whine... I don't like it, but I can take it. But all that does is perpetuate the situation. They don't care about anything but your money because that is all you give them.

Pretty surprised at the censorship actually, because I've seen much worse, but I'm sure you have your reasons. Keep up the great work, Blue!

I don't disagree with you, but don't you see the cause and effect? Why should PC developers give a crap about what gamers think? The most vocal of the lot are whiners through and through, yet they buy the games anyway. Grow up, act maturely, offer constructive criticism, vote with your dollars, and the developers will start to listen. Heck, they may even start to act like they give a crap about you. Whining is not taking something seriously. Action is taking something seriously.

What a stupid statement. It goes without saying that gaming takes low precedence on the heirarchy of life's crises, but this is a games forum. One built by, run by, and frequented by people who take gaming as a serious hobby. Deal with it or get lost.

Ouch, what's the matter, hit you where it hurts?

So what you are saying is, because you are a serious gamer you can't rise above whining? I didn't realize those things were mutually inclusive, but thanks for clearing that up!

Like the movie industry, it shows a distinct elimination of anything creative.
They are not fools. They only give the people what they want. Read through these boards. You'll see more requests for sequels or nostalgia than for anything new.

If you hurry, Steam still has the pre-purchase link up, which gets you a copy of the original for free as well.

Too bad you can't. Spelling. Capitalization. Punctuation. Paraghraphs. Grammar exists for a reason. Know them. Use them. Love them. You're not even half as clever as you believe yourself to be. Which is to say, not really clever at all. I'm all but entirely certain that slug would be more than an intellectual equal to you.

Self-righteous comment void due to misspelling.

Getting rid of handles and making people use their real (verified) names might go a long way to "mature" message boards. Then again, it might not.

Someone that was interviewed yesterday (sorry, forget his name, but he was a partner with Michael @ MMJ) said that a lot of Michael's handlers told him it was a bad idea to hang out with children, and why did he persist? His answer "Because children are the only ones that tell me the truth." I suspect he was weary of all the leeches in his life, lying to him, telling him what he wanted to hear, just so they could keep their hands in Michael's wallet. He probably became a recluse to get away from a society that just wanted to take. He longed for his innocence lost and tried to relive it through his relationships with children. The very thing he thought was his sanctuary ended up just being more of the same, when conniving parents decided to take from him once again. At that point, he had no place to turn for peace. I imagine his spent his final years as a pretty tortured soul. I hope he has finally found peace.

If they weren't terrorists going in, they dang sure will be coming out.

The first part is debatable, but the second is most likely true. Whether they started as a terrorist or become one, it is doubtful they can be assimilated back into society. Therefore, what to do with them? I'm seriously curious what you think the answer is.

If the argument is that the older players of the 60's and 70's were not making the kind of money the players are making today, why can't current players take care of the older players? Is socialism not good enough within their own ranks? What is the point of the union again?

This is evidence of abject failure with the union that was/is supposed to represent them.

8. Re: Game Addiction Study Apr 20, 2009, 16:16 Atomic

Is being addicted to videogames worse than being addicted to coffee? Or to porn? Or to TV? I would say that it's not.

No, but is it any better? It depends to what degree. If taken to the pathological level, all are bad.

Unlike cocaine or cold medicine, a videogame addiction isn't going to cause harm to your body.

It may not cause physical harm Creston, but it can certainly cause psychological harm, and even domestic and sociological harm. Think about what the study found... irritability, skipping chores or homework, lying, stealing. If something has your kid that out of whack there is a problem; I don't care what it is.

However, the games are not the problem. I lay this squarely at the feet of the parents that enable, passively or actively, the addiction to form and foster.
