News Comments > Wangtastic Shadow Warrior Trailer
17. Re: Wangtastic Shadow Warrior Trailer Sep 8, 2013, 07:09 Ray Marden

SiN Episodes: Emergence killed the franchise and killed episodic gaming. Just saying...
Too little...too rough...too late.
I am actually interested in Shadow Warrior, but not until it hits $20 or so. I'm still picking off charred flesh from buying Rise of the Triad and I never finished Hard Reset, finding it too repetitive and uninspiring.

Waiting for Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs to unlock,

Launches = Underwhelming if you have any type of decent PC.

Xbox 180 = A new line every day, costs $100.00 more, and comes with a NSA spy camera with no gaming relevance.

Wii U = Even at $300.00 and packing in Wind Waker HD, it still doesn't do enough for me.
$250.00 with the pack in...maybe...
Thinking I may get just the PS4 for Netflix streaming ,

If the developers cannot even express why the game is special, why would anybody else see it? I just looked at the game's Steam page and it just looks like you spend all day finding reasons to reject 16-bit characters

I am presuming (hoping) that there is more to the game, but it doesn't seem appealing. I'm guessing they want to play up some moral choice of you selecting who does or doesn't enter the country? Plus, for $10, it seems really expensive. Somebody could take $8.00 and get both of the current Humble Bundle deals.

In a broad sense, I support more indies breaking out, but I don't see what it special about the game nor did it entice me at all.
If that is all the game offers, they need to win me over in a demo.
Not hating, but finding nothing enticing,
Ray

I'm not sure if they ever made it to a PBS release, but the films have previously, if not currently are, been available on Netflix.
A bit light on budget, but properly quirky all the same.

I do agree with that. He seems to have no real passion for gaming and certainly is not a game designer, but technology has always intrigued him.

Hopefully they finalize his separation from id and he can work on this full time.
I doubt this will take off, but here is to hoping...

D10 is coming, but it will be a bit.

Meanwhile, can I say how surprised I was that Sharlto Copley plays Kruger in Elysium? Maybe it was apparent to everybody else, but I found myself thinking "It's too bad Copley from D9 wasn't given a role in Elysium - instead they went with that crazy looking guy for the enemy"...and then I read a story to the contrary about two weeks back.

Guessing I will rent Oblivion in the meantime,

News Comments > id: RAGE "Not Dead"
33. Re: id: RAGE Aug 4, 2013, 20:44 Ray Marden

Rage was mediocre. It was a letdown on the technology front, gameplay front, art design front, and as id's single-player magnum opus.
It had no cohesive elements and felt severely constrained.
BL2, FO3, FO:NV are all better games in the same broad style and there are many, many other outright better games than Rage.

If you sincerely enjoyed Rage, go play these other games and broaden your horizons.

Can id actually make a good single-player game? Who is leading the company, who is driving its design? Where is its passion? What is it trying to bring to the market?

Wishing somebody would buy the rights to a Quake sequel,
Ray

P.S. Don't forget the fallen.

My 5" Samsung Galaxy S4 has the same resolution as my 27" monitor and my 60" television.
I guess he's fine with 720p console gaming, too???
And Carmack thinks it is "almost ridiculous" that we may finally get high-resolution displays for the mass market in a few years?

Talk about clueless...

3. Re: New Beta AMD Catalyst Drivers Aug 1, 2013, 19:55 Ray Marden

They already pushed out an initial tweak/fix for the micro-stutter in an earlier driver; it removed this issues in nearly all the game I have been playing. Having said that, these are supposed to include the "big" fix for the issue.

I tried the new drivers and they actually made RotT bearable (framerate wise,) but I have not experienced true micro-stutter for the past 2-3 months. If you haven't upgraded drivers for some time, give it a shot.
Yes, I enable CF for games that don't have a CF profile.

29. Re: Ships Ahoy - Rise of the Triad Jul 31, 2013, 18:50 Ray Marden

Eh...only get it if you are a big, big fan of RotT. I always thought of it as the red-headed step-child of the FPS genre and this game is a basic updating of the original game, but the first two levels do not come off as anything special.

A dude? With guns? Three random soldiers to shoot at? Jump discs? Coins and ankhs to collect? Fast movement speed? With secrets to find?

That's what you get - that's exactly what you get, that's all you get. It's like a port of the original to modern day systems without (m)any upgrades. On top of that, it has quite a few rough edges and hasn't pushed any boundaries, but it's also a $15 game.

As others have noted, the performance needs some tweaking. I am running it on "ludicrous" and it looks really basic. The performance feels fast, but really inconsistent, too.
The crude videos are indicative of the final game.
Expecting more, but having received the basics of RotT,
Ray

But the Wii U is neither amazing technology nor is it overfilling with great games. It is not an amazing system, it has no amazing games, continues the issues with adapter/controller overload, requires distinctly unique games to really utilize the tablet, its price is greatly inflated because of the under-utilized tablet, and they did nothing to drastically improve the functionality of the motion control it brought forth with the Wii.

Don't get me started on the non-E3 conference with the poor streaming functionality and promises of games for next year.

I have generally considered myself a Nintendo fan, but I got really tired of the Wii and I have yet to find any plausible reason to purchase the Wii U, especially at its current price. Meanwhile, I will gladly pick up the PS4 and am interested in what the Xbox 180 will do and I have all sorts of good or interesting things to play on the PC.
They need to hand out systems at this point and hope we buy games.
Having loaned out my Wii for the past two years,

Fish was often - or at least had the outburst of a - a caustic jerk

Fez was a good indie game, but I was let down by how quickly it fell back on restrictive gimmicks - the language, the numbering system, the first-person view, etc.

For an indie game, though, it was generally a good product (first day Steam issues and the console savegame issue excluded.)

But none of that validates the nasty, nasty things that have been said on both sides. You can disagree with people or even put their actions or ideas in a bad light without being unabashedly crude or by threatening peoples' lives.

Finding words matter,

I immediately though of Bad Mojo and then I sawn the screenshots. Problem is, after seeing the screenshots, I was still hoping for a Bad Mojo sequel...

I'll look at a review when it comes out, but it just doesn't seem sufficiently appealing - slightly crude visually, childish and/or exaggerated, it looks really confined, the star cockroach looks awfully happy, etc.
Here is to hoping, though.
Needing a great review or amazing Steam sale,

For $5, Fez is certainly worth it. However...the game was less fun or exciting than I expected it to be.

Long story short, I had no ideas about the game other than it played with four perspectives and the developer was a jerk. Coming into the game, I was expecting something amazing - like first playing Portal - or a quirky take on the juxtaposition of 2D and 3D environments - something akin to Paper Mario.

Ultimately, you get the four perspectives, but a lot of the game - at least half of it - is locked off until you learn the Fez numbering system and language, much less a first-person mode that gets unlocked in your second playthrough. Until you do these things, the game is really held back.

I realize many games have pulled the "You beat the game...BUT NOW PLAY ALL THESE NEW LEVELS/COLLECT THIS NEW SPECIAL ITEM!!!!!!!" trick, but there tends to be a much more cohesive flow to the progression. In those games, you are tempted to do and achieve more because it could be really fun and its an interesting challenge that is presented. In this game, perhaps because the levels branch out so much, I hit roadblock after roadblock after roadblock. I hit so many of them that I looked online to see if I had missed something huge in the game (this was exasperated by some technical issues the day one release had...) and I found that many areas were simply not able to be completed because I had to complete another room far, far away or because, through my exploration, I had gone down a completely different route than the developer had intended.

It was worth the $10 I paid at launch and it is definitely worth $5 now, but temper your expectations somewhat. I had only the hype to go on and the final product was much more mundane than I thought it would be.
Quick, somebody call the wwaaaahhhhhhmbulance!
Wishing it was easier to cross between rooms towards the end,

News Comments > Steam Summer Sale Begins
58. Re: Steam Summer Sale Begins Jul 11, 2013, 19:16 Ray Marden

As always, be sure to check your wish list; most items I have on mine are discounted in some fashion and 15% or so of them have discounts of 60% - 75%.

There were some early bandwidth issues, but I've not had any issues since coming home from work. Steam is definitely no longer the de facto place for sales, but my biggest "letdown" of the impending sales is the lack of new, big games that I don't have and actually want to play.
Even more problems of the first world.
I basically have purchased any/every game I would really want to play. What I am left with now are the really flawed games (Remember Me,) buying the Steam version of games I already own/have played (System Shock 2,) or the cheapo indie games or third tier that I am not really sure I would like or play.

Really, I just look for the $5.00 or less items, money I don't mind spending to test something out. We all (or many of us) have a huge backlog of games that we could readily buy rather than buying more entries in our Steam games list.

Having just finished Dust: An Elysian Trail,
Ray

Edit: Derp derp. I post this and then can't access the store...

If the Wii U is the best Nintendo can come up with, it may as well give up and go software only.

I just find the system underwhelming - it is underpowered, has few interesting games, still takes a simple approach to gaming/media consumptions, and is too tablet-focused.

Otherwise, it should drastically cut the price and start pumping out great games - including new IPs - as fast as it can.

Meanwhile, I have both the X180 and PS4 on preorder, but I am thinking that I will only keep the PS4. It's a cheaper, likely more powerful device that focuses on gaming. I was even hoping to flip the X180 to help pay for the PS4, but the market interest is generally lacking at the moment.
Sadly, as a PC gamer, I see nothing interesting to play on either one.
Totally experiencing problems of the first world,
Ray

9. Re: Saturday Consolidation Jun 30, 2013, 07:08 Ray Marden

I am particularly thankful that Sony came to the realization that, since the system is always on, that it could actually recharge controllers and perform downloads while the system is in sleep mode.

Making the camera a separate purchase is the only real "dumb" thing it has done so far, but they felt it was needed to beat Microsoft on price. Right off the bat, I will not be buying one nor will the majority of players - it will be either a failed or an extremely niche accessory. Meanwhile, every single Xbox One game could be designed for camera and microphone functionality, should it be desired.

Otherwise, I hope the PS4 GUI is better than the PS3's was. Relative to the advertising first, player second interface of the 360, it may not be that bad, but it is hardly a winner on its own. We actually picked up a Sony television two years ago and I was slightly surprised that it had a nearly identical layout. Compared to our other televisions (Samsung, Vizio) and those of our friends (LG, Samsung) it is easily the slowest, clunkiest layout. We picked up a Sony Blu-Ray player this past November and it was just as bad. Compared to other competitors, much less what cell phones are pushing, you come away realizing how little attention has been focused on this aspect of the experience. If they are smart, you will have a smart, fun experience the moment you turn on that system.

Originally hoping to flip the Xbox One to pay for the PS4,
Ray For limited production runs, X1 systems seem widely available...

I really hope some company decides to get its crap together with regards to hardware quality control.

I blew through two PS3s fairly quickly (first, a clicking hard drive and, second, a system that would lock up after 30 minutes of playing,) but the third one was a keeper.

On the Xbox side of things, I actually am on my fourth system - one had a bad hard drive, one went red ring, and then I switched to the slim model which ultimately had an internal power failure (power supplies turn red upon connecting to the system.) The sad thing is that, given how I am predominately a PC gamer, my 360 systems received very little play. The original 20GB unit I received back from he red ring still works, though I had already given it away by the time my slim died. However, the slim model, though it was outside of the warranty, easily had less than 50 hours of actual playtime.

Meanwhile, even covered in total dust, the stupid Wii has worked from day one.
Remember when MS would deny there even was an issue?
On a side note, the 10 year lifespan is more than likely. They obviously aren't talking about peak, premier development focus time, but the period of relatively high utilization and still having new titles, even if few and of terrible quality, for the system. The prior generation essentially did the same thing.

Wondering how many of MS' sales are due to poor hardware design,
Ray
