I hate Microsoft mouses.

I think Razer products are made for martians.

But they're all better than a red haired step-child, baby eating, pop-tart loving, 3dfx supporting trackball!
The only - ONLY - thing worse is a pad use. FREAKS.

I have nothing nice to say about Halo, but the $20 credit on SGM2 is very nice.

Noting JC2 has a $15 credit, but still hesitant to buy it...

I'm telling you - remake the original Pong, but make it take two hours for the ball (square?) to cross the screen.

Under five minutes of coding and YEARS of gameplay! Knowing how long people will need can have to play this game, you could totally charge $1000.00 or more for it.

The first company to do this will become the richest company in the world! And then it can use that cash to buy the world!

Well, unless that is a totally stupid idea and completely misses the point...
At what point do these people just f*ck off? Is a CD worth $50?
Wondering if art, gameplay, or fun will ever have a place next to greed ,

Be sure to grab the 10.3s when you can.

It magically fixed my Metro 2033 v-sync issue and it's such a world of difference (graphically, not game wise ) to not have tearing on the screen.
Wow, the last chapter of this game is cheap.

13. Re: F.3.A.R. Revealed? Mar 24, 2010, 17:38 Ray Marden

F2 was a decent shooter, but a bit jumbled together and FAR removed from the quality of the original.

Pointless mech bits, significantly easier combat, an even wonkier story, lackluster boss fights, less impressive graphics (relative to time of release,) heavy handed with scripts, etc.

I loved F.E.A.R., I played it 3 or 4 times and beat it on the highest difficultly, but F2 did not feel like the same game and definitely wasn't remotely memorable.
There was nothing wrong with the game, but it had nothing special.
Having played it the one time and barely recalling it,

I have 20GB and, along with the lack of HDMI, this really annoys me.

I just bought a new 640GB drive from Amazon and had it shipped next day for $61 (mind you, I'm cheating with that claim because I am using Prime.)

Meanwhile, Micro$oft wants me to pay ~$0.52/GB? Or just buy an entirely new system? With this being my third Xbox 360 due to hardware issues? A corrupted Live user ID? My previous issues of replacing a first generation Xbox due to hardware issues?
At least my PS3 lets me save my downloaded content...
Umm....yeah...but no thanks,

32. Re: The Witcher 2 Trailer Mar 24, 2010, 13:11 Ray Marden

Well, the combat is fairly broken, but you aim to get a gear/combo setup that lets you bypass the many flaws. It occasionally has Gothic-like moments of perma-stun chaings by multiple NPCs.

There is less skill involved than just making sure you have the right combination - once you do, you just click whenever the combo needs it and it's basically insta-win.

Certain fights, especially early on, can really favor consumables as well. To this day, the first boss (yes, the stupid dog thingie) was the most difficult fight I've had in the game. I had tried various strategies and routinely had my ass handed to me. However, I then tried one potion I had not previously used and it becamse an instant win. Rolleyes

Towards the end, I had the best custom sword as well as some improved gear - other than worrying about an occasional clusterf*ck, it was just combat by numbers.
Then you just become a sword wielding god.
Recalling the elite plant thingie in the swamp as being extremely mis-placed,

Uhh...there have been entire pages dedicated to the patching process for The Witcher.

The problems really boil down to there being multiple SKUs, the developer being lazy about releasing one collected, comprehensived patch, and a few of the mini-patches/added content intending to be installed at certaion version. Some of the newer versions aren't as bad, but the original releast was a total pain to do correctly.
The developer having occasionally bad links is also fun.
I realize it's a small team, but I see various other teams do this, too. If you want people to play your game, don't make it hard to actually start the game.

Noting the DRM people could learn a thing or two about that as well,
Ray

You do know v-sync will lower your refresh, right?

Joking aside, have you tried enabling v-sync via the ATI drivers? I attempted to do this after having ongoing tearing issues in Metro 2033 (yet another downer,) but I did not have any tearing in JC2.

I am playing at 1920x1200 with seemingly maximum options (I think one shadow setting was at medium, but everything else was high) and I was pulling down a high framerate without any issues.
The grappling hook is a little...strange.

I hate to give any credibility to that heathen Creston , but the demo was actually pretty fun. I had no idea WTF I was doing, but there is a lot of fun, stupid action to be had in a very large, colorful world.

Had Creston actually bothered to say anything positive about this game in advance , I would definitely trade in my Metro 2033 purchase for JC2.

I can see it having some long term issues - how many times can you make the same things blowdedededed up? But this would definitely be fun at first and in small spurts thereafter.
Sandbox FTW.
Willing to buy it on sale,

Just for you, I am downloading the demo and will give it a whirl.

I vaguely recall playing a demo of the first game, but it seemed really, really rough and I wrote it off as console or budget fare long ago.

It's ironic that I now own the original game via one of the Steam deals and never played it.

Here's to hoping it wows me, although it probably would need to at this point - I've already got quite a few games that I have yet to complete, much less really start.

16. Re: On Game Budgets Mar 23, 2010, 19:42 Ray Marden

Ultimately, I think it speaks to poor management than anything else.

Have realistic budgets, have realistic timeframes, enforce milestones, keep promises, correctly factor in time, figure out a sensible approach to DRM, figure out a sensible approach to used games, figure out the best cost level, set realistic goals, determin the scope of your game in advance, set a plan to continue on/bring something new/have a quirky angle, stop 24 hour crunch times, work on maintaining the talent, etc.

What does the industry expect? $200.00 games with another $75.00 in DLC crap? $300M budgets? For a single game?

At some point, reality has to be, well, real.
If I set forth a plan of failure, I will certainly pay the price.
Not particularly caring about the suits or advertising budget,

Yes, the site finally lets me upload the super futuristic file type known as a JPEG.

As for the forums....meh. I honestly have to bow before everybody that even remotely manages to keep discussions consistent with a "flat" view.

But I still think the forums are tedious when viewed as a "thread" and I don't think the "flat" view is particularly elegant. I don't know, I guess it's just me, but I personally find it a chore to post here and I've had many a friend or colleague joke about the forums here (and not just in reference to my being sad, pathetic gamer.)
Without constant quoting, it's the difference between discussing and just commenting.
Guessing I'll go play in the tar pits,
Ray

3. Re: Game Reviews Mar 23, 2010, 18:40 Ray Marden

It works - that's one plus - but it's otherwise a fairly generic shooter wrapped in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. clothing. Every now and then it hits a good stride and makes you feel that it has some potential, but then one of its many flaws pops up and gets on your nerves.

  • The chapters are broken up into numerous loading zones, many of which are only 5 minutes long. This is compounded by fairly linear levels.

  • The stealth mechanic is totally broken. The moment you are spotted, every enemy on the level knows where you are and will shoot you on sight. Literally, you can get to an enemy five minutes later, be completely stealthed (confirmed via in-game watch mechanic,) and be sniped from forty feet away because you previously broke stealth.

  • The pacing of combat is extremely inconsistent. You infrequently get a moment of exhiliration, you frequently have long stretches of doing nothing, and a lot of the mutant sequences are just clusterf*cks.

  • The graphics are okay, but not amazing and it feels fairly unoptimized.

  • You have pre-designated weapon slots with few options. Weapons themselves are a bit inconsistent from shot to shot.

  • No DX11 for us.
It's not all bad, but it gives you an idea of some of the problems this game has. The setting is very interesting, but generally completely unused. From there, you can definitely play the game, but it's very inconsistent and most definitely not what it should be. Those few moments when things all line up, it's a very thrilling game, but those are few and far between. Otherwise, it's fairly generic shooter, but with a nice wrapper.

If nothing else, it feels like it needed a good sixh months of tweaking to get a fairly strong game.

Just finding it too inconsistent and too simple,
    Ray

I liked the first game, but I hope this one really pushes it farther.

As interesting as the game was in regards to some aspects, there were a lot of other fairly blatant limitations (combat, weapons, quest bugs, peculiar story scripts, etc.)

The first game was really just a city romp with a quick visit to a local lake - if nothing else, they need to open up the world. Making it more dynamic and varied would be a bonus, too.
The game was very linear and repetitive with some crude mechanics.
Rolling my eyes at the continued sex hunt...,
