News Comments > StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty CE & Pricing
47. Re: StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty CE & Pricing Apr 8, 2010, 17:22 Ray Marden

I certainly won't pay $60 for a PC game.

No licensing fee + scaling back of features + increasing number of ports + increasing cases of consol'itis = my paying 20% more?

Uhhh...thanks. but no thanks.

Atlernately, if I am going to be expected to pay "full" (console) price, I expect to have a "full" PC game - top notch mouse and keyboard support, no significant DRM hassles, efficient code, mod support, robust multiplayer, levels/design that utilize my PC's hardware, etc.

My purchases bear this out, too. I keep up to date with a number of discount tracking sites and my average purchase price, console and PC games combined, is probably somewhere around the $40 mark.

I'll argue the greed/abuse angle, but from a business sense, what new and innovative things are these companies doing to entice and amaze me? Again, less features and higher prices? Juggle
But hey, if you have lower standard, more power to you.
Having happily avoided the Starcraft furor,
Ray

Was the stealth component tossed out? If this is just run and gun action with aliens - completely the worst part of the first game - I know I'll get bored with this one fairly quickly.

Wow, really? Just how petty and selfish do you need to be to pressure Zoo Weekly?

I was actually very interested in this game (excluding concerns about its long development,) but it's an instant no-buy now.

Ugh, could you imagine?

Die headcrab, die!

But wait...before we kill this headcrab, let's talk about the type of crowbar to use today. And though often neglected, we'll make sure we have an anti-blood coating as originally designed by Prasanth, the lesser known of the four Nihilanth brothers. But fret not for he spent the latter part of the 30th century studying....

News Comments > Saturday Mobilization
11. Re: Saturday Mobilization Apr 3, 2010, 20:48 Ray Marden

I think it varies in all cases.

At its current price and performance, the iPad is a toy for the "cool" people. It otherwise makes it harder for me to access my information, wouldn't let me do my job, lacks basic connectivity, can't multitask, etc.

At times, I think Apple has come in and shaken up a market - it's offered a different view of things or reintroduced the human element to markets.

However, it more recently has become cult obsessed with furthering the Apple name with little care for much else.

When is the last time Apple tried to appeal to me on gaming, price, performance, customization and/or options? I'm not particularly beholden to the non-Apple companies, but they generally offer me these things. Likewise, of all the companies I don't end up purchasing from, Apple is the only one that insults me for not doing so...
Really, what other company acts like Apple?
Thinking of many other things I would spend the equivalent money on,

I hope they release a pre-release demo for this one.

It looks nicer graphically and it certainly talks up how "cool" it is, but I still didn't see anything to remove my concerns of this being another limited, confined, and linear game.

Graphics are nice, but that wouldn't be in my top ten things that really needed to be improved upon from the first game.
Talk some smack and improve your graphics = All you need for a sale?

News Comments > PC Conviction Delay Explained
16. Re: PC Conviction Delay Explained Apr 1, 2010, 18:03 Ray Marden

At least it isn't linked to the DRM - we have no reason to expect any improvement and can look towards the same limited, brute force approach that currently exists.

Well, we can just chalk it up to pure, outright hatred for the PC market (and the continuation of promoting the consoles over the PC.)

Whew, I'm glad we have that cleared up!
This space for sale.
Just amazed that people are buying iPads...,

Ubi need to change it. Apparently I hadn't patched my version of AC2 this weekend. I had been playing the game for about thirty minutes when I was booted to the desktop and watched the Ubi client close down. I immediately logged back in, but sure enough, all my progress had been lost.

Not the best way to treat the customer, in my opinion.
And certainly not givine me the impression it is fighting for my $$$.

They talk a good game and you can make your toon look "hip," but this seems really mindless.

Just stand and shoot - eventually sum'tin sum'tin will blowded up gud. AWWW YAYYYYEAH!

Joking aside, I feel that I've seen this game numerous times, but hopefully this is the most current/evolved version of it. However, these types of games never hold my interest for long.
Why is it always the devolution of society? Is this what people want?

News Comments > Half-Life Pulse Detected
13. Re: Half-Life Pulse Detected Mar 27, 2010, 10:08 Ray Marden

I'm jut concerned by his vague wording - I don't look back at HL1 and think "I really loved the scare in that game."

I just hope they do something with this once-franchise, though. HL2 was a very good game, but I still have a lot of issues with it as a continuation or evolution from HL1 with regards to the story and world.

As for HL3 being episodes one through three, where to start? The delays? The inconsistency? Repetitive story? The fact that we still don't have the third one and nobody is publicly talking abot it? Lack of cohesion between releases?

If I were to explain Half-Life to a non-gamer, I could completely convey HL1, but HL2 would make some huge leaps I wouldn't necessarily have answers for (unless you cound "'cuz that's how it is now.") And for HL3.1 and 3.2, I'd really just be explaining how I was running all over the place just because.

I hope they either kill off Ep3 of just push some crap out of the door so they can work on a true sequel. And if they have zero passion for the franchise, I would actively encourage them to sell it off or hand it out to somebody that does.
But maybe they are? LFD2 can't possibly require the entire company.

News Comments > NVIDIA 400 Series Reviews
15. Re: NVIDIA 400 Series Reviews Mar 27, 2010, 09:51 Ray Marden

Well, the 470 sucks. You can pay less and get equal performance. Edit: And could have done so as far back as six months ago.

As for the 480, it's a speed bump, but only towards the highest end of the spectrum where it won't matter as much. Even then, it has a hefty price tag, significant power requirements, is very loud, and has serious heat concerns.

Toss in concerns about long term performance (yield issues combined with the heat,) the long development time (chipset might have long term benefits, but is very late for this generation,) and the smack talking from NvIdIa - this is a fairly underwhelming release. If ATI cuts prices or does a slight speed increase...

Nobody is wrong for getting one, it will do good in games, but it is hardly the economical choice nor does it have a great price to performance ratio.

I think the future looks better for NVIDIA - it has a new chipset, it can refine it, a lot of the features are forward looking, and it will play politics with CUDA - but this card is meaningless for a lot of users, especially so with the current crop of games.
I'm not fan of ATI and was hoping to replace my 5850, but not anymore.
Feeling all of Eve Online is just waiting on training ,

Who cares? The terrible moust acceleration in this game is far worse than any outages that my have occurred.

Nothing like it being 2010 and realizing developers still do not have a clue that maybe, just maybe, games should actually be able to control their characters...
Yes, yes, let's make a DRM "control" reference to be cliche!

Failure.

I guess they're almost even with the market, but with the added benefits of more negative items, but NvIdIa dropped the ball in this generation.

Yes, ATI has some supply issues and needs to push a new architecture sooner than later. Yes, NVIDIA has some nice long-term promise.

But for now? The next year? Current generation games? The $270 I spent on my 5850 is a far, far better deal than the lackluster 470. I guess the 480 isn't quite as bad, but is it worth the price, heat, and power? Not in my book.

See you in the next round of cards, Nvidia...
ATI still annoys me, but nvidia is just gives us too little too late.
Shaking my head at all the lost time and smack talking; wondering where the "Wow" is,
