Eh, I'll wait and see.

I realize that is "supposed" to be cool, but it's nothing I haven't seen a million times over (movies, games, anime, etc.)

Looking towards the game component, this really doesn't show anything, it's a slightly different take on DE than my own, and I can see various ways this could go bad.
How about an overpowered stealth mechanic coupled with mindless action?
But I'll wait and see. Given that other game that used the Deus Ex name as well as some of the comments that have been made over the years, I am definitely skeptical.

Waiting to see,
Ray

Early reviews seem to be varying quite a bit - it seems to have that "gem in the rough" feeling to it, perhaps with quite a bit of rough.

I'm somewhat interested in the title at this point, but not until I can pick it up for $30 or so or I finish all the games I currently have.
It reminds me of those Mission Impossible games.
Enjoying SMG2 quite a bit,

I'll give Apple credit for creating another tech fad, but I don't think it is generally good for the users on the whole. For $600, it's an overpriced media toy, you can build a good desktop for the same amount, and it certainly doesn't offer the work functionality of a laptop.

But people are buying it so...
I can appreciate it as a $300 to maybe $400 toy, but it's otherwise a waste.
Shrugging,

News Comments > F.E.A.R. 3 Interview, Trailer
4. Re: F.E.A.R. 3 Interview, Trailer May 29, 2010, 18:24 Ray Marden

This looks fairly hokey and it's painfully obvious that this doesn't give a damn about maintaining the combat from F.E.A.R. (not that the sequel did this either.)

Obviously, this isn't a F.E.A.R. game. For the new type of game it is trying to be, it better have an amazing demo else this just seems like more FPS shovelware that I won't look at until it gets discounted to a $20 price level.
Something like Wolfenstein.
This may get eaten up by the "Who cares if it doesn't maintain the core values of the game, it's a competent shooter" crowd, but it's sad to see F.E.A.R. killed off this way. I'm tired of turning main characters into hobos, F.E.A.R. shouldn't have you play with Fettel, gameplay shouldn't be about absorbing enemies, I don't want more mech play, etc.

Thinking it says a lot when such low quality screenshots are released,
Ray

I'm certainly not buying it at the price. I'm certainly not spending that for an accessory item. I'm certainly not paying that given how far into this console's life cycle it is.

Compared to Sony's system, this thing is all gesturing and doesn't have any buttons! Looking at the low cost, included for free, available to every owner Wii, this makes no sense.

I might buy this thing for $60 with an included killer app and a wide range of fantastic upcoming games. But in all reality, I am not looking to buy Natal in general and even less so at that price.
This sounds like a better idea for the next system - not this one.
Glad no recessions are affecting the game companies...,

I sure don't.

It wasn't as good as the first and the stupid focus on MP just reinforces the disregard they have for this franchise.
Maybe if they gave us a real sequel. You know, something *after* the first game.
More likely to replay the original than the sequel,

I played around with it for a little bit last night. On one hand, it feels like a game I will enjoy (you get a sense of what they were going for,) but it also has a number of rough edges (pacing, voice acting, graphics.)

Ultimately, you can tell it had a bit of a tortured development, but it does offer some hope for the future if the sales are adequate.
Which they may not with all the games out right now or very shortly.
I got it for $30 from Amazon ($10 discount, $10 price matching, and $10 game credit, free shipping) so I think it will be worth it, but it really isn't what it should have been.

Eager to continue playing, but aware of many faults,

If I have both systems, why would I want the inferior version?

I admit there is a range of "nearly identical," but if one is obviously better than the other, I would rather get the better one.

Playing across all four systems, there can be some fairly significant differences between releases (to say nothing of the times where one version is drastically inferior.)
Or do you primarily play on the Wii?
Wishing the games all ran at a true 1080P with a rock hard framerate,

This better have an amazing demo because, looking at it now, it just looks like your stereotypical mindless shooter based entirely around marketing.

Does nobody out there understand what made F.E.A.R so great was its combat? And if you think that just means "MORE OF IT WITH MOBS ALL OVER TO GO PEW PEW PEW AT," you have totally missed the point.

Rest in peace, F.E.A.R..
It's definitely making the second game look good.

Don't forget other options such as "different," "new," or "more."

As I've stated before, after trudging through the terrible combat, bugs, and flawed mechanics that are Gothic 3, I hope anything and everything related to the creation of anything Gothic fails.
Give me a $50.00 refund and a han written apology note; only then will I reconsider.
Wondering why JC2 consideres itself too good for a $30 price tag,

News Comments > EVE Online Tyrannis Delayed
4. Re: EVE Online Tyrannis Delayed May 15, 2010, 10:10 Ray Marden

It's an interesting twist on things, but in a lot of ways, Eve Online is just the anti-wow. Wow's strenths are Eve's weaknesses and vice versa. It's really quite amusing.

That aside, they really need to work on the player introduction, the ring of death that is lowsec, and there needs to be more content/options for users. I do like the "do anything" approach, but they could try to have it look something more than an Excel spreadsheet.
In-game AA would be nice, too.
Without the game being my main focus (I can go play WoW or various other single-player games,) often "playing" Eve is just logging in to set my skill queue and coming back in a week (or four) when it's done.

Still waiting on the WoW killer,
Ray

News Comments > Raven Hears the Call of Duty?
5. Re: Raven Hears the Call of Duty? May 13, 2010, 17:06 Ray Marden

I seriously question Raven's passion for any game these days, but it is very good at pushing out quick, competent, generic, on-budget releases.

It's not like CoD has exactly done anything revolutionary with gameplay so I don't see it being much of a gap between CoD and Raven.

Mind you, the online crowd will be extremely demanding, but they're generally finnicky anyway.
Remember when Raven had passion?
Skeptical of it being a great game, but thinking they can likely turn out a fine CoD,

News Comments > New Mass Effect 2 DLC Next Month
8. Re: New Mass Effect 2 DLC Next Month May 13, 2010, 12:56 Ray Marden

Meh.

Between the horrendous planet scanning (just drop it entirely at this point,) lackluster story (90% of the "game" is just acquiring party members for that remaining 10% of story,) and the complete joke that was the $7 Kasumi pack (with a separate blurt about how much thought they put into it,) I'm definitely over ME2 at this point.

Give me more areas. Give me more levels. Drop the pointless scanning. Drop the pointless quests for a pittance of money to spend on a lackluster upgrade at a random merchant on a planet. Don't hype your "plus" save system and then simultaneously toss out everything my character was (this is referencing the total disconnect from my female character's homosexual love interest.) Make the ship seem more alive, not just a cookie cutter area for the next DLC character. Don't charge $7 for a 35 minute DLC which is only about 25 minutes long when you cut out the planet scanning. Make upgrades worthwhile. Make the combat dynamic. Let me control the look of the gear. Teach my characters the zen art of helmet removal. Don't gut the Citadel. Make my teammates useful. Don't use a weapon to sell me on the game. Give me some serious gray decisions. Let me have a real impact on the world. Make the threat real and significant. Make Cereberus useful.

I could go on and on, but there are a lot of faults with this game that BioWare seems content to ignore. I can forgive some of this stuff if this was a new game, but this is the second game that is supposed to run with what we started in the first game. But in a lot of ways, it feels like I'm playing the same game, albeit with heavy DLC focus and a really confined world.

Am I two-thirds of the way through my epic saga? Not at all.
Really, this game is just DA in space and with less gameplay.
Enjoying the game, but not thinking it's the BETSTS GAHME EVAR!!!!111,

6. Value System Building May 10, 2010, 12:52 Ray Marden

One of my coworkers has a an extremely old computer (4+ years) and is looking to upgrade on a budget. From what I can gather, he intends to re-use his XP disc and has a more recent SATA HD.

Being capped at $800.00, what would all of you suggest for a value system? Due to the age of his system, he will need everything (MB, CPU, GPU, memory, PSU, and case.) He's a bit of a neophyte so I won't be pushing things like dual GPUs, overclocking, etc.
I'm guessing still Intel?
Going to donate one of the various unused DVD-R/RW players I have sitting around,

6. Re: Codemasters Lawsuit May 10, 2010, 12:43 Ray Marden

As stated, this seems incredibly flimsy. Only if there was a specific non-compete agreement or some IP that they can show was taken/is being used.

Otherwise, Codemasters is just crying wolf, although it may very well simply be a legal maneuver to restrict Playground Games and/or hurt it financially via court fees.

Codemasters: We reserve the right to dismiss you without any notice, but you aren't allowed to ever use your experience and skills anywehere else ever!
Given how vague this is, it doesn't make Codemasters look good.

9. Re: Achievements Change the Way I Play May 9, 2010, 08:19 Ray Marden

In contrast, I wonder about the mentality that seems to focus on challenge above anything and everything else.

Simply for challenge, do you play games using only the keyboard? Do you play with only one hand? Do you remap the keys to make it as hard as possible to play the game? Do you want a game with such perfect, omnipotent AI that the only way to complete the game is to memorize the location of every opponent through repeatedly dying?

I think challenge is definitely an important part of the overall mixture - god-like AI makes a game completely tedious whereas the lack of any threat/challenge turns the game into a paint-by-numbers snooze fest - but I rarely see these editorial pieces ever really delve much into what makes a game good rather than just ranting on about how things are too easy and how much cooler it was to waste time on questionable mechanics.

Looking at achievements, I wish they were relegated more to simply tracking intended gameplay aspects if not removed entirely, but I freely admit to the "carrot as a reward" mentality they tend to foster with a lot of gamers.

My real issue is that they tend to be a fairly blatantly artificial way to extend the game and/or add a game-unrelated e-peen comparison aspect. Why, when I am trying to save the world or immerse myself in the environment, would I want to be encouraged to jump up and down on a car five-hundred times? Why, if my goal is to protect this person, would I want to be encouraged to lead the NPC to a mine? If I am playing an onling game as a test of personal skill, what sense does it make to intentionally imbalance the other player with better gear/health/whatever simply because that player has run the game ten more hours than I have? Once I have mastered a game and have consumed all the available content, why does the developer think I want to go back and immediately rehash the same experience, albeit with a fairly silly, unrealistic limitation?
May as well just point coins or stars in a level at that point.
For me, those things tend to break the world, speak to the design failure of the developer, make me question the actual length or intent of a game, etc.

Always looking for something new and different, not silly rehashes of the same thing,
Ray
