News Comments > Dragon Age II Demo
126. Re: Dragon Age II Demo Feb 25, 2011, 05:55 Ray Marden

I would question what we're looking for on these boards, at least from a critique standpoint.

I have four gaming systems and play a wide range of games. Certainly, I've played amazing games and I've played utterly terrible games. Likewise I've played everything in between. For most/all of these games, I can "tolerate" them or even find good points. However, I can just as easily cut away the fat and find numerous faults. Likewise, having such a wide range of games available, I find that something just being "okay" doesn't necessarily equate to a purchase.

Because of the wide range of games I have played and that I have access to, I frequently want the absolute best game, something that offers some component that is relatively unique/well done, or something with a very good price to worth rating as determined by any nymber of factors.

Shifting perspective back to Blue's, I don't want to just know if a given game is "okay." I'm sure they generally all are. But I am interested in the above items, discussing the mertis/shortcomings of a game, and generally dissecting what the industry produces.
I do think SV enjoys fighting and insultins people, though.

News Comments > PC Fable III in May
10. Re: PC Fable III in May Feb 25, 2011, 05:43 Ray Marden

I wouldn't say Fable 2 is great, but I would definitely say it is interesting. I has a charm to it and screams out about never realized potential.

But then you play the third game and see the strange things they focuses on, the major items they ignored, and the established items that were made worse.

From that perspective, F2 is deeply flawed, but an interesting experience.
But yes, childish and simplistic. Quite confused as well.
Noting that no RPG fan will be blown away,

It's a flawed series, but if you are even remotely interested, buy the second game and skip this one.

They refined a number of things, but then pitched the story out the window and made the relationship aspect extremely tedious (a true feat in and of itself.)
Still a game with big promises and questionable execution.

I am certainly far more interested in this than DA2.

My only nitpick is the environments which all seem a bit similar and/or unoriginal.......but there really isn't too much you can do with swords and dragons. Regardless, it is a TES game which means hours upon hours upon hours of gameplay.

I think Oblivion was a fantastic step in the right direction and, like others have said, I hope they continue improving the combat balance, leveling aspect, and manage to make it feel like a vibrant world.

Eyeing the 6950 line for my next upgrade...,

News Comments > Dragon Age II Demo
54. Re: Dragon Age II Demo Feb 22, 2011, 21:51 Ray Marden

I'll have to try this again on the weekend when I can give it my full attention.

I'm not sure what technical problems people are having, but it was fine on my system. Well, little pauses between cinematics and gameplay and my warrior was a bit slow/stupid in switching targets, but it was stable under DX11 and high quality (game would not let me select very high quality.)

Otherwise, I am not impressed so far. Upfront, I always had issues with DA - it certainly is not the spiritcual successor to BG and it didn't have much meat to it once you took out the "origin" story (made all the more obvious by ME2 being the same game, but in space, and their being completely dropped from this game) - but I cut it a lot of slack because it was the start of the series and I rationalized as a hybrid of old and new.

But this demo, it's okay, but it doesn't feel like anything special. There is some disconnect by not creating my charcter, its mindless action, the warrior is way over the top, things are way too easy, you get the teenie bopper adrenaline rush cinematics of killing all the big monsters, the interface feels more minimalized than streamlined, leveling up is clunky if you do it out of the order the game wants, your brother is an obtuse stereotype, the art introductions make me feel disconnected from the world, etc. Lastly, I know I can adjust this in the menu, but I really hate the damned default camera and movement controls. I may go to hell for this but, WoW does it a lot better.

I wasn't going to buy this on day one period because of the BS with the EAWare "Sorry, you're a filthy pirate - even if you purchase it on day one - because you didn't preorder three months in advance. No DLC for you!" However, the early reviews all came out great so I was hoping I was just being a pretentious fool and would eagerly await the GotY edition. But after playing the demo, at least initially, I'm thinking $20 entry point.

Maybe there is a really good game in there, but the initial impressions this demo gives are all bad ones. It just plays like a rough, not particularly pretty, third-person Diablo clone in some generic fantasy land.

Like I said, I'll give it another spin later this week, but this is a mediocre demo. Just as DA wasn't BG, DA2 doesn't feel like DA. Who am I? What did I learn? How did this come about? What new culture is there to experience? What personal look for my character can I create? What new tactics/AI/gameplay is there to experience?

I'm looking for these things and more, but all the demo offers me is "Dude, shut up! ZOMG, i'm totally 1337! RARGH! Hellz yeah! EAT MY KICK ASS SWORD, BIZNITCHEZ!!!"
I can definitely wait this one out no problem.
Disliking the demo, but not sure what to make of the game,
Ray

7. Re: Risen 2, Art, Subtitle, Details Feb 21, 2011, 14:25 Ray Marden

Or heaven forbid they work on the story and gameplay instead of trying to increase the graphic quality...

More than anything, I wonder how well firearms will really play out in this game. Combat has always been a major weakness of their games (compounded with there being a large amount of mindless hack and slash) and I cannot help but wonder how well this will play out.

The day the game bugs and suddenly and entire town is angry at my character and are sharpshooting him with pinpoint accuracy from a mile away with a pistol...game over.
Or the day a crab kills me with a shotgun in a cave...
Alternately, I could see them going the Fable route in which case there is a question of why even bother in the first place?

Skeptical,
Ray

News Comments > Valve: Portal 2 "Finished"
8. Re: Valve: Portal 2 Feb 20, 2011, 15:55 Ray Marden

Well, we all know they're working on the next game period.

Personally, the nicest thing would be if they just scrapped any "episode 3" mindset and jumped straight into HL3 - new engine, new story, a full game, etc.
Or should I say HL4 since we've already seen 2/3 of HL3? Lulz.
Episodic gaming still have potential, but only when they can actually make it episodic - short wait, decreased price, a few hours of high quality gampley, etc.

Hoping the next game is more than just "Run, Gordon, run!,"

I'm hoping this one is really good, but yeah, it just makes me think that this is Borderlands 1.5.

And will there be any type of deep/unique component to the gameplay or will it be just straigh forward shooting? It is a shame seeing nice tech being used on a simple shooter, a shooter that I feel I just played.
Fallout, too, obviously.
Wishing this game felt more different or original ,

me R watch U2ube vid an now me iz dumm feeling

But joking aside, I could see some appeal if it was a really fast paced slaughter fest in a huge environment...but a lot of this loots a bit confined (or just restricted by all the miscellaneous geometry) and more focused on wasting time getting that ZOMGWTFBBQ!!!!!! kill credit.

I'll certainly try the demo, but this is looking like something I can wait to hit the $20 range.
It isn't deep, smart, fast, or unique. It's just seems...stupid.

Another day, another round of lies, contradictions, and ignoring day one bugs...

I generally like the game (though this expansion not as much,) but dealing with Blizzard's crappy customer support is getting really tiresome.

Meanwhile, go read a list of "blue" posts and see how they spend most of their time joking around and regressing the general forum community.
Wah wah.

I hope something comes out one day - I really liked the first one and this could be a really fun series. The story was weak and the combat portions really hurt the game, but I loved the feeling of first-person immersion in such a quick, vibrant world.

Meanwhile, let's make more games about America shooting everything...
I beat it three times and go revisit it every now and then.

They aren't "wrong" to do this, but I think so lowly of this game that it just cheapens it even further. Instead of focusing on a well crafted single player experience, it makes me think of beating individual levels one by one and then playing them with another toon for ZOMGWTFBBQ!!!! explosions.

Poor F.E.A.R. - at least I'll always have the first game.
I'll watch reviews, but I'm not expecting to buy this on day one.
Thinking the second was a bit generic and this one is just silly,

Hey, I would like a sequel to Half-Life, but I will gladly play Portal 2 in the meantime.

Portal 2 and Duke Nukem Forever (shut up, I hate you all...) are two titles I cannot wait to play.

Yeah, I hope it ends up being a good game so I will end up having something nice to play when the GotY edition comes out in a year.

Otherwise, I have no intention of buying this game during the initial release. I forgave a number of the shortcomings of the first game because it was - literally - the origin of my character...which BioWare just shrugged at and immediately disregarded for this game. Additionally, requiring a two month preorder just to have a more complete game speeks to the sheer greed of the company. They were already planning on cutting out half the game to sell it back to you via DLC, but that wasn't enough for them - their business plan actively promoted screwing over day one purchasers.

Thanks, but no thanks. GotY or nothing at this point.
And if it isn't amazing, even more shame on them.

So...apparently I was the only one that wanted less Olyphant in the voice?

As for the game, it looks intriguing. I gave up any hopes of a sequel to DE, but I'm hoping this is a smart or more robust shooter that pays respectable homage to the first game.

25. Re: Assassin's Creed Brotherhood PC Interview Jan 31, 2011, 12:48 Ray Marden

I wasn't terribly impressed with the first game (buggy as heck and it felt like a console fad,) but some of the tweaks made the second game enjoyable (coupled with me buying it half off.)

At this point, though, I can wait a bit before I play a third game. The combat is still a joke, the story is ludicrous, I don't care about the main characters, I don't enjoy the endless hunting of pointless items, and some of the usual bugs are still there. However, this newest game has even less appeal because it seems like a rehash of the previous one, but now with more multi-player.
Enzio deserves to die.
I just don't have any significant interest in this one and I can't believe they stuck with the same character/settings. Maybe when this one is $10 or less. As for future games, they better present a different setting and character coupled with some significant gameplay improvements. Otherwise, I feel like I have put in my time with this series and have seen everything is has to offer.

Shrugging,
Ray

Aye - this was a very generic platform game. I think the scores for the various platforms ran around 60%? I'm sure it was relatively good for how little time and money was put into it, but this always seemed like a tie-in cash grab.
It makes Tron 2.0 look like a work of art.
Tron has an interesting world and could spawn a great game one day, but this certainly was not it.

Noting it was immediately bundled into some of the holiday packs,

23. Re: Dragon Age II DLC and System Specs Jan 7, 2011, 11:35 Ray Marden

Meh.

I find it really offensive that I have to pre-order the game some two months ahead of its release to even get that EA considers the full game to be.

To say nothing of all the additional, inevitable DLC...

Or how I found the first game had a weak story, but it was okay since it was the origins of my chracter...which they just tossed out the window with this game.

On a less bitter note, I haven't been amazed by anything I've seen thus far. Hopefully it's a decent action-RPG, but I really object to the mandatory two month pre-order. If I do ever pick this up, it will be a year from now when the GotY edition is released.
I hope this does get dumbed down like ME2 was.
Wondering if this is just a DLC pack turned (bizarre?) sequel,
Ray
