News Comments > The Witcher 2 Preloads & DRM, New GOG.com Publishers [Updated]
24. Re: The Witcher 2 Preloads & DRM, New GOG.com Publishers Coming Apr 14, 2011, 19:29 Ray Marden

Honestly, GoG still irritates me a bit - they don't have games I want, they can end up charging more than I can find a game elsewhere, and then there was their relaunch fiasco...

I am going to be buying TW2, ut this whole "We won't have DRM, but we'll absolutley ensure every other version has it" rubs me the wrong way as well. If you're anti-DRM, be anti-DRM. Otherwise, they are just dicks that are playing a marketing game and otherwise screwing over people that have to buy the physical version for some reason and/or the people that buy the collector's edition.

Personally, I am balancing buying it from Amazon against buying it from GoG. GoG gives me some other junk, but Amazon will end up being cheaper due to the game credit that comes with it, to say nothing of the game credit I already have. If anybody other than GoG offered the same deal, I would preorder from them immediately.
I just have no faith in GoG.
Shrugging,
Ray

Can you just imagine?

Dynamic...player driven...twenty-four hour...realtime...PLANNET SCANNING?????
That would be so win in so many wrong ways.
BioWare needs to figure out its first MMOG before it tries anyhing else. Additionally, the ME world would need to have a fleshed out story and enhanced gameplay, but thosre are nothing things BioWare has been putting its focus on.

Noting that it would not be competitive as a shooeter either,

News Comments > Saturday Metaverse
4. Re: Saturday Metaverse Apr 10, 2011, 00:38 Ray Marden

DS9 is easily the best of all the series when compared side to side without any other handicaps applied. All the other series followed a similar format whereas this was confined to a station that was the point of conflict between a handful of specific races and a port for any/all races they could dig up.
And it had Hawk!
Oherwise, ToS started it all; TNG was extremely consistent, built up the fanbase, and set the bar; Voyager was a weekly "ZOMG we're going to get home this time...oh crap, maybe not" romp that really went nowhere, and Enterprise...I think it meant well, but had all sorts of problems and limitations.

Personally, I think Enterprise was doomed from the start - limited funding, waning interest in the world, scaled back stories, a modern day pre-quel, it went with time travel yet again, etc. Maybe if it was presented in a different way I could care more, but the whole "end of humanity" idea never seemed interesting. I found the roundtable of bad guys to generally be quite laughable.

As for Voyager, I was interested to see what they would do with the world after Janeway's time hopping at the end of Voyager, but that will never happen now since we'll go through at least a decade of alternate retellings what we've already previously seen...

A sad, pathetic nerd,
Ray

News Comments > RAGE Trailer
11. Re: RAGE Trailer Apr 10, 2011, 00:18 Ray Marden

For id, Rage is looking to be one of its best games in the last decade. It is only when I look at the game itself that, other than graphics, I am not sure what I would tell somebody what the great part of the game is. Maybe it will be the ultimate combination of various ideas, but my mind automatically defaults to explaining how it is an updated version of all sorts of other games...

As for Quake, I absolutely loved, loved, loved it as a SP game. I concede that Q2 had more features checked off, but it was yet another generic space marine setting and I think it lacked the creativity of the first game.

I suspect it was just a case of the technology limiting them coupled with 3D being a new thing, but I love the physical interaction with the world, the more angular architecture, focusing on vertical gameplay/mechanics, the mixing of fantasy with technology, a stronger soundtrack, much more varied settings from act to act, etc.
And yeah, being "first" probably helps quite a bit as well.
Still wishing somebody would make a sequel to Quake ,
Ray

Well, the game certainly has guns and a lot of repetitive shooting of identical mutants...
But does it have anything else?
Wondering what makes this game special - graphics aside,

News Comments > Bulletstorm Demo
16. Re: Bulletstorm Demo Apr 4, 2011, 18:13 Ray Marden

Eh, maybe when EA does another 50% sale, but it didn't seem particularly special.

Generic story, generic characters, a language system based around cussing, straight forward gameplay, useless teammates, gameplay that is broken when played like a typical shooter, gameplay based around cool/funny/hyped moments without any other component, etc. Hopefully this is just a demo aspect, but I felt really confined by being pressed into the ground (with the magical ability to leap over environment rubbles) coupled with a spontaneous speed boost in fairly small, linear areas. The framerate was high, but otherwise underwhelming from what I saw. I know I'll to go hell for this, but I vastly prefer the graphics of Crysis 2.

I can understand the niche appeal this title has, but I'm certainly looking for something quite different. I definitely love stealth-based or tactical shooters, but I still enjoy kicking ass. You know, when I am causing massive destruction in place of literally shoving my foot through your anus.

Lastly, I ran into a glitch which stopped me rather drastically. At one point, I want into a group of the guys that explode and I was moved (knocked?) into the air...and left there. It was like the game was still holding me to the flat plane of movement, but at a height that was different than the game world itself.

This could certainly be a game to play co-op with younger friends or something for fifteen minutes of mindless shooting, but not until it hits a $20-$30 price range. I had an idea of what this game was in advance, but I really though I would find some extremely fast, exhilirating gameplay. Instead, there are some building blocks here, but it is all about what "coolness" you bring to the game.
For what I was expecting, this was a real letdown.
Shrugging,
Ray

The Volition videos are an interesting watch.

From my perspective, I really loved what their old games did (Descent and Freespace,) but I absolutely hate the games they've been pushing out in recent years. Ignoring the fact that they just release the two same damn games over and over and over and over and over, I just haven't felt any draw to either SR (urban trash GTA clone) or RF (the first focused on the destruction aspect over everything else and the sequels just read like generic shooters.)
Too bad the market won't support Descent or Freespace.
I don't see myself playing SR any time soon, but I will try RF next time one of the games goes on sale for $5-$10...

Waiting for Portal 2 in the meantime ,

18. Re: The Witcher 2 Specs Mar 27, 2011, 22:21 Ray Marden

Well, this all comes down to shades of gray. Those are only recommended specs and not the minimum...this is a game that is focusing heavily on its graphics...the Core 2 Duos are neck and neck in gaming performance with the initial quad core CPUs...to say nothing of all the other "equivalent" CPU/GPU combinations...

Hoping this game is more than just a prettier single city,
Ray If nothing else, it will be better than DA2.

None of it particularly seems demanding. They're making a clear distinction between what the minimum system will be and what they recommend.

A quad core CPU (or equivalent AMD) and a 4850 are basically two year old (plus) technology...

Having enjoyed Crysis 2 immensely,
Ray Now I'm stuck waiting for Portal 2.

News Comments > Ships Ahoy - Crysis 2
28. Re: Ships Ahoy - Crysis 2 Mar 22, 2011, 19:23 Ray Marden

At least initially, I am enjoying it. I loaded it to "only play 15 minutes"...and next thing I knew, it had been one hour and fifteen minutes.

I really hate how they introduce you to the game, though. The limited edition servers aren't authenticating? Crappy cinematic? Low resolution? Lower detail than the actual gameplay? Going on and on and on....? Giving you minimal control to present a more cinematic experience?

Okay, cool, at least I can control the game no.......WTF WHY AM I WATCHING A DAMN PR0N VIDEO FOR THE SUIT?

But once I got out of that, it has opened up quite a bit. I want to tweak the FoV, but it's generally an improvement how they have streamlined the various abilities to work real time rather than having to be selected one by one.

Obviously, the game looks utterly gorgeous on Extreme, I am curious to see how well the physics and environmental interaction work, and it seems like there could be potential for quite a number of suit/weapon upgrades.

I'm annoyed that I have that stupid "work" stuff this week and I will gladly sink my weekend into what I've seen thus far.
And Portal 2 and then Duke Nukem Forever? HELL YEAH.
Loving, loving, loving my new i7-2600k and 2GB 6950,
Ray

We can get into shades of gray or semantics here, but is anybody trying to argue that the current system isn't corrupt? And by having a political structure/contry that gives power to the wealthy, it's a completely stacked, self-fulling cycle.

Unfortunately, I find humans to be generally naive and selfish so the capitalist model does motivate them to a certain crude, base extent. Even with that, I would still argue for a system where there were not such disparieties between the bottom and the top and one that maintained high basic standards and then left a free market for non-essential or secondary items.

In contrast, how educated is the general populace? What is the health of the general populace? (More importantly what is the price to performance ratio of healthcare in this country?) How much of a stabling effect does the country have on a geo-political basis? What are the general housing standards like? What is the internal/local economy like? How strong is industry? How ingenious is the energy plan?

Don't get me started on the irony of this highly Christian country that doesn't remotely follow its own stated beliefs...
Seriously, if he did exist, what would Jesus do???
Putting on my tin foil hat and watching humans overpopulate the planet,

Kill planet scanning? Wut wut?!? Didn't they tell you? They're creating a dynamically generating system for it. That's how they cut down the development time - they're putting a few months into this system and it will generate half the content of the game! ZOMG!
This is just a general scanning bash and not a ME-specific bash.

They've been passing them out like candy - I got two from Amazon, one from EA, and I think I saw a contest for an invite at some news site.

Is anybody actually interested in this game? It seems like a bit turn from what Spore was sold as, it's been floating around development for some time (screenshots here or there, but no significant reports,) and it looks a bit generic.

Did anybody that played Spore think this was the direction they needed to go?
Obviously, I am not remotely interested.

I realize I don't have much grounds for this, but I was hoping for something good with this game. Yeah, you can nitpick the story, but at least it was mildly different in that the USA was being attacked instead of the opposite.

However, the reviews have generally been lukewarm with regards to the gameplay. Additionally, even if it had really great gameplay, a four hour (or less) single player game would not warrant a purchase.

I guess there is multi-player for all the bunny hoppers out there, but if that is the main focus of the game, there has been an equally appathetic reporting of it.

/RIP
DB2 looks somewhat interesting, but I have many other games to play.
Guess I will wait for the $5.00 sale,

Creston, it is the USA. Of course nothing has been done...
Wait - unless you meant using taxpayer money to protect them.
The entire mortgage industry is having issues, though BoA is certainly leading the charge. Falsely signed mortgage documents? Check. Falsely signed foreclosure documents? Check. Low/no cost deals for members of government? Check. Foreclosing on homes that were not behind? Check. Foreclosing on homes that were not associates with BoA? Check.

Currently, one of the best ways to stall any foreclosure proceedings on your house is to demand the original documents of ownership and sale...

News Comments > BioWare on Dragon Age II DRM
23. Re: BioWare on Dragon Age 2 DRM Mar 12, 2011, 07:31 Ray Marden

I would argue it is a bit of everything.

First off, is this truly a sequel to DA, one that adds depth and richness to the story, world, and gameplay? Not really - it is a more action focused game with an expedited development proces.

Taken as a new game without the DA name, is this game utter trash? Not at all - it is a blending of RPG and hack and slash focusing on some of the best points from each genre.

Is this the sequel that honors DA? Not reallh - you know how the first game was actually a bit light on depth, but you know all that focus we spent on having your create your character in this new world? Gone. You know the tactical combat focus? Scaled back. The size of the areas? Scaled down to a corridor. Party AI? Still broken. Art/world? Recycled. Did you expand the world now that we're past the origin bit? We pulled a Witcher and dumped you in one city. Dialogue? Scroll wheel!

Looking at the reviews, is this one of the greatest games ever developed? Absolutely not; it's probably an 8/10 when viewed as a new type of game and it should be rated lower when judged as a DA sequel. You'll see the hardcore/elitist people just bash this game in rather silly, obvious ways. In contrast, you'll see the PR effect on some of the popular sites - these are reviews that take one fight and tell you an exaggerated play by play without ever actually critiquing the game or sites that don't give you much of an impression, even mentioning a few faults/inconsistencies/scaled back items, but then immediately reversing course in the final summary by telling you this is the greatest game ever!
It's the lack of any substance contrasted with the statement of greatness.
Waiting on the $20 price tag or the GotY edition,
Ray
