News Comments > Portal 2 Countdown Explained
48. Re: Portal 2 Countdown Explained Apr 16, 2011, 18:33 Ray Marden

I would imagine that only new purchases count towards the potato-themed auxiliary power, but the current CPUs is some combination of unique launches and length of play.

This way they can market the potato sack while encouraging playing of game by both old and new purchases alike. That would tend to make sense since these games have been updated/tweaked in various ways as part of the lead up to Portal 2.

Otherwise, I would guess-timate that the needed totals vary from game to game based upon prior sales numbers. Regardless of the reason, it is obviously that X number of current CPUs varies from one game to another, at least as a matter of percentage of completion.

Meanwhile, with regards to unlocking the game early, it looks like this would not happen prior to Sunday night, if not more likely sometime on Monday. I am hoping they will reduce the requirements, else it is not much of an early unlocking and misses the big, open period of the weekend.
Even more of a letdown since the countdown was to a countdown.
Not sure what I would have done Friday night...but just waiting on Amazon now,
Ray

12. Re: Deus Ex: Human Revolution Trailer Apr 16, 2011, 13:50 Ray Marden

Are you talking about the game or the commercial created by the advertising department? What was I talking about?

As a commercial, it has great technical merit and absolutely serves its purpose of creating a pleasant world.

For the game, it tells me nothing about it, is not an accurate representation, and is derivitave of many other things.

I'm not bashing the commercial as a stand alone item or even people that appreciate its technical points. As a gamer, it gave me zero information and is unrelated to the game. Obviously, the argument is that this is fleshing out the world, but I would point out that it contrasts quite a bit with what we've seen of the *actual* game.
Are we on an advertisement site or a gaming site? I am making a distinction.
Completely wrong if the game is like the advertisement and not the screenshots/movies,
Ray

I'll look at the game again if reviews are stellar, but I don't really have a major desire to play this game.

Akin to the second game, I am sure it will be an adequate shooter, but this one looks even more generic and neither of the sequels have drawn me in like the first game did.

If the reviews are otherwise okay, I'll consider this when it hits $20.00.
P2 in April, TW2 in May, and m*th*r f*ck*ng DNF in June!
Suspecting DS3 and Alice will underwhelm as well,

It is just an unoriginal commercial that has nothing to do with the actual game itself.
And is therefore a waste of resources from a gameplay perspective.
They may as well make this a giant "BUY NOW" animated .GIF and it would still mean as much to me.

Hating that this stuff actually influences people,

I am sure a number of places will be discounting it. Best Buy will be selling the console versions for $44.99 and the PC version for $34.99.

I don't know if it is still active, but Best Buy was also offering an additional $10.00 Reward Zong certificate for pre-ordering.
Mmm....Portal 2.

My wife wanted to check out the Lamestop sale this past weekend and I found it amusing that the local store now dedicates more space to used games than new games.
Would you like a warranty? Do you have an Edge card? Want to preorder something?
Not going to get started on the PC selection,

So...we only get the game that is ready, complete, and pre-ordered now if we give the publisher even more money?
EA, is that you?
Else they'll dangle it over our heads for a few more days?

Gee, where do I sign up for that amazing deal...

Joking aside, it doesn't seem like the nicest thing for all the non-PC, non-steam purchasers. Even worse, I don't really care about the "sack" collection of games. I already purchased the ones I am interested in and I am even less interested in the non-interesting ones when dangled over my head.

Just going to wait until Tuesday,
Ray

It currently has a $10.00 promotional credit in addition to the "ultimate swordman suit." At least it does according to the credit list:

http://www.amazon.com/b/ref=vg_nav_hp_10bonus?ie=UTF8&node=2244366011&pf

Though I will get screwed by a Friday release, that is where I am getting Portal 2 from. It's 10% off, free release day delivery to my work (via Amazon Prime,) I am using my $10 credit from Crysis 2, and then I'll get another $20 game credit after it ships...
Go go Amazon!

Honestly, GoG still irritates me a bit - they don't have games I want, they can end up charging more than I can find a game elsewhere, and then there was their relaunch fiasco...

I am going to be buying TW2, ut this whole "We won't have DRM, but we'll absolutley ensure every other version has it" rubs me the wrong way as well. If you're anti-DRM, be anti-DRM. Otherwise, they are just dicks that are playing a marketing game and otherwise screwing over people that have to buy the physical version for some reason and/or the people that buy the collector's edition.

Personally, I am balancing buying it from Amazon against buying it from GoG. GoG gives me some other junk, but Amazon will end up being cheaper due to the game credit that comes with it, to say nothing of the game credit I already have. If anybody other than GoG offered the same deal, I would preorder from them immediately.
I just have no faith in GoG.
Shrugging,
Ray

32. Re: BioWare on Mass Effect MMO Possibilities Apr 11, 2011, 17:36 Ray Marden

Can you just imagine?

Dynamic...player driven...twenty-four hour...realtime...PLANNET SCANNING?????
That would be so win in so many wrong ways.
BioWare needs to figure out its first MMOG before it tries anyhing else. Additionally, the ME world would need to have a fleshed out story and enhanced gameplay, but thosre are nothing things BioWare has been putting its focus on.

Noting that it would not be competitive as a shooeter either,

News Comments > Saturday Metaverse
4. Re: Saturday Metaverse Apr 10, 2011, 00:38 Ray Marden

DS9 is easily the best of all the series when compared side to side without any other handicaps applied. All the other series followed a similar format whereas this was confined to a station that was the point of conflict between a handful of specific races and a port for any/all races they could dig up.
And it had Hawk!
Oherwise, ToS started it all; TNG was extremely consistent, built up the fanbase, and set the bar; Voyager was a weekly "ZOMG we're going to get home this time...oh crap, maybe not" romp that really went nowhere, and Enterprise...I think it meant well, but had all sorts of problems and limitations.

Personally, I think Enterprise was doomed from the start - limited funding, waning interest in the world, scaled back stories, a modern day pre-quel, it went with time travel yet again, etc. Maybe if it was presented in a different way I could care more, but the whole "end of humanity" idea never seemed interesting. I found the roundtable of bad guys to generally be quite laughable.

As for Voyager, I was interested to see what they would do with the world after Janeway's time hopping at the end of Voyager, but that will never happen now since we'll go through at least a decade of alternate retellings what we've already previously seen...

A sad, pathetic nerd,
Ray

News Comments > RAGE Trailer
11. Re: RAGE Trailer Apr 10, 2011, 00:18 Ray Marden

For id, Rage is looking to be one of its best games in the last decade. It is only when I look at the game itself that, other than graphics, I am not sure what I would tell somebody what the great part of the game is. Maybe it will be the ultimate combination of various ideas, but my mind automatically defaults to explaining how it is an updated version of all sorts of other games...

As for Quake, I absolutely loved, loved, loved it as a SP game. I concede that Q2 had more features checked off, but it was yet another generic space marine setting and I think it lacked the creativity of the first game.

I suspect it was just a case of the technology limiting them coupled with 3D being a new thing, but I love the physical interaction with the world, the more angular architecture, focusing on vertical gameplay/mechanics, the mixing of fantasy with technology, a stronger soundtrack, much more varied settings from act to act, etc.
And yeah, being "first" probably helps quite a bit as well.
Still wishing somebody would make a sequel to Quake ,
Ray

Well, the game certainly has guns and a lot of repetitive shooting of identical mutants...
But does it have anything else?

News Comments > Bulletstorm Demo
16. Re: Bulletstorm Demo Apr 4, 2011, 18:13 Ray Marden

Eh, maybe when EA does another 50% sale, but it didn't seem particularly special.

Generic story, generic characters, a language system based around cussing, straight forward gameplay, useless teammates, gameplay that is broken when played like a typical shooter, gameplay based around cool/funny/hyped moments without any other component, etc. Hopefully this is just a demo aspect, but I felt really confined by being pressed into the ground (with the magical ability to leap over environment rubbles) coupled with a spontaneous speed boost in fairly small, linear areas. The framerate was high, but otherwise underwhelming from what I saw. I know I'll to go hell for this, but I vastly prefer the graphics of Crysis 2.

I can understand the niche appeal this title has, but I'm certainly looking for something quite different. I definitely love stealth-based or tactical shooters, but I still enjoy kicking ass. You know, when I am causing massive destruction in place of literally shoving my foot through your anus.

Lastly, I ran into a glitch which stopped me rather drastically. At one point, I want into a group of the guys that explode and I was moved (knocked?) into the air...and left there. It was like the game was still holding me to the flat plane of movement, but at a height that was different than the game world itself.

This could certainly be a game to play co-op with younger friends or something for fifteen minutes of mindless shooting, but not until it hits a $20-$30 price range. I had an idea of what this game was in advance, but I really though I would find some extremely fast, exhilirating gameplay. Instead, there are some building blocks here, but it is all about what "coolness" you bring to the game.
For what I was expecting, this was a real letdown.
Shrugging,
Ray

The Volition videos are an interesting watch.

From my perspective, I really loved what their old games did (Descent and Freespace,) but I absolutely hate the games they've been pushing out in recent years. Ignoring the fact that they just release the two same damn games over and over and over and over and over, I just haven't felt any draw to either SR (urban trash GTA clone) or RF (the first focused on the destruction aspect over everything else and the sequels just read like generic shooters.)
Too bad the market won't support Descent or Freespace.
I don't see myself playing SR any time soon, but I will try RF next time one of the games goes on sale for $5-$10...

Waiting for Portal 2 in the meantime ,
Ray

18. Re: The Witcher 2 Specs Mar 27, 2011, 22:21 Ray Marden

Well, this all comes down to shades of gray. Those are only recommended specs and not the minimum...this is a game that is focusing heavily on its graphics...the Core 2 Duos are neck and neck in gaming performance with the initial quad core CPUs...to say nothing of all the other "equivalent" CPU/GPU combinations...

Hoping this game is more than just a prettier single city,
Ray If nothing else, it will be better than DA2.

None of it particularly seems demanding. They're making a clear distinction between what the minimum system will be and what they recommend.

A quad core CPU (or equivalent AMD) and a 4850 are basically two year old (plus) technology...

Having enjoyed Crysis 2 immensely,
Ray Now I'm stuck waiting for Portal 2.
